FAQ: Wearing a Wedding Dress with Sleeves

To help answer some of your most commonly asked questions on wedding dresses with sleeves, we caught up with Rebecca Baddeley, director of long-established bridal boutique TDR Bridal in Birmingham for her expert advice.

What are the most popular styles of long-sleeved wedding dresses?

“Long-sleeved wedding dresses are having a moment right now and it’s easy to see why,” says Rebecca. “They were one of the biggest trends at Bridal Fashion Week and we don’t see them fading anytime soon.

“One of the most loved styles is the illusion sleeve, where sheer tulle or lace creates a soft and romantic effect with appliqué details that seem to ‘float’ on the skin – it’s a trend our brides can’t get enough of.

“For those after a more relaxed vibe, bohemian-inspired sleeves with dreamy bishop or bell shapes are hugely popular, while sleek crepe sleeves on the other hand are perfect for brides who lean towards a modern and minimalist look.

“Finally, for anyone who wants to make a statement, puffed or balloon sleeves bring volume and drama in all the right ways,” she adds.

What are the best fabrics for long-sleeved wedding dresses?

“The fabric really sets the tone for the look and feel of long sleeves,” says Rebecca. “Lace and tulle are always favourites because they’re lightweight, versatile and work beautifully for illusion designs or more structured looks.

“Crepe is another go-to – it hugs the arm in a smooth, elegant way and has such a chic finish. For something a little more luxurious, silk and satin bring a polished and glossy touch, while chiffon and organza are perfect for adding softness and subtle volume,” she adds.

“We love sleeves made from stretch fabrics, too – they give you that extra bit of comfort without compromising style. After all, feeling amazing in your dress is just as important as looking amazing!”

How do I choose the right long-sleeved wedding dress for my body shape?

“It’s all about finding the style that flatters your figure while staying true to your vibe,” reveals Rebecca. “Petite brides usually suit slimmer, fitted sleeves that elongate the arm, while taller brides can really pull off a dramatic bishop or puff sleeve.

“Curvier brides often love the clean lines of crepe or satin sleeves, which really help to create an elegant, elongated effect, while illusion lace or off-the-shoulder sleeves can also soften the shoulders beautifully,” she adds.

“Elsewhere, if you’ve got slender arms, embellished or lace sleeves add texture, giving a gorgeous balance that looks incredible in photos.”

Can long-sleeved wedding dresses be altered easily?

“Sleeves can definitely be altered, though how simple it is depends on the fabric and design,” suggests Rebecca. “Shortening or lengthening is usually straightforward, and sleeves can be tapered or loosened for a better fit.

“More intricate work – like adjusting heavily beaded or embellished sleeves – may take a bit more time. Many designers now offer detachable or customisable sleeves, which is such a fun option. Brides can switch up their look by removing the sleeves partway through their big day!”

Can long-sleeved wedding dresses be worn for summer weddings?

Of course, long-sleeved wedding dresses are a great choice for those getting married in the autumn and winter months, since they’ll naturally be warmer than their sleeveless counterparts and may save you needing to look for a jacket or cover-up. However, that’s not to say a long-sleeved wedding gown can’t also be worn in the summer.

“It’s about choosing the right fabric and design,” suggests Rebecca. “Lightweight options like illusion lace, sheer tulle or chiffon keeps things breathable and comfortable. Brides often balance out the coverage with open backs, plunging necklines or sheer panels, too – so you still get that airy feel while keeping the elegance of sleeves.

“I’d just suggest avoiding heavier fabrics like thick satin or brocade for summer, and instead lean into those lighter and softer materials.”

What accessories go best with long-sleeved wedding dresses?

“When it comes to accessorising a long-sleeved gown, it’s about keeping the balance,” says Rebecca. “Because the arms are covered, statement earrings are a great way to draw attention to the face. Veils can range from simple fingertip length to full-on cathedral drama, depending on your mood, while a delicate belt always works wonders for defining the waist, especially if the sleeves are adding volume.

“For hair, chic accessories such as pins, tiaras or headbands often complement the look without overpowering it. And don’t forget the shoes – whether you go for sparkle, a pop of colour or something modern and minimalist, they’re the perfect finishing touch to show off your personality,” she adds.

How do I style my hair with a long-sleeved wedding dress?

Your choice of hairstyle will very much depend on the style – and more crucially – the neckline of your dress.

While a sleek up do pinned at the nape of the neck or a classic ponytail matches the elegance and sophisticated of a high-neck dress, bateau or off-the-shoulder necklines call for a hairstyle that elegantly shows off your shoulders and décolletage – think a romantic half-up, half-down style or face-framing barrel curls.

Can I find plus-size long-sleeved wedding dresses?

There are lots of designers out there expanding their size ranges, offering a made-to-order service or introducing dedicated Curve collections. We’ve included a handful of our favourite plus size bridal designers above, but notable favourites include Hera Couture Curve, True Bride, Halfpenny London and Grace Loves Lace.

“For the timeless bride who loves elegance with a classic twist, Justin Alexander is an undeniable favourite, while for those taken by intricate artistry, Enzoani, Morilee and Veni Infantino specialise in illusion lace and soft tulle sleeves that feel ethereal and feminine,” adds Rebecca.
