Lancrigg is a glorious country house in Grasmere nestled in a location second to none. From the stunning backdrop of Helm Crag and Easedale you can enjoy a unique and secluded setting for the most romantic of weddings and celebrations. A private paradise, surrounded by woodland with a breathtaking vista that inspired Wordsworth himself.

Where History, Romance, and Legacy Meet

Lancrigg is more than a wedding venue—it’s a place where history and love intertwine. This Grade II listed country house, nestled on the edge of Grasmere, has long been a sanctuary for the great minds of poetry, literature and science. William Wordsworth discovered it for his dear friend Elizabeth Fletcher, and over the centuries, its tranquil beauty has inspired legendary guests such as Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin among many other notable figures.

With roots stretching back to the 1600s, Lancrigg has been shaped by remarkable residents, including Sir John Richardson, the famed Arctic explorer who sought solace here after his daring expeditions. Every stone, oak beam and breathtaking view holds a story—one of adventure, poetry, and deep connection.

Today, as a family-owned venue, Lancrigg continues its tradition of timeless romance. Here, your wedding becomes more than a celebration—it becomes part of a centuries-old legacy, where love stories are woven into history. Let us welcome you to write the next chapter of Lancrigg’s enduring tale.

This charming property can be your private paradise in the heart of the Lake District, just a stone's throw from Grasmere. From the historic characterful house to our restored Grade II listed Lakeland barn venue, this tranquil property can play host to the celebration you have always dreamt of. The modern vintage interior is timeless, while the extensive grounds provide countless opportunities for stunning wedding photos that you will cherish for years to come. The aspect of the house is conveniently placed to enjoy the most stunning sunsets as the backdrop to your precious day. We are also excited to introduce our exclusive new 'Speakeasy' Whisky & Gin bar to ensure the festivities are toasted in style.

Facilities and Capacity

Lancrigg exudes a timeless elegance and historic appeal. Dating back to the 1600s and having been added to over time, this unique and unusual space is full of character and charm, including a wonderful restored traditional slate barn. The venue is surrounded by 30 acres of woodland and open fields at the base of Helm Crag and overlooking Easedale to the fells beyond. The property is fully licenced to hold ceremonies, so you can exchange vows in the house or on the sweeping lawn. The historic dining room is ideal for smaller celebrations and can accommodate a wedding breakfast with up to 20 guests. Larger gatherings can be held in the restored and heated barn or for a festival wedding with the inclusion of tepees and sailcloth tents.

Services Offered

Every couple deserves something special on the wedding day, and Lancrigg provides precisely that. The team is dedicated to creating unique, relaxed and memorable occasions for clients. Regardless of the event style or size, they strive to help bring the celebration to life. With full facilities onsite providing the perfect area for professional caterers to provide incredible quality, locally produced food as well as our own in-house wrap around food options, the team can provide a list of trusted local suppliers if required. There is also accommodation onsite with 17 individually furnished bedrooms within the house and the barn. Perfect Autumnal Wedding

When we first got shown around the Lancrigg by Simon we knew the venue was special. The setting at the foot of helm crag is phenomenal and we knew that even in the worst weather the venue and surrounding fells would still look incredible. Simon and Alison were on hand from day 1 of booking right up to the big day itself to answer questions and provide advice.

The Venue itself is incredible, the rooms are all lovely, the barn is beautiful as well as the common areas of the main house. We used the lounge for the bridal party to get ready in and the lighting was perfect. The bridal suite- silverhowe, was also a stunning room with a lovely window overlooking the grasmere fells.
The Lancrigg gave us a perfect amount of independence to choose our suppliers, theme, venue dressing/decorations etc whilst still getting the support of an amazing team of staff as well as their own catering in the evening as well. We styled the barn with an autumnal theme which looked lovely. On the day the staff ensured that things were running smoothly and were always on hand to support us with anything we needed. I think the real testament to the Lancrigg is the feedback we got from our guests afterwards. Nearly everyone commented on how friendly and helpful the staff at the Lancrigg were. Everyone loved the mountain views and a lot of compliments were made about the pizza in the evening!

We loved being able to have our friends and family all staying on site in the beautiful rooms at the Lancrigg or at the handy airBnB next door which allowed us to accommodate all of our day guests. It made the whole weekend feel like a celebration!

The greatest day!

