Frequently Asked Questions

What does a wedding celebrant do?

As your wedding celebrant, I’d create and lead a personalised, meaningful ceremony that’s entirely about you. From your love story to your values, family, humour and hopes, your ceremony will reflect who you are as a couple. Unlike a registrar, I’m not restricted by legal wording, licensed premises or templates, which means you can get married wherever, whenever, and however you choose.

How do we book you?

We’ll set up a relaxed, no-obligation chat to see if I’m the right fit for you. If you decide to go ahead, I’ll send you a simple booking form and invoice to secure your date.

We’ll then meet again (in person or via What’s app video call) to plan your ceremony in detail. You’ll also receive a fun and thoughtful questionnaire to help me get to know you both better and hear all about your love story.

Next, I’ll create your full script and send it over to you for you amend, adapt and finally approve.

On the day itself, I’ll arrive at least an hour early to help calm any nerves and make sure everything runs smoothly, liaising with your venue and with the other suppliers and and I’ll stay around until the confetti settles and the drinks are flowing.

Is a celebrant-led wedding legally binding? If it's not, what do we do?

Sadly, in England and Wales, celebrant ceremonies aren’t legally recognised (but fingers crossed for law changes very soon!).

Most couples complete the legal bit at a registry office in a short marriage at the registry office, often called a 2+2 ceremony, as it’s the couple and two witnesses. This is often done a few days beforehand.

If you are getting married at a licenced venue, the registrars can come to the venue and complete the legal ceremony there. This obviously costs more than if you attended the registry office. There are very strict rules around timings and wording as they follow a legal script template which is the same for everyone. There can be very little personalisation of the ceremony, you won’t know who your registrars are, and you don’t meet them beforehand.

My couples think of the 2+2 ceremony as signing the paperwork, and our ceremony as the real wedding celebration

Where can we have our ceremony?

Anywhere you like – and I really mean it. Beaches, woodlands, gardens, barns, family homes, cliff tops, tipis... You’re not limited to just licensed venues, although these are gorgeous too. If it’s special to you, we can create a beautiful ceremony there.

Can we include symbolic elements like handfasting?

Yes please! Handfasting, candle lighting, sand blending, ring blessings, jumping the broom – or something totally your own, I’ll help you weave in any rituals that hold meaning for you. This is your moment, your way.

Can you help us write our vows?

Absolutely. Whether you need full guidance or just a little encouragement, I’ll support you with vow-writing prompts, examples, and feedback. Whether heartfelt or humorous, formal or free-flowing, we’ll find the words that feel right.

We’re not very traditional

Perfect! I specialise in relaxed, warm, and non-traditional ceremonies. Whether you're romantic, rebellious, introverted, spiritual, funny, sentimental – or all of the above – I’ll create something that feels genuine and joyful.

We’re nervous about speaking – can you help?

This is totally normal and yes. I’ll guide you through every step, and we’ll tailor your ceremony to what you’re comfortable with. You can say as much or as little as you like. I can even stay on and read your speeches for you. I’m here to help you feel calm, confident, and excited on the day.

Do you work with LGBTQ+ couples?

With love and pride, ALWAYS. I welcome all couples and celebrate all kinds of love, with warmth, respect and joy.

Do you work with neurodivergent couples or guests?

Yes, ABSOLUTELY, and with genuine care.

I have worked with many neurodivergent individuals and couples, including those who are autistic, ADHD, PDA, or have sensory or processing differences. I understand that ceremonies can sometimes feel overwhelming, so I will work closely with you to create a space and a script that feels safe, respectful, and fully inclusive.

We can adapt the ceremony environment, language, or flow to suit your needs – whether that means avoiding surprises, using visual or written supports, keeping things low-key, or agreeing on clear cues ahead of time. I can also help support your family or guests if they have additional needs.

Whether you want something quiet and calm or joyful and expressive, I’ll work with you to shape a ceremony that honours your preferences and feels right for you. I can also suggest ways to support you throughout your whole wedding day.

You're welcome to tell me exactly what you need – or we can figure it out together, gently and without pressure.

How far do you travel?

I’m based in North Devon and regularly travel across the South West – including Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset, and beyond. Planning something further afield? I’m always happy to discuss destination weddings or adventurous venues.

Sue made our day the best!

We met Sue at a wedding fair - from the moment we met we knew she was the celebrant for us! Sue made all the planning and the day so easy - adding in so much personalisation to our ceremony and really helping us feel more comfortable. She has so many tips and tricks and is always happy to lend a hand. Sue was happy to meet in person and we did calls - always very prompt to answer all questions and helped us wrap our heads round the legal stuff too!
If you want a ceremony that fits your relationship and has your life weaved into it, go with Sue. Couldn't of asked for more! Eternally grateful that she was part of our day x

She’s Amazing

From first meeting Susan at a wedding Fair to the big day she was amazing. We chose Susan because we both liked the hand fasting idea and knew she was the person for the job! We were made to feel calm and relaxed the whole way through the ceremony and the words she wrote from just a few questions we answered it was perfect. We have had so many people saying how lovely and relaxed the ceremony was and that was all down to Susan. So we want to say a massive thank you for making our day that extra bit more special

Sue was the best - our day was perfect

We couldn’t have asked for a better wedding celebrant than Sue. From the very beginning, she took the time to truly get to know us, and that made all the difference. Our ceremony felt so personal, heartfelt, and authentic—exactly what we wanted.

