About
About Ingress Abbey
Ingress Abbey is a distinctive historic wedding venue in Greenhithe, Kent, offering couples an elegant and characterful setting in which to create a celebration that feels entirely their own. Looking out over the stone stairs and lawns to the Thames, beautiful Grade II listed Tudor Gothic mansion combines historic architecture, opulent interiors and surrounding grounds, providing a unique backdrop for intimate weddings and special occasions. Guests coming from London and surrounds are well served: the M25 is close, and both Greenhithe and Ebbsfleet International stations are nearby.
The present house built in 1833 for James Harmer, an Alderman of the City of London, and designed by Charles Moreing. Its Tudor Gothic style and details give the Abbey its unique character. The Abbey is said to include stone from Old London Bridge and the wider surrounds include multiple follies. The estate underneath it is much older. In 1363 Edward III endowed the manor on the Dominican nuns of Dartford Priory, who held it as a manor farm and chalk working. At the Dissolution the Crown took the site back. Henry VIII kept it and had it rebuilt as a royal retreat for visits to the coast. Jane Fane, Abbess of Dartford, was the last head of the community to hold the estate before it returned to the Crown.
In the 1760s John Calcraft commissioned Lancelot "Capability" Brown to reshape the park and open views to the Thames; Brown worked here between 1763 and 1772. The Victorian poet Eliza Cook later stayed at the Abbey and wrote some of her best-known poems from the house, including "The Old Armchair", before her move to Greenwich, the Cutty Sark lay moored off the estate.