We knew the Lancrigg was our dream wedding venue when we were shown around by Simon. Simon is the most relaxed and calming person you will ever meet and that is what you need for a wedding. What drew us to the Lancrigg was the beautiful surroundings, the ability to have the whole place to offer as a place to stay for some of our guests and the option to get married inside or outside (dependent on the weather). Once we had chosen the venue, we had regular contact with Alison regarding timings and suppliers at our wedding. They do have recommended suppliers to help you to start your wedding planning. As a couple, we wanted a more personal wedding and to do most things ourselves and the Lancrigg are probably one of the fewer venues to allow you to personalise your day. The hotel rooms were beautiful, very clean and the cooked breakfast was a major hit alongside the buffet the night before. The pizzas that they cooked as our evening food were commented on as the best pizza people had ever tasted- even one of our friends said this after getting back from Italy! Simon allowed us to set up the venue ourselves and no ask was too much, he was on hand the whole time- even carrying a brolly to help me walk down the aisle without looking soaked. Despite being a wedding venue, we felt like we were the only people to ever get married there. It is not a one in one out type of venue. The staff make you feel like the most special couple and ensure that you have the most special wedding day. Thank you to Simon, Alison and the Lancrigg team for creating the most special day for us, our family and our friends. We cannot wait to visit again one day.

The perfect autumn wedding

The Lancrigg was the perfect wedding venue for us.
From start to finish the team were friendly, professional, and so helpful.
We first viewed the venue in October 2024 and loved the character of the property, the stunning views and location in the middle of the Grasmere fells.
We booked the venue for exclusive use which was perfect for our small wedding of 32 people.
On the weekend of the wedding the staff couldn't have been more helpful. The evening buffet on the Friday night, and the excellent cooked breakfasts on the Saturday and Sunday morning made things so easy for all of our guests.
On the day itself we were incredibly lucky with not a cloud in the sky. Again the staff were so helpful in setting up the outdoor ceremony area, helping us decide the final layout of the tables for the wedding breakfast.
Getting married under the beautiful tree overlooking the fells with our closest family and friends was such a special experience which we will treasure forever.
We were able to go for a walk with all of our guests to the new bridge, and then continue on up to Easedale waterfall. We love walking in the Lakes, and having all of this so close to the venue was amazing for us.
The Lancrigg team worked so well with all our suppliers, and having access to the whole house to celebrate and relax after the events of the day was so special.
On the Sunday we were able to take our guests up Helm Crag which was the perfect length of walk for the day after the wedding - what other wedding venue has a Wainwright next door to it!
Our wedding weekend at the Lancrigg was perfect and we wouldn't change a thing about it.
Thank you so much to all of the team for helping make it such a special weekend.

Lancrigg, What a Truly Special Venue!

It took us a long time to find the perfect place for our wedding, with our long list of needs, but then we discovered The Lancrigg. From the moment we stepped through the door and were greeted by Simon, we knew it was the right choice. The house itself is a beautiful country retreat nestled in the Lake District, and it immediately felt like home.
Simon and Alison were wonderfully flexible, ensuring all of our expectations were met and more. The on-site team were an absolute joy to work with; friendly, attentive, and full of energy. They created the perfect atmosphere and kept our guests celebrating late into the night.

The perfect wedding venue

The Lancrigg is truly a special place, the perfect wedding venue.

If you’re reading this because you’re thinking of booking it, don’t hesitate for a second. I’m not sure words can really do it justice, but I’ll try!

We feel so so lucky that this magical corner of the Lake District was ours for the weekend in July 2025. Every single member of the team was wonderful, kind, enthusiastic, and such a joy to plan with. They embraced all of our ideas, added their own thoughtful suggestions, and made sure everything came together perfectly.

The venue itself is breathtaking. It’s clearly a real labour of love which you can sense the moment you arrive. Even on our first visit, on a drizzly February day, we knew instantly it was the place for us. The accommodation is excellent, and the beautiful walk down into Grasmere is an added treat for guests.

We are also deeply grateful for how supportive and flexible the team were when we had to rearrange our wedding for health reasons. Their kindness meant the world to us, and it’s something we’ll never forget.

We can’t wait to return in the years ahead and watch The Lancrigg continue to flourish. It will always hold a very special place in our hearts.

Perfect wedding location

Everything at the Lancrigg was amazing. From the organisation during our planning process to the running on the actual day. We loved every moment. The staff on the weekend and via email were absolutely incredible and couldn't have been more helpful or excited for us. The views from the house are stunning and some of the best in the Lake District, it was amazing to wake up to that and have this as the backdrop to our outdoor ceremony.
We cannot recommend the Lancrigg enough

A quirky venue with scenic views ~ the PERFECT back drop to a colourful Lake District wedding with alpacas

