The Hospitium is a wedding venue located in York City Centre, North Yorkshire, a truly charming and unique setting for your wedding. The 14th century listed building is settled within the stunning York Museum Gardens, overlooked by St Mary’s Abbey, providing the perfect backdrop for your wedding photographs.

Facilities and Capacity

The venue is set over two floors, allowing you and your guests to celebrate the whole day exclusively in one stunning place. The Hospitium is licensed to hold civil ceremonies and partnerships in a peaceful, private setting for an intimate celebration. This location can accommodate up to 100 guests for a ceremony, 120 guests for the wedding breakfast, and up to 150 for an evening reception. The downstairs floor boasts original 14th century flagstones, pillars, and stone walls. The pillars can be dressed in foliage and flowers to give a whimsical garden aesthetic. Upstairs, the wedding breakfast room features a rustic style of vaulted ceilings and large windows, allowing for natural light to flood the room. The Hospitium if fully accessible, with a ram, lift, and accessible toilet.

Perfect Wedding Venue

The Hospitium is a stunning venue and set in the beautiful museum garden in the heart of York. They offer a “whirlwind” package for couples who book a date within 6 months, which is what we went with. The team were so helpful and friendly and made the planning process easy and simple. 

Within the package you get the venue, their decorations, catering, flowers, cake and dj. It was so nice having all of this sorted and not having to try and coordinate multiple suppliers, and because they all know the venue so well they knew what would work best. 

All of the staff who helped to run the day were calm, friendly and professional. We had a few guest issues due to the heat, but they kept everything running smoothly and the day was amazing. 

After 6pm the museum gardens close to the public so you have it all to yourselves for the evening which is amazing. The gardens have the perfect backdrop for photos, especially with the ruins in.

Added to this, as it is run and owned by York Museum Trust, the money goes towards keeping the various museums and gardens in York running and open to the public for the future. It’s a real win-win!

I couldn’t recommend it anymore highly as the perfect place for a wedding!

A stunning venue for a special day

From start to finish, this was an absolute dream of a venue. We were taken through everything by the amazing Claire, who covered every detail and made us feel calm and comfortable that the day would run smoothly. Her and her team made everything so special. There were a couple of mishaps, but what was great was that they were so happy to receive comments and use that info to make changes on future events.

Aside from all that, the venue is stunning and made for the most gorgeous setting and photos.Having the gardens from 6pm as well meant we could get the most phenomenal couples photos. Their accessibility was brilliant as well, ensuring guests with various requirements were cared for. With that, their caterers and DJ suppliers were fantastic.

Nowhere else would have felt right for our wedding and that is in a large part down to the precision, planning and care of the team at The Hospitium.

Amazing venue in the center of York!

Inrecently visited the hospitium to photograph a friends wedding and was completely taken aback at how amazing the place is. The staff are super switched on and was an absolute pleasure getting to work with them!

Gorgeous venue and fantastic service

We celebrated our wedding at the Hospitium in October 2024. The Hospitium staff has been extremely helpful and dedicated to us having the best day. We had support every step of the way and the staff was very responsive and flexible. We opted for the Whirlwind Package and we found it was a great option!

Such a wonderful venue! 🌟

My husband and I got married in August 2024 at The Hospitium in York. We set the date a year in advance, and began planning our wedding with Ava, from the venue’s team. Ava was incredibly helpful, and the communication was brilliant throughout. We visited the venue numerous times to help us with our planning, and the Hospitium were very accommodating with this. 4 weeks prior to our wedding, we had a sit down meeting to talk through exact timings, last-minute special requests etc. All of this information was then given to staff working on the day. The whole experience felt very easy and organised - and everyone on the team was so kind and welcoming. We can’t recommend the Hospitium enough! We would also suggest that those planning on getting married here consider Mollie and Mauve for your flowers and Mine and Thine for your photography. They were just wonderful suppliers and familiar with the venue! ☺️

Most Fantastic Wedding Ever! (18.05)

We had the most fantastic wedding day at the Hospitium, as did all our guests! We were looked after from the very start by every member of the team, both during the planning process and on the actual day. Nothing was too much hassle and we were continually at ease and able to just enjoy our day to the fullest! We cannot thank the team at the Hospitium enough for making our dream day a reality in the most gorgeous and stunning venue we've ever seen!

Winter Wedding

We had our wedding here out of season and were impressed from the start. We choose the Hospitium not only due to its beautiful location but also due to the money that you pay for the venue going to the Yorkshire Museum Trust which helps to look after this historic building in York. The build up to our day went without issue, everyone in the team went out of their way to help us and could not do enough for us. We were able to re look at the venue again due to my partner being away when I originally viewed it with no hassle. The day itself again went without a hitch the team were extremely attentive and understanding and we felt at ease throughout the whole day from setting up to the end of the night. We honestly could not recommend the Hospitium enough and all our family and friends were blown away.

