Choosing the right wedding photographer & style that works for you.

After sixteen years experience as a Derby wedding photographer & videographer Derbyshire Wedding Events helps couples make an educated choice.

Derbyshire Wedding Events Helps couples maken the best choice, sharing over sixteen years experience as a Derby Wedding Photographer and Videographer.

You might love one photographer’s work, dislike another’s, and still struggle to say why. That is usually where wedding photography styles explained properly can help. Once you understand the differences between documentary, traditional, editorial and fine art approaches, choosing the right photographer becomes far less overwhelming and far more personal.

The truth is, most couples are not looking for a label. You are looking for a feeling. You want to know whether your photographs will look natural or polished, relaxed or dramatic, guided or completely unobtrusive. Style shapes all of that, and it affects not only how your gallery looks afterwards, but how your wedding day feels while it is being photographed.

Wedding photography styles explained in real terms

Photography styles can sound more complicated than they really are. In practice, they come down to how your photographer sees the day, how much direction they give, and what kind of final images matter most to you.

Some photographers focus on genuine moments as they unfold. Others place more emphasis on carefully arranged portraits. Some edit with soft, airy tones, while others prefer rich contrast or a cinematic finish. None of these choices are automatically better than the others. The best fit depends on your personalities, your plans, and what sort of memories you want to look back on in ten or twenty years.

A good photographer will often blend more than one style. That is worth knowing because very few weddings can be covered well with a single approach from start to finish. Group photographs need structure. Couple portraits usually benefit from some guidance. The speeches and dance floor are often strongest when captured naturally. Style is not always one fixed box. It is often a balance.

Documentary wedding photography

Documentary photography is often the style couples mention first, especially if they are worried about feeling awkward in front of the camera. The aim is to capture real moments as they happen, with as little interruption as possible. Think laughter during the bridal preparations, a parent’s reaction during the ceremony, children racing around after the confetti, or guests hugging during the drinks reception.

This style suits couples who want their day recorded honestly rather than heavily directed. It can create images that feel alive, emotional and full of detail. When done well, documentary coverage tells the story of the day as it naturally unfolded, not as it was staged to look.

That said, documentary does not mean invisible magic with no planning at all. A photographer still needs experience, anticipation and good judgement. They need to know where to stand, when to step in, and when to stay back. If you also want beautifully polished family portraits or striking couple photographs, you may want someone who combines documentary coverage with a more guided approach at key points.

Traditional wedding photography

Traditional wedding photography is more posed and structured. This is the style many people associate with classic family group photographs, formal portraits, and key moments captured with everyone looking at the camera.

There is a reason this style has endured. It produces clear, timeless records of the people who mattered most on the day. For many couples, those family group shots become some of the most valued photographs over time. Grandparents, extended family and guests from different parts of life are rarely all together in one place, so it makes sense to photograph that properly.

The trade-off is that traditional photography requires more direction and a little more time. If it is overdone, it can start to feel rigid. But when handled well, it gives you order without taking over the day. A calm photographer who can organise groups efficiently makes a huge difference here.

Editorial wedding photography

Editorial photography takes inspiration from fashion magazines and luxury campaigns. It is polished, stylish and often intentionally dramatic. Posing, composition, location and lighting all play a stronger role, and the final images tend to feel refined and high end.

This approach is ideal for couples who love elegance, design and a more curated look. If your venue styling, outfit details and overall aesthetic are important to you, editorial photography can showcase them beautifully. It often works especially well in grand venues, city weddings, or celebrations with a strong visual concept.

The thing to consider is that editorial images usually need more involvement from both photographer and couple. There may be more posing, more awareness of posture and movement, and more time carved out for portraits. That is not a problem if you enjoy the process. If you are hoping to almost forget the camera is there all day, a purely editorial approach may not feel as natural.

Fine art wedding photography

Fine art wedding photography overlaps with editorial in places, but it is usually softer, more romantic and more focused on beauty, light and composition. It often features delicate tones, thoughtful framing and a gentle, timeless feel.

Couples are often drawn to fine art imagery because it feels elegant without being too stiff. Flowers, table details, architecture and quiet in-between moments can all be photographed in a way that feels intentional and artistic. It suits weddings where atmosphere matters just as much as action.

As with editorial work, the photographer’s eye plays a major role. Fine art coverage can be stunning, but if your priority is a busy gallery full of spontaneous reactions and unfiltered moments, you may want to make sure the photographer also has strong documentary instincts.

Dark and moody, light and airy, and true-to-colour editing

When couples talk about style, they are often actually responding to editing. Two photographers can capture the same moment in similar ways but present it very differently afterwards.

Light and airy editing tends to feel bright, soft and romantic. It is popular for spring and summer weddings and can create a dreamy look. Dark and moody editing leans into richer shadows, deeper tones and a more dramatic atmosphere. True-to-colour editing aims to keep colours looking natural and balanced, which can help photographs age well and reflect the day as it really looked.

This is one of those areas where personal taste matters, but so does longevity. Trend-led editing can look striking now and feel dated later. That does not mean you should avoid character or personality in your gallery. It simply means it is worth asking yourself whether you still want to love these images years from now, not just on social media next month.

Which style suits your wedding best?