Sue has such a warm and calming presence, and she made us feel completely at ease throughout the entire process. She guided us every step of the way and made sure everything ran smoothly on the day. We honestly couldn’t have done it without her.

So many of our guests commented on how beautiful the ceremony was, and that’s all thanks to Sue. We would recommend her to absolutely everyone. She’s incredible!

More Than a Celebrant – A Truly Special Part of Our Story

I’ve started this review so many times - and for someone who usually has no trouble finding the right words, I’ve found it almost impossible to capture just how grateful we are to Sue. Saying “thank you” feels far too small for the huge role she played in our wedding - both in the run-up and on the day.

From the moment we first met Sue, we knew she was the perfect person to be our Celebrant. It was clear from the outset that she cared deeply - not just about the words she’d say, but about crafting a ceremony that was a true reflection of us as a couple. She took the time to understand who we are, what we value, and how we wanted our day to feel - and she brought all of that to life in the most beautiful way.

Sue didn’t just take the time to get to know us - she got to know our family too. Our two children warmed to her instantly, and on the day itself, it genuinely felt like she was part of our team. The moment I knew she had arrived on site, I felt an immediate sense of calm. Just knowing she was there, quietly making sure everyone was okay and gently guiding people to where they needed to be, was so reassuring. And when I had a mild panic about being late (I was... but it’s fine, right?!), she was calm, supportive, and completely unfazed - exactly what I needed.

Our ceremony was everything we hoped it would be and more - full of fun, laughter, love, and pure and utter joy. Sue introduced us to the tradition of handfasting, which we hadn’t experienced before, and helped us to put our own unique spin on it (tie the knot, take a shot!). It was such a hit with our guests. She also wholeheartedly embraced our 5-year-old son’s dream of being James Bond for the day - helping us orchestrate his surprise ring-bearing mission, complete with the Bond theme tune and gel blasters! Nothing was off-limits; she welcomed every idea with open arms and genuine excitement.

Our guests still tell us it was one of the most unique and joyful ceremonies they’ve ever been to - and that’s thanks to Sue. It was completely perfect.

But Sue’s kindness and support didn’t end with the ceremony. When my husband and his best man - who lives abroad - admitted their nerves around speech-giving, Sue stepped in with compassion and creativity. She worked with them to help craft their speeches and ultimately read them on their behalf during the wedding breakfast. What could have been a stressful part of the day became something deeply moving and heartfelt. Any worries about it being “non-traditional” vanished - there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.

Although we always knew that Sue’s role in the day would come to a natural close after the ceremony, it still felt surprisingly emotional to see her go; she had been such a warm, reassuring presence throughout the whole journey. Sue is so much more than just our celebrant - she became part of our story, and we’ll always think of her with huge affection. I love seeing her posts about other weddings, knowing exactly how much joy and meaning she’s bringing to other couples’ lives, just like she did for us.

Sue is a true professional with a heart of gold. Her warmth, reassurance, and steady presence before and during our wedding meant more than we can say. We will always be grateful to her for helping make our day not only stress-free, but genuinely magical. From the bottom of our hearts - thank you, Sue.

Best. Celebrant. Ever!

I wish I could give Sue 100000 stars - she was incredible!

I found Sue online when searching for a celebrant for our wedding. I'd spoken to a few other celebrants over Zoom but just didn't feel right. As soon as we spoke to Sue, we knew she was IT! Me and my husband both felt emotional in our initial conversation with her - we just looked at each other, nodded and asked her to be our celebrant without even needing to go away and chat about it.

Sue sent us some forms to fill in and then a draft of the ceremony, allowing us to have help but also control. Sue was helpful at every step, even sending us example poems/readings when we were stuck. She gave us ideas we hadn't thought of for where to stand and how to enter. Her advice/expertise was invaluable!

On the day, Sue was organised, calming and kind. Despite my toddler nephews trying to chat during the ceremony, she tactfully redirected their attention!

We cannot recommend Sue enough, she is just the loveliest lady and we were so happy she was part of our special day.

The Fairy Godmother of Marriages 🧚

Sue is amazing ! She stepped in very last minute to help make our special day amazing and that is exactly what she did. With 23 days till our wedding, she wrote our ceremony script, was super communicative and made us feel at ease about our day! The script was truly beautiful and captured us in every way and I’m ever so grateful for all her help in making our day special, family orientated and unique. So many of my guests said how it’s a ceremony they will never forget! If you are debating a celebrant wedding over a registration 100% choose celebrant led (and 100% choose Sue!)! Mrs kyla Parkhouse-Lee

Honestly can’t recommend sue enough! She took the time to really get to know us through phone calls, meeting in person and a small questionnaire for both of us. It really felt like a close friend/family member was doing our ceremony that’s how well she got to know us. She is so lovely and caring and listen to everything we wanted, gave us recommendations and did everything we asked which made our day perfect for us.