It was love at first sight with Lancrigg after viewing the venue on a sunny day in March 2024. We knew it was the venue for us and immediately booked for the equivalent weekend in 2025… unable to stay away we went back a few days later with Luke's parents and brother in tow who were instantly wowed like we were. We were excited about everything the Lancrigg could offer us and we had a long list of requirements... A venue where we could get legally married and hold our reception without the need for transport - tick Preferably in a barn - tick Accommodation on-site for day guests (with additional accommodation nearby for everyone else) - tick Picturesque views - tick Grounds for us to realise another wedding dream of having alpacas for the drinks reception - tick Relaxed country house vibe - tick It is safe to say the Lancrigg ticked all of these boxes and more. Another key requirement for us was to be able to share our love of the Lake District with our family and friends. The Lancrigg was the perfect venue to showcase the natural beauty of the Lakes. The views from the front door!! The daffodils! The woods! One of Em’s favourite memories of the morning of the wedding was getting tagged in friends' stories when they were exploring the Easedale Valley and Grasmere village. The Lancrigg also ticked the box location wise. Conscious of guests travelling from across the UK and overseas, we wanted our wedding venue to be in the Central Lakes to provide good connectivity and minimise travel time around the Lake District. Lancrigg is so well connected that some guests opted to travel up from London by train to Oxenholme/Windermere stations and taxi the remainder of the journey. Saved them the M6 car park IYKYK. Multiple guests have praised the organisation of the wedding weekend and said that the day was so well organised that it felt seamless. Thank you to Simon, Lancrigg team and Emma (the wedding coordinator) for all their hard work and service with a smile. Lots of our guests commented on how friendly and attentive everyone was. No job was too big or too small. Simon was our knight in shining armour and came to the rescue with a car charger when our car broke down as we were trying to leave! The barn which has been lovingly restored by Simon was the perfect canvas for our day. As it was a March wedding ~ and you can’t guarantee the weather in the Lakes at the best of times ~ for the comfort of our guests aged 1-Octogenarian, we opted to hold our ceremony in the barn. The space was then transformed for our wedding breakfast and evening reception. We put our own personal spin on the barn by hiring mirror balls and waterfall fairy lights from Emma Jane Events and a stunning A-frame floral backdrop from Ash at In The Meadow Floral Design which enhanced the barn’s natural beauty. Despite the forecast in the week running up to the wedding showing rain for most of Saturday, we were blessed with sunshine until 6pm, so we were able to hold our drinks reception on the lawn overlooking the stunning vista. Even when the rain did arrive, that didn't stop our fun. In the evening, guests were sheltered from the rain by huge parasols in the newly extended courtyard area and that were also lots of umbrellas around for guests to use. We love the speakeasy Whiskey bar; one of our fondest memories of the day was taking Jura the alpaca (from Wreay Syke Alpacas) into the bar for a photo. Our guests also enjoyed the ‘pour your own bar’ in the courtyard; an easy/alternative way to put money behind the bar for guests. Despite our guests' best efforts to finish off the casks before leaving, there was still beer left over so Simon kindly lent us a pump when we collected the casks on the way home from our mini moon. One of the best decisions we made was to extend our exclusive estate hire package from 2 nights to 4 nights which gave us extra time to get ready as well as relax and unwind afterwards. Guests said “the calm and relaxing nature of the landscape was reflected in our experience of the Lancrigg”. Whilst the catering on the Saturday was provided by the fabulous Karen Rhodes team, we had fantastic wrap around catering provided by Lancrigg. On Friday night guests were treated to a Mexican buffet and on Sunday night we enjoyed handmade pizzas made fresh to order. The perfect food after an afternoon spent soaking up the scenery - a large group hiked up to Easedale Tarn and others had a more leisurely exploration of Grasmere village. Thank you Simon, Alison & team for making our Lake District wedding dreams come true. We were the first wedding of 2025 and the last wedding celebrated in the Poet’s Bar (now the even more fabulous Explorer’s Bar). The Lancrigg will always hold a special place in our hearts - with memories to last a lifetime. We look forward to visiting, again and again. Dr & Mrs Watkins

Stunning Venue

We had the most wonderful wedding at Lancrigg last weekend. It was the only venue we visited and even on a grey day in January we could tell it was going to be perfect for us. The exclusive use and rooms available meant our family could stay and make a full weekend out of it and the fell views were just the icing on the cake. The staff are super friendly and relaxed and the thought and craftsmanship that have gone into the barn, whiskey bar, house and grounds are really impressive. We were blessed with a lovely sunny weekend and took our guests for a swim in Easedale Tarn on the Sunday - this is a stunning Lake District venue surrounded by fells and now our forever happy place.

Unforgettable!

Our day at the Lancrigg was incredible. There is nowhere more beautiful than this hotel among the fells of the Lake District. The staff were so attentive for the whole weekend, not just the day. They went out of their way to make sure we, and our guests had an unforgettable day. And it really was. They allowed us to be creative with the grounds which meant we had a wedding that really reflected us as a couple. I can’t thank Simon, Alison and all the staff enough for such an amazing day!

