Sizing: UK4 - UK14

Pros & Cons: This luxurious wedding guest dress runs true to size but there is no stretch on the fabric so you’ll want to ensure you get the correct size for you. The quality is impeccable, as with all Self Portrait gowns, but they are dry clean only.

8. Blue Blazer Style Coat Wedding Guest Dress - £80, River Island

Blue blazer dress from River Island

Not all coat dresses for weddings need to be midi length. This short blazer dress from River Island is ideal for those who want the feel of a jacket or coat dress without the long length of one. The bold blue colour is striking and can be dressed with striking pink shades like the model is wearing, or plain black or nude accessories if you don’t want to go as big.

Sizing: UK6 - UK18

Pros & Cons: The belt around the waist is adjustable so you can wear it as tight or loose as you like. Short wedding guest dresses aren’t for everyone, but remember fashion models tend to be on the taller side so if you’re a shorter wedding guest, this dress will probably sit just above the knee.

Bennett because of it’s classic silhouette and timeless herringbone pattern - it instantly elevates this jacket and makes it a great choice for wedding guests. The buckled belt is smarter than regular tie ones so if you’re looking for a coat for a formal wedding occasion, this is a great contender.

To answer your pressing style questions around coats for weddings, what's appropriate and which styles suit which seasons, we've enlisted the expert advice from Annabel Louise, head of product for Coast Fashion

Can You Wear a Coat for a Wedding?

You might wonder if you can wear a coat to a wedding - after all, it's all about getting dressed up in a lovely wedding guest outfit! But at the risk of sounding like your mother, you don't want to catch your death.

Annabel agrees, "Coats and jackets can be a great addition to a wedding look, especially at winter weddings. If a coat feels too heavy, blazers or even boleros are a great alternative to really elevate your look. To add a bit of glamour maybe a fur coat or cape can really make your outfit. Alternatively a smart wool coat can make for a really polished look."

What Coat Should You Wear to a Wedding?

You should opt for a smart coat for a wedding - your dog-walking anorak or scruffy old duffel coat that you sometimes use as a seat cover on the tube probably won't cut it, unless you're stashing it away on arrival. It's worth investing in a smarter coat for weddings and other events as the right coat becomes part of your outfit and enhances your overall look.

What Coat Should You Wear for a Winter Wedding?

Go for a smart coat for a winter wedding - you want something cosy but with a bit more of a formal feel. Make sure it coordinates with your outfit, as you'll probably be wearing it lots!

Annabel's says, "A smart yet practical choice for a winter wedding could be a double breasted tailored coat. A midi coat would work well if you’re wearing a longer dress. A blazer can be a really good option worn open over a slip or floral dress.

Can You Wear a White Coat to a Wedding?

It's always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to wearing white at a wedding, but wearing a white coat to a wedding is a little different. As long as it doesn't have a bridal feel to it, and you're pairing it with a non-white outfit, a white coat can be a nice addition!

Annabel suggests, "You can wear a white coat to a wedding as long as the dress is a different colour. A good cream coat can make an outfit look really premium, and elevate the look."

Now you've got your outfit - complete with coat - sorted for the wedding, it's time to think about what wedding gift you're going to buy!