There is no universal answer because the right style depends on both your personalities and your plans. A relaxed countryside wedding with lots of candid moments may suit a documentary-led approach. A stylish venue celebration with dramatic interiors may lend itself beautifully to editorial portraits. A family-focused wedding with several generations attending may need a stronger traditional element for group photographs.

It also depends on how you feel about being photographed. If the idea of posing fills you with dread, you will probably be happier with someone who keeps things natural and low pressure. If you enjoy dressing up, love fashion and want portraits that feel polished, a more guided style could be exactly right.

One of the best things you can do is look beyond the highlight shots. Ask to see full wedding galleries. A few beautiful images on a website or social feed can be persuasive, but a full gallery tells you whether the photographer can handle the whole day consistently - bright sun, dark ceremony rooms, fast-moving moments, family formals and evening celebrations included.

Questions worth asking before you book

When couples speak to me, I always think clarity helps more than jargon. Instead of asking a photographer to define themselves with a fashionable label, ask how they actually work on the day.

Will they give direction during portraits? How do they handle family group photographs? Do they prefer to stay in the background during the ceremony? How much time do they recommend for couple portraits? What happens if the weather changes? Those answers will often tell you more than any single style description.

You should also ask yourself what matters most once the day is over. Do you want a gallery full of emotion and storytelling? Do you want striking portraits for the wall? Do you want a balanced mix that feels natural but still polished? Most couples are somewhere in the middle, which is why an adaptable photographer can be such a good fit.

At Derbyshire Wedding Events, that balance matters because no two weddings feel the same. Some couples want plenty of guidance. Others want the camera to blend quietly into the background. The best service comes from listening first and shaping the coverage around the people in front of the lens, not forcing every wedding into one formula.

Wedding photography styles explained with one final piece of advice

Do not choose a style just because it is fashionable. Choose the one that feels most like you. Your wedding photographs should not only look beautiful - they should feel honest, comfortable and worth returning to for the rest of your life.

If a photographer’s work gives you confidence, if their approach sounds calm and reassuring, and if their images make you feel something genuine, you are probably looking in the right direction. That instinct matters more than any trend ever will.

Most importantly, this is YOUR day. Feel free to express your thoughts, aspirations and wishes openly to your photographer. No question is a silly question. Feel free to tell the photographer what exactly and how you would like your story to be remembered and told and your photographer is obliged to take note of that.

Total confidence.

Straight away we felt confident that Carlo would deliver just what we wanted for our wedding photography. His fast response to our initial investigative call and his easy communication made us feel he was the photographer for us.
Visiting his studio to discuss our requirements and a complimentary shoot confirmed we were right. He listened to us and without any hard sell took on board what we wanted from our day.
Throughout the process Carlo listened and communicated well.
When the day came (and it was a hot one!) Carlo put us all at ease going above and beyond what we expected. The resulting photos have brought tears to our eyes when we see how well he has captured each moment and ours and our guests reactions. Even over a busy weekend he quickly got our lovely photos to us to view while on honeymoon. We would 100% recommend Derbyshire Wedding Events. Thank you Carlo.

Top 1 percent. I would definitely recommend.

Carlo Laurenti from Derbyshire wedding events, well what can I say. He is absolutely fantastic, his work is second to none. He is an absolute superstar with children and adults alike, all ages, backgrounds, race, religion, disability, gender and Lgbtq+ and more. He is an incredible human who takes and produces the most amazing photography, videography and dare I say it, he's also a dab hand at discography too. (Although I did not personally experience either his discography or videography qualities myself). I will definitely be utilising Carlos services again in the future. I definitely and extremely highly recommend Carlo Laurenti and Derbyshire wedding events to any bride and groom for a wedding day like no other.

Brilliant!

Carlo has been incredible throughout and he captured our wedding day perfectly. We’d already hired a photographer before deciding we wanted a videographer too, but Carlo worked really well with our photographer. Carlo made me and my husband feel at ease and was great at telling us his ideas for shots which we really appreciated as neither of us are good in front of a camera, but Carlo also captured all of the natural moments between us and our guests also. Communication has been brilliant. Carlo got on well with everybody and our guests have complimented him also, he’s very relaxed, easy going but still professional and polite. 10/10, would highly recommend!

Carlo has a real talent for making you feel at ease in front of the camera, which made a huge difference for us and our guests. He truly managed to capture the emotion, atmosphere, and joy of the day perfectly.

Amazing photographer

Carlo was absolutely brilliant. He was so reassuring and patient with everyone, was happy to accept ideas from myself or my maid of honour and suggested some great choices as well. Even though we ended up running behind on the morning he had no complaints and when my husband was getting a bit overwhelmed from having so many photos taken in a row after the ceremony (as he’s not really a photo person) he could tell and grabbed the bridesmaid’s for photos without being asked so we could have a bit of time to ourselves. He took hundreds of photos without complaint, including requested portraits from our guests. He was soo funny and attentive and when i was nervous made me feel at ease. All my guests complimented him to us from start to finish. This comment is only a small fraction of how happy i was with him and his lovely wife Daniella and would definitely recommend his services. I haven’t got my official wedding photos yet (only because the wedding was only 2 days ago) but i’m sure when we do they will be amazing! Thank you for all your help and support on our special day Carlo and Daniella xxx
