What defines a simple wedding dress?

“A simple wedding dress has a very minimalist style, and the fabric is usually plain with little or no embellishments,” says Caroline Black, co-founder of North London bridal boutique Evelie.

“Most simple wedding dresses will have a key design or stand-out feature that’s highlighted by the simple cut and style of the dress – this could be the shape of the dress or how the fabric is cut on the neckline, bodice, on the back or the skirt, for example.

“And even though the overall design is minimalistic, that one key design feature will stand out in a very understated way,” she adds.

“For me, a simple wedding dress is all about clean lines, a refined silhouette and luxurious fabrics that speak for themselves,” adds Frida Hoffman-Clark, founder and designer at bridal label Kladek Paris.

How can I accessorise a simple wedding dress?

“For a simple wedding dress, the accessory options are endless and if you want to add more to your look you really can go all-out – choose from statement veils or a headpiece, some earrings and even amazing shoes,” says Caroline.

Below, the boutique owner shares her tips for accessorising simple wedding dresses:

Accessorising with veils: A simple wedding dress is perfect for a detailed or embellished veil. Here are seven different veil styles I get brides to try on when they’re choosing a veil:

  • Raw cut edge veil – this is a barely-there veil where the look is very subtle.
  • Corded or stitched cut edge veil – this is still subtle, but the edging helps frame the dress and train.
  • Braided cut edge veil – this works well with a matte or crepe dress.
  • Scattered pearl veil – this style is soft, dreamy and romantic.
  • Minimal lace edge veil – pops of lace will really help to frame the dress.
  • Detailed lace veil – a statement Dolce Vita-style veil which has edging all around.
  • Floral lace veil – this creates a romantic look, with soft floral lace dotted around the edge.

Accessorising with a headpiece: If you aren’t going to wear a veil, a wedding headband or headpiece is a great alternative. A headpiece can be worn from the ceremony right through to the evening party and will really complement a minimalist look.

Accessorising with statement earrings: If you don't like the idea of wearing something in your hair then you can make it all about amazing statement earrings or wedding jewellery. Wedding earrings can be worn for the ceremony or added in the evening to change up your look.

Where can I buy simple wedding dresses?

Our edit of simple wedding dresses features a vibrant mix of high street and designer dresses. RIXO, Reformation, Whistles and Rat & Boa offer a gorgeous selection of simple elegant wedding dresses at great price points, while designers such as Justin Alexander, Savannah Miller, Hera Couture and Halfpenny London offer minimalist designs crafted from the most divine fabrics and cut to perfection.

How do I style a simple wedding dress to stand out?

It’s important to remember that just because the cut and style of your wedding dress is simple doesn’t mean it won’t look striking. Lots of brides who choose to opt for a more refined approach still create impact with their look – “it’s all in the quality of the fabrics and fit,” says Frida.

Good-quality fabric and a well-cut dress will make your body sing, but if you feel like you need something more, a simple dress could be enhanced with an embellished belt, some pastel-coloured shoes or a creative bouquet.

Think you’re ready to say yes to a dress? Now it’s time to decide on one of these natural makeup looks to go with it.