Wonderful Wedding Venue in Historic Setting

We had the most wonderful wedding reception at the Hospitium. Melody and the team couldn't have been more helpful and easy to work with in the run up to the day and during the event. It was the perfect day for us and our guests.

Phenomenal venue

We chose this venue based on how exceptional the staff were. It didn't feel like the other venues we visited which all felt so much like a conveyor belt of weddings, with no personality at all.
The staff at the Hospitium were exemplary - so so helpful and enthusiastic. Great communication and really professional. If i were to do it all over again, I would still chose this venue. The only caveat would be that it would have been nice to have had the option of a different caterer (though Bradshaws were superb)

Perfect wedding venue!

Claire and the team were extremely helpful in the run up to the big day and then from start to finish on the day, meaning that we didn't have to worry about a thing. Wedding of our Dreams

We could not be happier with our choice of the Hospitium as our wedding venue. Having only got engaged in October 2017, we had a very short engagement! When I contacted the Hospitium, we went to look round the very next day! As soon as we saw it, we fell in love. It is so beautiful inside and the location is unrivalled.
Throughout the whole planning process, Claire and Eve the wedding planners were so helpful, responding to emails amazingly quickly and always being supportive and lovely.
On the day itself, the venue looked absolutely magical, thanks in part to the staff who helped us set everything up! There were so many people around making sure everything ran perfectly - from the security guards, to Claire and Eve, to all the other staff at the venue constantly ensuring everyone was having a great time. The catering from Bradshaws was delicious - several of our guests have contacted us to say it was the best wedding food they've ever had - and especially good at catering for special diets. We had children, vegans, vegetarians, coeliacs and nut allergies and every single person got a three-course meal of impeccable standards.
It is also a really accessible venue. We had elderly grandparents in attendance and it was great that there was a ramp into the venue, a lift to the upper level and a disabled toilet. Staff were very helpful in opening the Marygate gates so that taxis could drive right up to the door, meaning those who struggled to walk didn't have to trek across the gardens and could be dropped off and picked up easily.
I would 100% recommend the Hospitium as a wedding venue as I think it is such good value for a fantastic setting and wonderful staff.

Perfect winter wedding!

We got married here on 9th December, it's a perfect venue for a wedding and everyone commented on how unique and special the venue was. The Hospitium staff and Bradshaws catering staff were superb from start to finish during our planning and day itself. It's great value too compared to other venues we look at and nice that it contributes towards the upkeep of the museum gardens. Nothing to fault with anything, it's a special venue with great staff.

The ceremony room downstairs is beautiful with the stone columns and window seats. Our florist Fiona Hogg did an incredible job with decorating it. The upstairs room for the meal is great to not have any turnaround time between the night do and is ideal for the 100 people we had.

Couldn't recommend this highly enough for a wedding or just a visit. Tucked away in the centre of York you don't feel at all like you're in a city centre.

Fishlock and Jenkins wedding 1st April 2017

Our daughter Adelle was married to David And held their reception at the Hospitium.
From our first viewing to the end of the reception everything was first class.
The staff were brilliant the catering exceptional from Bradshaws.
The ultimate compliment is to say if the wedding was taking place next week we would not change a single thing.
A big thank you to all concerned. Brilliant, and we have no reservations in recommending this venue to anyone.

Amazing wedding venue

In September our daughter got married at The Hospitium and it was just THE MOST PERFECT day! The building is absolutely beautiful- full of history and character- and the setting within the museum gardens is delightful. The gardens and surroundings are picturesque In every season, and the Abbey ruins are wonderful for photographs.
The staff at The Hospitium were just fantastic. We were shown round early in the year by Claire who oversaw the whole process of organising the wedding and who finally supervised the actual event. We cannot thank Claire and also Eve enough for all their help- it was faultless and nothing was too much trouble for them. Bradshaw's the caterers were also brilliant, again we could not fault them. Everyone who attended the wedding said what a fantastic wedding it was, with many guests commenting that it was one of the the best weddings that they had attended. Thank you once again for a perfect day!

The Perfect Wedding

We had our wedding here on 19th of December 2015.
The intimacy of this historical venue along with its beautiful museum grounds, and the city of York offered a trip to be remembered by our guests who flew from all over the world. The staff was kind, warm and professional. The food was absolutely wonderful. We wished we all had a bigger stomache! It was delicious! It truly was the perfect day for us and all of our guests.
