We couldn't have wished for a better location for our wedding than Battle Abbey School. It has a wonderful sense of history and learning and an atmosphere where the past and the future come together. We got married in the centuries-old Abbot's Hall overlooked by a monumental painting of the Battle of Hastings, then had drinks and ice creams overlooking the battlefield followed by dinner in the wood-panelled school library and dancing back in the hall, with cheese and cake available in a separate bar area. It was very convenient to have everything in one overall location but also interesting for the guests to move through the various beautiful settings, with so much to discover along the way. We booked the venue just over six months before the wedding, so had a relatively short lead-in time, but we never felt under any pressure to make decisions or meet tight deadlines. Instead the organisers calmed our nerves, put us at our ease and worked to accommodate all our requirements. Debbie Grant, the event manager, was so lovely to deal with - professional and efficient but also warm and friendly throughout. And all the staff were brilliant, right down to the students who helped serve the meal, which wasn't straightforward given the number of guests we packed in! All the food was delicious too, from the canapés to the mountain of cheese in the evening. We were so impressed to come back the next morning and find everything pristine, all our things packed up ready to collect and the rooms all set for the event due to take place that day. They all worked so hard to make it work - a very tight ship! Overall we thought the venue was good value. Inevitably it ended up being quite expensive given we had over 150 people, but we found ways to save money, like supplying our own wine and making our own cakes, and reducing the options for the main meal (which also saved us having to chase everyone for menu choices). The cost of the venue hire was significantly cheaper than a lot of less attractive, characterful places. It's not easy to find somewhere to accommodate 150 people for the ceremony and the meal as well as the party, but we didn't feel like we had to compromise on anything with Battle Abbey - we wouldn't have picked anywhere else. We were grateful to English Heritage as well, who made us feel so welcome and, in return for a donation, supplied some fantastic volunteers to give talks for the guests about the history of the place and provided weapons and helmets etc for a bit of dressing-up. It was a truly unforgettable day - thank you to Debbie and all the team for making it so special.

We hired the whole hotel for the Saturday and Sunday and the entire experience, start to finish was simply amazing. We were made to feel like VIP’s from the moment we arrived, no detail was overlooked and our guests were all made to feel very special. We knew we wanted to book Pilgrims Rest the moment we saw it. The history, the setting, the size, the location in Battle, it had everything we were looking for in a wedding venue. What we didn’t realise when we booked was that the team running it would turn out to be every bit as special as the building itself. Waverley and Amy are genuinely incredible. From the planning stages right through to the day itself, nothing was ever too much trouble. Waverley made the day run beautifully. Every question we threw at her in the lead up was answered patiently and thoughtfully, and she worked through the aisle timings with us in detail to make sure everything flowed exactly as we’d imagined. On the day itself it all ran like clockwork, which is a testament to the prep she’d put in beforehand. Amy made the evening run brilliantly, and went above and beyond by helping Charlotte with her dress at a moment when it really mattered. That kind of personal touch is something you simply can’t put a price on. Between them, they helped us bring our vision to life and gave us a day we’ll never forget. If you’re considering Pilgrims Rest, you’re not just booking a stunning venue. You’re booking a team who genuinely care about making your day everything you’ve dreamed of.
