Wedding music can completely transform the atmosphere of a day, and there are so many moments where a bit of music can make all the difference. Whether it's the wedding ceremony music, the playlist you get ready to, or the first dance song, music has that power.

Couples looking for the perfect LGBTQ wedding songs to set the tone on their day have come to the right place. Finding gay love songs which don't heavily reference gender stereotypes couples can be tricky, as so many songs are written from a cis-het relationship perspective.

To help you create a list of LGBTQ wedding songs, we've compiled a list you're guaranteed to love, with something for every type of wedding and theme. Super romantic and love the sweet stuff - we've got you covered. Prefer a funny-meets-sarcastic type of song to sum up your relationship - we've got that, too!

LGBTQ+ Wedding Songs: 50 Sweet Songs You & Your Partner Will Love

Most of the songs in this list are either written or recorded by LGBTQ+ artists. We've also included some classics that have been re-recorded from a queer couple's point-of-view (check out the album Universal Love if you want to hear more of these). The gender-neutral first dance songs use ‘you’ as the pronoun, so they can work for binary or non-binary couples.

If you’d prefer not to have lyrics at all, feel free to browse through the Vitamin String Quartet’s album The Gay Wedding Collection – it’s full of string covers of the likes of Your Song, At Last, and Like A Prayer, making it an ideal choice for background music during your drinks reception or wedding breakfast.

If you're also looking for some party-ready hits to add to your dance floor vibes, check out Spotify's Pride Mixes playlist to get some inspiration.

We’ve made you a full Spotify playlist at the end for you to listen to and feel the love, as well as some advice and favourite picks from some of our top wedding bands and musicians. Enjoy finding your perfect first dance song!

What better source for music advice than musicians themselves? We reached out to a couple of LGBTQ+ wedding musicians who have some super useful advice and suggestions to help you on your wedding planning journey.

Below, we have some answers from The Fireflies Party Band manager and singer Ian, and singer-songwriter Thomas William Melling. The Fireflies Party Band have been performing for a couple's big day for nearly a decade, while singer-songwriter Thomas William Melling has been performing for 17 years, since age 14. You can trust us when we say they know what they're doing.

What Are Your Favourite LGBTQ+ First Dance Songs?

For Thomas, it depends. He says, "Everybody's taste in music varies. I sing such a diverse mix of songs, each tailored to each couple. It would be hard to narrow it done as everyone has ‘their’ own song. But as an LGBTQ+ singer, I would have to say Still the One by Shania Twain - who doesn't love that song?"

Ian, manager of The Fireflies Party Band, agrees that there's a huge selection to choose from, but he loves something with a personal touch. "There are so many - I have to say a song I personally wrote and recorded as an artist has been used several times by both LGBTQ+ and mixed gender-identifying couples. It has universal, non-gender-specific lyrics.

"It’s the ultimate honour when people ask afterwards about who it’s by or try and Shazam it when it’s the original track being streamed! It’s called Complete by MARKX."

What Advice Would You Give to Couples Looking for LGBTQ+ Wedding Songs?

Thomas encourages couples to follow what makes them happy, explaining: "I would say you can have any song you like - it's your special day, and we don't have to follow traditional ideas of songs if you don’t want. Choose a song that means something to you both, and we’re more than happy to change the words or pronouns to suit."

Ian is on the same page, and loves songs that have a deeper, more personal meaning for the couple - "I think it’s beautiful when couples choose a non-mainstream song or even a slowed-down version of a classic uptempo song where the meaning and feel changes.

"A song that has meaning for them personally is much better than a song that people know well as there is the element of surprise and individuality. Non-gender-specific lyrics in songs give a more inclusive feel - especially ones that lyrically acknowledge in some way the struggles, difficulties or obstacles they may face from judgement by society."

With that advice in mind, feel empowered to choose a first dance song that embraces all that your love story and relationship is.