A very special place to get married!

The Lancrigg is the most beautiful location, bursting with character and so many different spaces to create the wedding you want.

The newly built barn (built by the owner using oak from trees that fell in the storm!) is stunning and was a perfect spot for dinner and dancing. The whisky bar is an amazing nook that lots of our guests gathered in between dances or spilled out into the courtyard area between. We had several children at our wedding and the open areas, the lounge with toys in it and the playground were a huge hit! I cannot say enough of how beautiful this space is and how special it was getting married on the grass with the fells in the background.

But the thing that makes this place so special and everything a bride and groom could hope for, are the owners and the staff. I don't even know where to begin with how fantastic they are, our guests commented so many times about the team. They are so friendly, really care about making your day how you want it and go above and beyond a million times over. The food and drink were fantastic and our guests so well looked after. THANK YOU!

What's been created at the Lancrigg is very special, it is personal and relaxed and I wish we could do it all over again!

The Daykin’s

Wow
Still not down to earth fully after celebrating our wedding day at Lancrigg in August.
We had a clear vision of what we wanted to achieve after being together for 15 years!!
Upon finding this hidden gem of historic perfection & quirky charm we knew this was the venue for us.
Exclusivity was a huge bonus over three perfect days. We opted for an intimate 30 people gathering so we could spoil our guests with perfect wrap around food provided by the hotel & exceptional Wedding day Canapés & four course dinner courtesy of ‘The Cumbrian Chef’ Julian Ankers & his attentive team.
Our relationship with Katrina set off perfectly as soon as we met. Nothing was too much trouble & she just ‘got’ us. Which is very important when you are arranging something so very personal.
The whole team at Lancrigg were a pleasure throughout, with a special mention to Serene who worked so hard not only doing her job but temporarily becoming a new family member!
The only thing that wasn’t perfect was the Lake Land weather!!! But we can’t hold Lancrigg responsible for that!
It truly was the best time of our lives.

The perfect Lake District venue

The Lancrigg is the perfect Lake District venue, combining the comfort of the charming house and recently renovated barn, with stunning views of the Fells. The whole team are fantastic, from the grounds staff to the owners, who work together to make sure the venue is looking it's best and everything runs smoothly. A special shout out to Katrina, who is so calm and calming, and did so much to look after us and our guests for the whole weekend. Having sole use of the Lancrigg for two nights is also a wonderful advantage of this venue, and we were able to have just over half of our guests staying with us to extend the celebrations.

Our Beautiful Wedding

On April 27th this year my husband and I tied the knot and had our wedding weekend at The Lancrigg! It’s taken us so long to write this because every time we come to do so I start to cry at all the happiness, love and memories we have. From the word go it was just such a lovely experience from booking and choosing this wonderful venue to meetings with Katrina and then finally the special day.

From start to finish Simon, Alison, Katrina and all of the team were absolutely fantastic and really made you feel like anything was possible with our special day and it was…. This amazing team made everything happen, nothing was to big from making a new table the day before our wedding to ordering in specific beverages and helping with flower arranging spending hours and hours helping and just being a true family and team.

When we booked the venue Simon had newly renovated the barn by himself and had big plans for the grounds of The Lancrigg. We were skeptical about how many plans he had and whether it would be done within the 6 months we had to plan our big day!!!! Well we had no reason to be as everything and more was finished and ready. We had our own WhatsApp group with regular updates with the team.

They don’t have onsite catering for your big day however Karen Rhodes who they work very closely with were absolutely sensational we were the first wedding of the season and the first wedding at The Lancrigg for the caterers so you’d of thought maybe one little hiccup would occur but not one single one did!!!! Crème de la Créme both the venue and the caterer.

We were able to take over the whole place and make it unbelievable spectacular. The comments such as “how have you found this venue” “it’s absolutely stunning” “the views are spectacular” don’t do it justice from our guests.

So if you’re looking for a stunning venue with amazing people and with a team who are truly passionate, dedicated and committed to making your day yours then look no further!

A romantic, beautiful and unique venue in a stunning location

An utterly perfect venue for our wedding. We married under the beech tree with the fells in the background, played lawn games in the garden, dined and partied in the beautiful slate barn, and slept peacefully in the bridal suite. It has exactly the right mix of history, setting, and a laid-back home-from-home feel that we wanted. There are a lot of Lake District hotels churning out formulaic weddings but the Lancrigg brings something different. It's a venue that allows your wedding to be unique and personal. Additionally, you're made to feel like it's your home for the weekend, and nothing was too much trouble for the lovely staff and owners. An incredibly special place.
