We Reveal the Most (and Least!) Popular Wedding Dates in the UK

Using data from our users, we've uncovered the most (and least!) popular wedding dates in the UK - and this year there's a *very* interesting trend

When it comes to wedding planning, your wedding date is so personal to you, and there are so many determining factors behind how you choose it, but have you ever wondered how many other people are saying 'I do' on the same day as you? We've uncovered the most popular wedding dates and months in the UK.

Our data* covers the most (and least!) popular wedding dates in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024, and also looks at which months see the most weddings, and which host the least. Knowing which wedding dates are popular can help you to determine when to host your own, if you haven't already set a date, that is.

Whilst wedding season falls in the same bracket every year, May to September, the most popular wedding dates and months in the UK changes every year. Unsurprisingly, Saturdays are usually the most popular day of the week to get married, with Tuesdays often being the least, but it's the exact date and months people choose to get married that varies the most.

We don't want to ruin the surprise for you, but we can tell you that the most popular wedding date for the last few years has landed in a different month every time! What's more, the most popular wedding date often doesn't land in the most popular wedding month!

May, August and September have all held the crown for the most popular wedding date in the last three years, so let's see if that theme runs true for 2024 weddings, too. Data has never been so addictive - trust us, once you start crunching the numbers, you genuinely won't be able to stop.

The Most (and Least!) Popular Wedding Dates in the UK Revealed

Without spoiling the results completely, we can tell you that in 2022, all of the top five most popular wedding dates landed in either August or September, however 2023 couples didn't follow suit. None of the top five most popular wedding dates for 2023 were in either months, and 2024 wedding dates veer even further from the historically popular ones.

Read on to find out which dates are the most popular for weddings over the last three years - you might even see yours in the mix!

The Most Popular Wedding Dates of 2024

After analysing a total of 163,866 2024 wedding dates in our Hitched database, it's finally time to reveal the most popular wedding dates for this year. But a little pre-warning for you, we had to do a double take at the numbers as the top five dates were not what we were expecting, and differ quite significantly to the trends we have seen in previous years.

Historically, the majority of the most popular wedding dates fall on a Saturday, and despite Saturdays being the most popular day of the week to get married in 2024, accounting for a whopping 42% of all weddings this year, not one Saturday can be found in our top five!

What's more, each of our top five most popular wedding dates shares one very interesting commonality - can you spot the trend?

1. The Most Popular Wedding Date of 2024: Monday 23rd September!

For the first time since we began tracking the most popular UK wedding dates, the crown for the most popular date to get married has landed on a Monday! Monday 23rd September 2024 is officially the most popular wedding date for this year, with a staggering 4,539 weddings taking place.

We weren't surprised to see a September date taking first place, but the fact that it's a Monday, and it's more than three weeks into the final month of peak wedding season did come as a surprise.

On the whole, Mondays are the 5th most popular day of the week to get married, but it seems this particular Monday in September will welcome more weddings than any other day in the year.

2. Friday 23rd August

With just 58 fewer weddings, Friday 23rd August takes second place for the most popular wedding date in 2024. It's no surprise to see an August wedding date in the top five as, in terms of months, August is the most popular month overall to get married.

Fridays are the second most popular day of the week to get married in 2024, so this is much less of a surprise as first place.

3. Sunday 23rd June

Sundays are the fourth most popular day of the week to get married, and June is the second most popular wedding month in 2024, so it's no surprise to see Sunday 23rd June taking third place. There will be 3,636 weddings hosted on this Sunday in June.

Sundays are popular as they allow for a weekend wedding without the Saturday premium.

4. Thursday 23rd May

Thursdays are the third most popular day of the week to get married, and May hosted last year's most popular wedding date. At number four, we have Thursday 23rd May. This popular wedding date has a May bank holiday just a few days later, allowing wedding guests to recover from the celebrations with a three-day weekend, or a four if they book the Friday off as well.

This Thursday will see 3,282 couples tie the knot.

5. Tuesday 23rd July

We were surprised that the most popular wedding date of the year fell on a Monday, so having a Tuesday in the top five as well has really blown our minds. However, booking a weekday wedding can see you save thousands on your venue hire price, so we completely understand the logic.

The fifth most popular wedding date of 2024 is Tuesday 23rd July, which for most, will be the first Tuesday of the summer holidays, making it a great date for teachers and couples with children, so it's likely that the 3,249 couples who picked this date did it because of the school holiday timings. Or perhaps they just love Tuesdays in July!

