Watching our favourite stars get married is one of our favourite pastimes here at Hitched HQ - from spotting the latest celebrity wedding trends to swooning over the most iconic celebrity wedding dresses, we love every bit of them.

But not all famous couples enjoy sharing their most intimate moments with the world. In fact, the number of secret celebrity weddings and surprise nuptials is much higher than you'd think.

From tying the knot in a surprise courthouse ceremony to eloping for a destination wedding in Las Vegas, we've taken a look at the celebrities who got married in secret in some of the most hush-hush ceremonies ever.

Some of these celebrity couples decided to get married in secret just the two of them, while others managed to conduct a secret wedding with dozens of guests in attendance - seriously impressive if you ask us. And if dodging the paps wasn't skilled enough, a few of these celebrity couples managed to keep their secret weddings under wraps for up to a year after the fact!

Some of these couples hadn't even confirmed they were dating before tying the knot! Ready to dive into a world of celebrity weddings you never knew about? 

1. Ed Sheeran & Cherry Seaborn

After a on-off history dating back years, Ed Sheeran married his long-term girlfriend Cherry Seaborn in January 2019. Ed has always been private when it comes to his personal life, and his wedding was no exception. 

Fans only realised the couple had got married when he referred to Cherry as his 'wife' in his lyrics to Remember the Name. Speaking to Table Manners podcast, Ed detailed parts of the intimate ceremony, saying, "No one knew, no one came to it, we lit candles and we got married, then we went back and had a curry."

Sounds like the perfect date night to us - and very them. We're just looking forward to the release of more Ed Sheeran love songs about his marriage now. 

2. Beyoncé & Jay-Z

Beyoncé and Jay-Z have reportedly had not one, but two secret weddings. The first, in 2008 when the couple got married in Jay Z's TriBeCa apartment. And the second time, when they privately renewed their wedding vows a few years later, although details of this have never been officially released.

Their first wedding took place at Jay-Z's penthouse apartment along with just 40 guests and this year, the couple will celebrate 15 years of marriage.

3. Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth

Miley Cyrus married Liam Hemsworth in 2018 after years and years of will-they-won't-they. The couple wed in a secret ceremony at their Nashville home and teased the news to followers on social media with a picture of a cake in front of 'Mr & Mrs' balloons. 

The couple's relationship did eventually end in divorce, and the release of Flowers which really cemented the end of Miley and Liam. 

4. Daniel Craig & Rachel Weisz

James Bond actor Daniel Craig began dating actress Rachel when they co-starred in Dream House. Just one year later, the pair tied the knot in a secret wedding ceremony in New York. They had just four guests at the wedding and kept things very much on the down low. 

The couple are still together now and share one child together, a daughter named Ella who was born in 2018. 

5. Jonathan Van Ness & Mark Peacock

Queer Eye hair angel Jonathan Van Ness surprised fans by announcing he had secretly married his partner Mark Peacock in 2020. In a social media post reflecting on the last year, he wrote: "Thank you universe for allowing me to be here and thanks to everyone who has supported me. 2020 was a year unlike any other. I got to campaign and get more involved politically.

"I finished my tour in Australia and New Zealand for what I didn't know would be my last stand-up show for who knows how long. I got married to my best friend and have a loving partner to continue building my life with..."

The post came as a surprise to fans who can't even be sure how long JVN and Mark have been together. The couple never officially announced their relationship, but it's thought that they've been dating since 2019. 

6. Kourtney Kardashian & Travis Barker

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker's wedding happened legally in Portofino, Italy. But, prior to their legal ceremony, the couple had two weddings, one of which was a surprise ceremony in Las Vegas. 

Their secret, unofficial wedding ceremony took place at a Las Vegas chapel in April 2022, with Kourtney sharing the news to her 214 million followers. She said, "Once upon a time in a land far, far away (Las Vegas) at 2am, after an epic night and a little tequila, a queen and her handsome king ventured out to the only open chapel with an Elvis and got married (with no licence). Practice makes perfect."

7. Princess Beatrice & Edo Mapelli Mozzi

Though Princess Beatrice and Edo Mapelli Mozzi's wedding wasn't quite a secret, it was about as low-key as royal weddings get. The couple were due to marry in May 2020, but, like for many nearlyweds, the pandemic had other ideas and threw their big royal wedding plans right off.

Instead, the couple decided to tie the knot in a very intimate, socially distanced ceremony attended only by their immediate family, including the late Queen Elizabeth. The ceremony was kept as much on the down-low as royal weddings can be. 

8. Joe Jonas & Sophie Turner

Making the most of a night out and a good pair of outfits, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner decided to tie the knot after the Billboard Music Awards in 2019.

Following Joe's performance at the event, the couple the proceeded to A Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas for an elopement wedding that shocked their fans.

Though it was last minute, it wasn't short of entertainment with Diplo streaming it on Instagram Live, Joe's fellow Jonas brothers in attendance and even an Elvis impersonator to entertain everyone. 

9. Margot Robbie & Tom Ackerley

Actress and model Margot Robbie married her long-term partner Tom Ackerley in her home country of Australia. The couple had just 50 guests in attendance and too lots of extra measures to ensure the highest level of privacy. They paid to have plenty of security guards present and reportedly confiscated phones and cameras, having a fully unplugged wedding.

As rumours began to fly around, Margot later announced the news on Instagram, posting a picture of her stunning ring. 

10. Audrey Hepburn & Mel Ferrer

Actress and fashion icon Audrey Hepburn met her actor husband Mel Ferrer after the pair co-starred in Ondine on Broadway - the show which won her a tony Award. After leading the paps on a wild goose chase to mislead them, the pair tied the knot in a secret ceremony in Switzerland in 1954.

