Our Story

Located in the historical town of Kelvedon which was developed through the Saxon period, the Old Essex Barn is rich in history, dating back to 1464. Exploitation and settlement of East Anglia are generally thought to have increased in the early medieval period (post c 400 AD) and to have continued and intensified over the subsequent centuries such that in the early post-medieval period (16th and 17th centuries) the area was generating significant wealth for its landowners based on sheep and wool, the cloth industry and agriculture. This might provide a context for the construction of the Crabb’s Farm in the mid-15th century and the attached agricultural barn due to economic expansion, and its associated appendages of the later centuries. In the 18th century, Crabb’s Farm was known as Scrapes Farm. Over the years, the Farm has undergone careful restoration to preserve its authentic charm, making it a cherished landmark in the region. Today, the Barn stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the past, welcoming guests to create new memories within its storied walls.

Main Barn: With a capacity to accommodate up to 60 guests for an indoor seated wedding breakfast or 150 guests for a cocktail-style reception, the main barn provides a spacious yet intimate setting for your wedding festivities.

Outdoor Gardens: Exchange your vows amidst the beauty of nature in our meticulously landscaped outdoor gardens. Our charming gazebo provides a serene and intimate setting for exchanging vows, with lush gardens and scenic views serving as the backdrop. Courtyard: We are delighted to offer a stunning courtyard space that serves as the perfect setting for an unforgettable outdoor wedding dinner and reception. With the capacity to accommodate up to 120 guests for a seated wedding breakfast or 200 guests for a cocktail-style reception, our versatile courtyard space can be customized to suit your preferences and accommodate your guest list.

Bridal Dressing Room and Groom's Lounge: Prepare for your big day in style in our dedicated bridal dressing room and groom's lounge.
