1. Moon Spot Print Midi Dress - £199, Whistles

Model wearing a pink sleeveless polka dot dress with white heels

For a retro wedding guest dress look with a modern touch, look to this style from Whistles. The polka dots are really fun, especially when combined with the vivid raspberry pink. It's made from light, layered material on the bodice which leads to a pretty fishtail style skirt. If you're attending a vintage wedding, it would fit in perfectly.

Sizing: 4-20

Pros & Cons: This pattern is very statement making but you could break the colour and print up by popping a block coloured blazer or jacket on. A neutral tone such as beige or cream will match wonderfully.

3. Floral Print Long Sleeve Smock Dress - £56, SilkFred

Model wearing a blue floral short smock dress

Floral dresses for a wedding are a lovely choice - Deputy Editor of Hitched, Rima Barakeh, tried this style out and said that it was a total dream for so many reasons.

"Firstly, I love a shirred moment - it's such a flattering material when used at the top of a dress, and really works with this kind of chiffon-esque fabric. The V-neckline isn't too low, which works for me as I'm fairly small-busted and often dresses are far too low to wear without some form of adjustment.

"Having said that, the shirring is so stretchy and comfortable, it'd fit most sizes! I usually wear size 10-12 in dresses and I ordered this in a 10. It fit me like a glove, but I could have easily sized down as the fabric is really stretchy. The skirt is beautifully flowy and comfortable - totally bloat-friendly and could even make a fab maternity wedding guest dress as there's plenty of swish room."

Sizing: 8-16

Pros & Cons: It has long sleeves that'll keep you warm, but as they are made from a sheer material, they are lightweight and breathable.

Zoe Burke, Editor of Hitched tried it out for style and said, "I loved the design and the pattern of this dress - it can be dressed up for a wedding, but you can also dress it down for other occasions so you can get maximum wear out of it.
“I was unsure what size to order so I went for a 10, as I tend to wear an 8 or a 10 in most clothes. It’s the perfect pick for wedding guests who don’t want to be overly dressy but still want to feel like they’ve dressed up!”

How to Dress for a Wedding as a Guest?

When choosing the right wedding guest outfit we have a few tips to from Megan Watkins, Head Stylist at SilkFred, to help:

  • White is a total no-no. Doesn’t that go without saying?
  • "Pick something you will wear again and again," Megan says.
  • Don’t upstage the couple. By all means, be experimental, but don’t go too OTT.
  • Don’t wear anything too skimpy. The couple’s grandparents may be there, remember.
  • Be bright and colourful in the summer! The photographs will look all the better for it. "Go for a bold colour like sunshine yellow or ruby red," suggests Megan.
  • Don’t be too casual. You’ve got to make an effort. Megan explains that you shouldn't be afraid to add flair to your outfit, "whether that be through accessories or embellishments."
  • Take a pair of flats! Who can really dance all night in heels?