It was Audrey's first marriage, but Mel's fifth. The pair later divorced in 2968 after 14 years together. 

11. Ryan Reynolds & Blake Lively

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have been together for what feels like forever now, and fans (including us!) love watching their banterful relationship play out, but there's still very little actually known about their 2012 South Carolina wedding. 

However, we've heard rumours of a Marchesa wedding dress, a superstar performer (Florence and the Machine) and Martha Stewart and her team working their wedding planning magic...

12. Cardi B & Offset

Cardi B wore the casual wedding outfit of all casual wedding outfits when she married rapper Offset wearing a trendy white tracksuit with gold stripes down the side. 

After tying the knot in a secret wedding ceremony on September 20th 2017, the couple kept their marriage a secret until Offset won an award at the BET Awards the following June and said: "I thank God, I thank my wife, you should thank yours," during his acceptance speech. 

13. RuPaul Charles & Georges LeBar

Though RuPaul has always been against the idea of marriage and conforming to be like 'everybody else', he did make things official with his long-term partner Georges LeBar in a 2017 secret ceremony. 

The couple met on the dancefloor at Limelight in New York in 1994 and have been together ever since. Speaking to The Guardian about their unique relationship formula, Ru said, "If he needs to do something else somewhere else, I'm fine with that. He and I know that on this planet where there are millions and millions of people, the person I have found on this planet that I like the very most is him. And I know that for him, the person he loves the most on this planet is me. I know that, there's no doubt in my mind."

Though their marriage six years ago was very much done for legal reasons, it's their almost 30 year-long relationship that's the real achievement.

14. Jennifer Aniston & Justin Theroux

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux decided to do things their way, away from the media circus that seemed to surround them at the time, and get married in a top-secret wedding held in their own garden.

The couple married at their home in 2015 and neither ever revealed much about the ceremony. All we know is that there were around 70 guests in attendance and that the incredible singer Sia provided the wedding entertainment

The couple parted ways three years later in 2018 with Justin calling their split 'heart-breaking'.

15. Marilyn Monroe & Joe DiMaggio

Marilyn Monroe was, and still is, considered a household name across the globe, and it's her marriage to baseball player Joe DiMaggio that sees her make this list. The couple planned to wed in a secret civil ceremony in San Francisco, and almost got away with it, too.

But, paps being paps caught wind of the secret wedding and got to the courthouse just in time to snap a picture of the newlyweds leaving their ceremony. While Marilyn and Joe's marriage lasted just a year, he continued to support her through her mental health and addiction struggles and, for twenty years after her death, he had red roses regularly delivered to her crypt.

16. Emily Ratajkowski & Sebastian Bear-McClard

We've all seen many a social media engagement announcement, but social media wedding announcements are far less common. However, that's how model Emily Ratajkowski announced her marriage to film producer Sebastian Bear-McClard.

In 2018, Emily posted an Instagram story with the caption, "Soooo, I have a surprise. I got married today."

The couple later welcomed their first child together in March 2021, calling him Sylvester Apollo Bear, before parting ways some time after. 

17. Cameron Diaz & Benji Madden

After a super quick engagement, Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden got married in a secret and private ceremony which took place at Cameron's Beverly Hills house in 2015. The couple have recently celebrated seven years of marriage and have a child together, but there was a mishap at the ceremony.

Benji's nephew, Sparrow, was the ring bearer and, as he walked up the aisle, he dropped one of the wedding rings on the ground. Benji and his brother and best man Joel spent the next few minutes on their hands and knees looking for the ring while the guests broke out into full hysterics. How funny! 

18. Heidi Klum & Tom Kaulitz

Supermodel Heidi Klum married her musician husband Tom Kaulitz just two months after their engagement announcement went live on Christmas Eve 2018. The couple obtained a confidential marriage certificate in California in February of 2019, but the marriage wasn't made public until June that year.

The attraction was there from the start for Heidi, who told Ellen DeGeneres, "It was to the point when I couldn't even look at him. You know when you're so attracted to someone so badly you're like, 'Oh my gosh, I can't even look at him.'"

What's more, now she's married, the Queen of Halloween has gone from solo outfits to now delivering us the most iconic couple Halloween costumes we never knew were possible! 

19. Mila Kunis & Ashton Kutcher

The ultimate level of secrecy in weddings comes from Hollywood power couple Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher. To this day, we know little to nothing about their 2015 wedding, nor have pictures or many details ever been released. 

In fact, fans didn't even know the couple had tied the knot until Mila wore a wedding ring during an appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden months after. The couple are still happily married and have two children, Wyatt and Dimitri who they welcomed in 2014 and 2016 respectively.

20. Amy Schumer & Chris Fisher

Amy Schumer and her chef husband Chris Fischer had a surprise secret wedding that even their guests were shocked about! The couple had only been dating for a couple of months before they sent out text messages inviting a small group of people to their secret wedding ceremony. 

Comedian John Early conducted their ceremony as their wedding celebrant and they embraced the whole dogs at weddings trend with Amy's pup Tati wearing a veil and walking down the aisle, too. 

21. Penelope Cruz & Javier Bardem

Penelope Cruz married Javier Bardem in a very quiet and small wedding ceremony in the Bahamas. Their wedding was held in a friend's garden and only very close family and friends were invited. 

Since their 2010 wedding, Penelope and Javier have gone on to have two children, Luna, 9 and Leo, 11. Continuing the theme of secrecy, Penelope and Javier keep their relationship and family life pretty private.
