Speech by JONATHAN HENDY

My speech in the form of a poem went down well. A poem gets to the point quickly and holds the audience's attention.  If you cho0se to present your speech in the form of a poem there may be a few verses you could borrow, but in the main this poem is personal to me, which is one of the most important aspects of it.   I found this site useful in reaearching ideas for a speech. The first verse for example seems to be a commonly used gag - but a good opener just the same, but most of the poem came from my own experience.  Good luck with your speech!  And all the best for your wedding, and marriage

Groom Speech Poem

Thank you very much Colin for your kind words…

I had prepared a speech
For this very special day
But now that I am married
Becky has told me what to say.

Maybe the day just got to me
Or it's a sign for the years ahead
But I'm afraid I wasn't listening
To a single word she said.

Becky

As Becky gives up her ‘Cartledge’ name
And becomes a new ‘Hendy’
Her name no longer reminds me of
That injury to my knee.

Becky you are simply stunning today.
I'm sure everyone will agree
And I can't express just how lucky I am
Just how happy you've made me.

I met Becky on a walk
And together we found our way
And embarked upon a journey
That has led us here today

I remember texting her a lot
And I ran out of things to send
So I wished her Happy Birthday (I thought)
For the following weekend.

“It's a bit early for my birthday
Triple question mark???
“Ok, I said, then come out with me
On a walk around Clumber Park”

So we walked through Clumber's Oaks
And on lots we did agree
And she laughed at all my jokes
If only out of sympathy.

Remember when I proposed
In that Taverna by the sea
I waited for a cat to move
Before I went down on one knee

And the waiter interrupted
He didn't see me on the floor
He just wanted to clear plates
And ask if we wanted more.

Brides parents & Andy & Jen

Thanks to Colin and Sue.
For welcoming me into their lives
And for shaping Becky into
The loveliest of wives.

They are so kind and generous
And they invite us round for tea
And they try their best to ‘entice’
Conversation out of me.

Welcome to in-laws Andy and Jen
Part of my new family extension
And to May who was wondering when
She would get a special mention.

My parents

Thanks to my parents
For all that you have done.
Guiding and supporting me
It's a pleasure to be your son.

I once had a supposed ‘funny’ role
In one of the school's Shakespeare plays
But the audience gave me no reaction
Just a kind of silent malaise.

The next night my parents came to watch
And I clearly made them proud
They were the only two in a hundred
That I heard laugh out loud.

However, I heard just recently
Parental support it was not
For they were laughing at my acting
And were not following the plot.

Bit more about Becky

Becky you must take the credit
For co-ordinating our big day
Creating and preparing
And for giving me a say.

The wedding is distinctive
For its splendid purple-ness
So much so, we invited Prince
But he never got back to us.

Aunty Pat and the cake

Thank you Aunty Pat for the cake
I urge you all to try it!
And you'll also be helping me
With my post wedding diet.

Paul – the photographer

A huge thanks to Paul
One of my oldest friends
For most of the day he's been hiding
Behind his camera lens

He organised the photo call
Lined us all up in a row
And captured the very moment when
My Dad stood on my toe!

(It was a bit of a squash in there…)

But enough of sore toes
For fine photos I'm sure they'll be
But don't superimpose
Leigh Halfpenny over me.

Bridesmaids

Resplendent in their purple
One of many accolades
For the two ‘Purple Hollies’
Our beautiful bridesmaids.

First ‘Holly Jazz Hands’ – (present gift)
Bridesmaid extraordinaire
And Bridesmaid Amazing
Or otherwise Holly Bear (present gift)

Ladies and gentlemen, raise your glasses to our bridesmaids  –  ‘The Purple Hollies’.

Best Man

Thanks to my best man Stuart
For organising my stag
Into the realm of Scotland
We flew Wales's Flag.  (metaphorically)

He helped drive 800 miles
With my friends Simon and Nick.
And I was squashed up in the back
Trying my best not to be sick.

He'll soon confuse fact with fantasy
With a bit of exaggeration
And he'll try to embarrass me
With his wild imagination

But I'll thank him now BEFORE the speech
As I might not feel like it AFTER
So thank you Stuart – and at my expense
Here's to lots of laughter…

And not forgetting David and Alys – the youngest members of the family.

Last verse – Guests

Thanks to all of our guests
Our lives you have enriched
For joining our celebration
On the day that we got hitched.