Revealed: The 23rd is the Most Popular Wedding Date in 2024

Did you spot the pattern? Of course you did, it's impossible not to! For the first time in the history of us tracking wedding dates, every date in our top five is the 23rd of that particular month.

With data that feels so written in the stars, having just come out of 2023, we spoke with celebrity psychic and astrologer Inbaal Honigman to see what she thought about the unlikely numbers.

Though the pattern of 23 may come as a surprise to us, Inbaal thought the opposite, explaining, "The number 23's popularity around wedding dates should not come as a surprise. Astrologically, the 23rd of the month is always very close to the start of a new sign, and as such it is a time of fresh starts. New beginnings, for example weddings, fit very well at the beginning of a new sign."

She continues, "In numerology, the number 23 holds such promise, bringing a positive situation forward towards its best outcome. The number 2 represents duality, couples and true love, while the number 3 signifies an established maturity, a family, the birth of a baby, hard work and an improving bank balance. It is a number of growth and development.

"Couples who marry on the 23rd not only bless themselves with natural growth, as 2 naturally leads to 3 in the most obvious order of things, but they bless their union with the growth and development which come with making a commitment. Those couples will see their love and family grow and thrive.

"Together, 2 and 3 are the romantic dream of a relationship progressing in the right direction."

The Least Popular Wedding Dates in 2024

The festive period is always low in terms of wedding bookings. Thursday 26th December sees just 24 weddings, 33 couples have decided to tie the knot on Christmas Day, and 37 on Christmas Eve, however they aren't the least popular wedding dates.

Tuesday 3rd December and Monday 9th December see just 23 weddings each, while Tuesday 17th December takes the crown for the least popular wedding date in 2024, with just 22 bookings.

In terms of days of the week, Wednesday is the least popular day of the week to tie the knot in 2024, with just 6.2% of weddings taking place on a Wednesday - a stark contrast to the 42.3% which take place on Saturdays, and 16.5% which are hosted on Fridays.

Winter is the least popular season to host a wedding, with January being the overall least popular wedding month to get married, accounting for just 2% of all weddings this year. It's closely followed by December which accounts for 2.4% of weddings, and February which will host 3% of celebrations.

There were more than 131,000 weddings last year. But what were the most popular wedding dates and months in 2023? Without ruining the surprise, we can tell you that the month the most popular wedding date fell in, hadn't been in our top five for a few years, proving that wedding trends are definitely changing.

1. The Most Popular Wedding Date of 2023: Saturday 27th May!

Here we have our winner. Saturday 27th May took first place, hosting 2,907 weddings - that's more than 2% of all weddings in 2023 and 18% of all May 2023 nuptials.

In 2022 the most popular wedding date was one in August, 2021 saw a September date take top spot and in 2020 it was a day in June that hosted the highest number of weddings - so you can imagine our surprise when 27th of May topped the list last year!

Having said that, May is an absolutely gorgeous month to tie the knot. Spring is in full swing and summer is just around the corner, but there may be another reason why this day in May was so popular with 2023 couples.

Saturday 27th May fell on the second May bank holiday, giving most people in the UK an extra day to celebrate their nuptials, or nurse a two-day hangover from partying at weddings on the 27th.

2. Saturday 24th June

Saturday 24th June took second place for the highest number of weddings in 2023 with 2,634 couples who tied the knot. 14% of all June 2023 weddings took place on this date. 2023 was also the first time in the last three years that a June wedding date had made it into the top five!

3. Saturday 29th July

Saturdays in July are always popular amongst wedding couples as the sun is usually shining and late July falls within the summer holidays, making it much more convenient for anyone with children to navigate celebrating! 2,630 couples tied the knot on this Saturday, just four more than the previous date.

4. Saturday 22nd July

Also falling in the school summer holidays, Saturday 22nd July took 4th place in our list of the most popular wedding dates in 2023 with 2,488 couples saying 'I do'.

5. Saturday 15th July

Our fifth and final most popular wedding date gives Saturdays in July a hattrick! 2,484 couples got married on Saturday 15th July. Proving the popularity of Saturdays in July, a grand total of 37% of all July 2023 weddings took place across these three dates.

The list of most popular wedding dates is interesting to say the least. May topping the list is very much down to that one, individual date, as August, July and June came out on top as the three most popular wedding months for last year with almost 45% of all 2023 weddings held in these three months alone.

September was the fourth most popular wedding month, hosting 13% of all 2023 weddings, followed by May in fifth place which saw 12% of 2023 weddings being held.

