You and your guests are invited to experience all this magnificent historical treasure has to offer. Make your wedding part of the city’s rich and wonderful story, and enjoy a day you’ll never forget.

History

In 1080, Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror, built a motte-and-bailey castle on the site of the old Roman fort; it is from this earlier castle that the city of Newcastle derives its name. Construction of the stone Castle Keep was commissioned in 1168, during the reign of Henry II, the first Plantagenet king. The Black Gate was later added during the reign of Henry III and was completed in 1250. Today, the Keep is a scheduled monument and Black Gate is a Grade I listed building.

Whether you’d prefer to dance the night away with live medieval music, have guards greet your guests on arrival, or have cannon fire announce your wedding in style, here at Newcastle Castle we will help you create a truly bespoke and unique experience by adding a little medieval magic to your special day!

Our beautiful Harbottle Suite, located in the Black Gate, is licensed for civil ceremonies. It can accommodate up to 50 guests, and the gatehouse has a lift for easy accessibility. A Geordie fairytale brought to life

Having our wedding at the Castle saw our dreams quite literally come true. From a small idea to our big day, the Castle staff were there with us every step of the way. The Great Hall was filled with candles and we seated 60 people comfortably. He guests walked up to the grand entrance making it really something special for our guests. The service ran so smoothly and the acoustics of the Great Hall really complemented the Gospel Choir beautifully. And finally a drinks reception on the roof, with those stunning views of the City, it left our guests speechless. But what really made it for us, was the exquisite attention to detail and extra little flourishes and assistance the Castle did for us that really just helped take the stress of planning a wedding away. They were so accommodating - nothing was too much for them. Many Brides (and Grooms of course) will know the apprehension of putting your trust into others to make your special day work - not with these guys! I felt so confident and comfortable and knew they would pull out all the stops to make our day seamless. And of course they did. From our guests arriving to the Great Hall to the stunning drinks reception on the roof - it simply was, well... perfect.

Highly recommend

You cannot put a price on heritage, but nevertheless the value for money of our event at the castle was amazing.

If there were more stars we would score them higher.
We asked the team at Newcastle Castle if they could arrange some entertainment on our wedding day. They organised a display of medieval sword fighting outside on the court yard with mulled wine served in the historic Black Gate. For many of the guests, especially the kids, it was definitely the highlight of the day.

The staff at the castle were very creative in coming with ideas that suited our needs, and everything went very smoothly. We would definitely recommend them.

[note - this review relates to entertainment organised by the Castle as part of our wedding day, not an entire wedding package.]

One fabulous day!!!

We chose Newcastle Castle because it's an iconic building, for it's history and it's beauty. From start to finish, we were treated with respect and anything that could be done to ensure our day went exactly the way we wanted, they made happen. Ruth and the team couldn't be more helpful! I would recommend Newcastle Castle to any couple looking for somewhere incredibly special,
