Chalet Saunton, Devon: Wedding Venue & Mini-Moon Review

From chic, minimal interiors to breathtaking beach views, we discover why couples should say ‘I do’ to a wedding or minimoon at Chalet Saunton

Chalet Saunton isn’t like other coastal wedding venues. For starters, the venue is actually made up of sleek, luxury self-catering apartments with some of the most Instagram-friendly interiors we’ve seen.

It also boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK, with breathtaking views over Saunton Sands. Its rugged cliffside setting, combined with the service offered by their passionate team of professionals, makes this a wedding venue that’s totally unique.

Editor Sarah headed to Chalet Saunton to discover why this coastal gem is well worth adding to your wedding venue shortlist…

Location

Standing proudly above North Devon’s most scenic beach, Chalet Saunton is an exclusive apart-hotel that’s home to seven luxury three-bedroom apartments and a stunning two-bedroom top floor penthouse (complete with private balcony – more on that later).

The location is one of the main factors that makes Chalet Saunton so special, and it’s clear that every effort was made to highlight the views when the property was developed. The chalet overlooks Saunton Sands – three miles of golden sandy beach and one of the most popular surfing spots around.

Each apartment comes with a wraparound sea-facing balcony or terrace, so wherever you are in the open-plan living area you can’t help but lose track of time staring out to the beach below. From sunrise till sunset, we were totally mesmerised by the views (visiting during a thunderstorm for some extra drama is highly recommended!).

Chalet Saunton is easily accessible for wedding parties (it’s 1 hour 58 minutes from London Paddington) although a car is advisable for anyone wanting to explore the surrounding area.

Style & Vibe

Chalet Saunton, Devon

Owner Tim Fleming built the chalet on the site of his childhood home in 2017, and his passion for the area is clear from the attention to detail throughout the property. The rooms are huge and filled with light, which streams in via the impressive Crittall French doors.

‘Minimalist luxury’ is the perfect way to describe the sleek design of each apartment – with modern décor (think white cotton bedlinen and pale grey marble bathrooms) and state-of-the-art appliances.

Every little touch has been thought of throughout to ensure maximum comfort without compromising on style, from the underfloor heating and striking artwork to the Nespresso coffee machine and wine fridge.

Food & Drink

Chalet Saunton’s housekeeper, Lisa – from whom we received quite possibly the warmest welcome we’ve ever encountered – makes sure all guests are treated to some breakfast essentials, including locally sourced eggs, bacon, bread and mushrooms.

She’s also on hand to arrange and accept a grocery delivery, so we made use of the luxury kitchen to cook for ourselves one night.

If you’re planning on heading out, there are lots of great dining options a short drive away. We loved At One in neighbouring Braunton, or for serious foodies there’s the Michelin starred Olive Room in Ilfracombe.

What to Do

The Chalet is just a five-minute walk via a small path to Saunton Sands, making it ideal for plenty of wanders along the beach. It’s also one of the most popular surfing spots in the country (although, if you’re anything like me you’ll be perfectly happy watching from a warm and dry distance!).

If surfing does float your… board?… then Walking on Waves, run by former British and European Champion Sarah Whiteley, offer lessons aimed at all levels (prices start at £40 for 1.5 hours private coaching).

Dogs are welcome – scratch that, practically encouraged – at Chalet Saunton, where they can enjoy the beach all year round followed by a warm wash from the taps outside the apartments.

Heading out for the night? Lisa is happy to arrange dog sitting or babysitting. All you need to worry about is which of the local pubs you’re planning to visit!

What to Instagram

Chalet Saunton

Ok, so we might have mentioned the views a couple of times already, but they really do lend themselves to plenty of Instagram opportunities. For the best view, head to the penthouse where you can stand out on the balcony overlooking the sand below.

Interior buffs will love the stylish décor and find plenty to snap inside too, including that dreamy marble bathroom…

Best For…

Whilst Chalet Saunton lends itself perfectly to a UK mini-moon retreat, it’s definitely worth considering as a chic coastal wedding venue too. Whether you’re hoping to host an intimate celebration or something bigger for up to 120 people, the entire property and grounds are available for exclusive hire, so you really do have complete freedom to host the day of your dreams.

The team will go above and beyond to create a wedding that’s unique to you – from wine tasting and live music to a pop-up cocktail bar, cigar lounge, fire pit and fireworks. Combined with that view, it’s not difficult to see what makes Chalet Saunton such a special spot to say ‘I do’!
