Hi, I’m Josh – the guy behind Joshua Haken Photography.
I’m a documentary-style wedding photographer based in Oxford, and I believe wedding photography should feel natural. My approach is relaxed and unobtrusive—75% of the time I’m quietly capturing real, unfiltered moments; the other 25%, I’ll step in for the important shots like group photos and couple portraits.
You won’t find me shouting directions or staging fake laughs. Instead, I focus on capturing genuine emotion as it unfolds—so you can be fully present on your wedding day, without feeling like you’re in a photo shoot.
A bit about me:
Before photography, I served as a Royal Engineer in the Army for seven years, then retrained as a gas engineer. These days, you’ll find me shooting weddings across Oxfordshire and editing photos on my houseboat moored along the Thames. It’s been a journey, and I bring that calm, steady presence to every wedding I shoot.

Pure magic!
Joshua captured the mood of our wedding perfectly—laid back, warm, happy, and full of love. He melted into the background, and I hardly noticed him during the ceremony. He was able to capture all those priceless moments without ever being intrusive. I felt truly at ease, and so did my husband—who is much more camera-shy than I am.
I’m especially amazed at how Joshua worked with the light inside the small 12th-century church. It’s such a dark, tricky space, yet the photographs feel so soft, light, and warm. The tones he achieved are everything I had hoped for—there’s this almost nostalgic quality to them that makes the images feel timeless. Pure magic.
Some of my favourite shots are of my father and me walking toward the church. Those photos in particular feel as though they could have been taken in any era, which makes them incredibly special. I know they’ll be treasured in my family for generations to come.
Joshua managed to capture the seriousness of the event but also the joy and happiness that filled the day afterwards, with fun staged images complemented by candid shots of ourselves and our guests. He took on board some suggestions I had for certain images, while also using his professional knowledge to ensure we had the perfect shots—kindly giving us small directional tweaks, something that only comes with real experience.
We chose to book Joshua just for the ceremony and a couple of hours of the reception, as our wedding had a very small guest list, and yet I now have so many superb photographs to choose from!
Joshua arrived promptly at the church, smartly dressed with a cracking smile, ready for the event. He spoke to the minister and verger about the details of the ceremony and spent time familiarising himself with the venue—showing real dedication and professionalism.
So, to Joshua, thank you again—not only for your incredible skill and artistry, but also for capturing the true feeling of the day. To Tom and me, these are not just photographs; they are our day brought to life, and we feel so lucky to have them.

The day went perfect, Josh was already at the venue waiting when we arrived getting snaps of the guests and family members. The shots of the ceremony came out better than we had hoped for especially as Josh had stepped in last minute, my friends and family had only good things to say about how pleasant he was and even wanted his details for their own weddings next year!
Overall my wife and I are so happy the other photographer dropped out so we had Josh shooting our special day, we HIGHLY recommend!
