We couldn't have wished for a better location for our wedding than Battle Abbey School. It has a wonderful sense of history and learning and an atmosphere where the past and the future come together. We got married in the centuries-old Abbot's Hall overlooked by a monumental painting of the Battle of Hastings, then had drinks and ice creams overlooking the battlefield followed by dinner in the wood-panelled school library and dancing back in the hall, with cheese and cake available in a separate bar area. It was very convenient to have everything in one overall location but also interesting for the guests to move through the various beautiful settings, with so much to discover along the way. We booked the venue just over six months before the wedding, so had a relatively short lead-in time, but we never felt under any pressure to make decisions or meet tight deadlines. Instead the organisers calmed our nerves, put us at our ease and worked to accommodate all our requirements. Debbie Grant, the event manager, was so lovely to deal with - professional and efficient but also warm and friendly throughout. And all the staff were brilliant, right down to the students who helped serve the meal, which wasn't straightforward given the number of guests we packed in! All the food was delicious too, from the canapés to the mountain of cheese in the evening. We were so impressed to come back the next morning and find everything pristine, all our things packed up ready to collect and the rooms all set for the event due to take place that day. They all worked so hard to make it work - a very tight ship! Overall we thought the venue was good value. Inevitably it ended up being quite expensive given we had over 150 people, but we found ways to save money, like supplying our own wine and making our own cakes, and reducing the options for the main meal (which also saved us having to chase everyone for menu choices). The cost of the venue hire was significantly cheaper than a lot of less attractive, characterful places. It's not easy to find somewhere to accommodate 150 people for the ceremony and the meal as well as the party, but we didn't feel like we had to compromise on anything with Battle Abbey - we wouldn't have picked anywhere else. We were grateful to English Heritage as well, who made us feel so welcome and, in return for a donation, supplied some fantastic volunteers to give talks for the guests about the history of the place and provided weapons and helmets etc for a bit of dressing-up. It was a truly unforgettable day - thank you to Debbie and all the team for making it so special.

Choosing The Pilgrim’s Rest for our wedding was one of the easiest and best decisions we made. We knew early on what we didn’t want: a venue that felt ostentatious or impersonal. What we were looking for was somewhere with real history and character, striking but still cosy, a space that would feel full and intimate without hosting a huge wedding. On a cold January day, we visited The Pilgrim’s Rest and immediately knew we had found it. The atmosphere was inviting rather than formal, and there was something special about celebrating in a building where people have been gathering and marking milestones for hundreds of years. Battle itself added so much to the experience. It’s a fun, quirky little town, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Abbey ruins. Being able to have all our guests stay nearby, just a stone’s throw from the venue, made the weekend feel relaxed and enjoyable. It also made getting ready on the morning of the wedding one of our favourite parts of the day, as we could wander over casually, take our time, and soak in the atmosphere, which set the perfect tone for everything that followed. Waverley and Amy were fantastic throughout, answering our many questions with care, nothing ever felt like too much trouble. Their recommended list of local suppliers was invaluable and made the daunting process of wedding planning much easier to manage. What we loved most was how flexible the venue was. As a dry-hire space, we could choose our own suppliers and really put our stamp on the day, making it unique and entirely personal. It felt completely right for us and reflected exactly the kind of celebration and atmosphere we wanted. We are so grateful we chose The Pilgrim’s Rest and would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a venue with genuine character and history. We chose it not just for the day itself, but because it’s a place we can return to in the future to remember the day and revisit those memories. While tidying up the next morning, we met a couple who had been married there years before who had returned to do just that; we feel privileged to be part of her history.

The night before the wedding I stayed in the family suite it was spotless and the beds were so comfy. My family stayed in the other rooms and they thought the same. On the morning of the wedding. We were brought pastries, jam, and fresh fruit juice, which was lovely. The hotel looked absolutely stunning. We chose the sit down barbeque for our wedding breakfast, and everyone said to me how great the food was, in the evening we had freshly made pizzas and buffet which was also so tasty. All of the staff were very attentive and an absolute credit to the Claverton, the only complaint I have was the day went so quickly, Thank you to everyone at The Claverton for making such an important day so perfect.