The Least Popular Wedding Dates in 2023

In contrast to the most popular wedding dates, the five least popular wedding dates are held 21 or less nuptials. The least popular wedding date in 2023 was Boxing Day with just 17 couples tying the knot on Tuesday 26th December.

Next on the list was Wednesday 13th December which hosted 19 weddings, followed by Christmas Day, which fell on a Monday, and hosted just 20 weddings.

Matching Christmas Day's 20 weddings was Tuesday 21st November, followed by Tuesday 17th January which saw just 21 weddings.

These dates come as little surprise, seeing as January, December and February were the three least popular wedding months for 2023. In fact, the three most popular wedding dates for last year each held more weddings than the entire month of January did!

August and September prove to be the most popular wedding months overall with 25,431 couples planning to tie the knot in August 2022, and 20,500 in September 2022 - but which actual dates are the most popular?

Without revealing too much, we can confirm all of the dates in the top five are Saturdays, proving that this really is the most popular day of the week to wed. Struggling to find a Saturday in wedding season? Consider looking outside of this time for more options.

1. The Most Popular Wedding Date of 2022: 20th August

August has claimed the top spot for the most popular wedding date of 2022. In 2020 it was 20th June and 2021 saw 4th September take the top spot. This year 20th August is the most popular wedding date with 3,515 couples planning to say 'I do' on this *hopefully* sunny Saturday.

2. 3rd September

Saturday 3rd September is the second most popular wedding date of 2022 with 3,273 couples planning to tie the knot then. Of the many weddings set to be taking place in September, this popular date plays host to 16% of all weddings in September 2022.

3. 6th August

Another August date has unsurprisingly landed in the top 5 most popular wedding dates of 2022. Saturday 6th August saw 3,247 weddings take place which is 13% of all August weddings in 2022.

4. 10th September

Continuing the battle between September and August is Saturday 10th September. Coming in as the fourth most popular wedding date of 2022, this September Saturday will see 3,005 couples tie the knot.

5. 27th August

The final spot in the top 5 most popular wedding dates is Saturday 27th August which falls on the popular bank holiday weekend, meaning couples and their guests can celebrate for several days without having to take annual leave (depending on job type, of course). This August date counts for 12% of weddings that month and plays host to 2,932 weddings.

The Least Popular Wedding Dates in 2022

With only 17 weddings said to have taken place by Hitched couples, 18th January 2022 was the least popular wedding date. This was closely followed by 11th and 25th of January which saw just 19 weddings each. All three of these dates are Tuesdays in January - could this be the least popular day of the week for celebrations?

The Most Popular Wedding Dates of 2021

2021 was the year weddings somewhat re-launched, with restrictions beginning to lift and things starting to open (again!), we saw a huge shift in the most popular wedding dates. Read on to find out more...

1. The Most Popular Wedding Date of 2022: Saturday 4th September

In 2021, with couples unsure about what weddings would look like in the beginning half of the year, the majority of couples (2,269 of them) chose a date at the complete opposite end of the summer.

September is always popular as a wedding month, but this was the first year it's topped the list of popular wedding dates.

2. Saturday 21st August

August was actually the most popular month to get married overall in 2021 with 16,350 couples tying the knot.

And on which date did most of those weddings take place? The 21st of August, that much-loved third Saturday of the month. It's during the summer holidays so teachers and young guests are available to join you, plus there's a high chance of sunshine!

In 2020, the second most popular date would have been the 25th July, so you can see that couples were cautious about marrying earlier in the summer.

3. Saturday 7th August

As you may notice going down this list, Saturday is still the day every couple wants for their wedding. It's always worth looking at a weekday wedding, or a Sunday, if you're struggling to find a summer Saturday. Bonus: those days are often cheaper!

Many congratulations to the 2,054 couples who said 'I do' on the 7th August.

4. Saturday 31st July

This weekend coincides with the Summer bank holiday in Scotland and the Republic of Ireland and is ideal for extended celebrations. It's also the first weekend after state schools break up for summer and was therefore a perfect date for those with children or who work in schools.

In total, 2,036 Hitched couples took advantage of the summer weather on this day.

5. Saturday 24th July

July isn't about to fall out of favour any time soon. It's the second most popular month for nuptials, with 15,959 couples signed up on Hitched with a July wedding date.

Now you have all the information on which wedding dates are most, and least popular, it's time to start wedding planning and step one has to be planning a wedding budget you can stick to.
