About
Nigel Blacker is the photographer behind Visionaire — an artist with a restless eye, a fascination for the unusual and an instinct for finding photographs in places other people might simply walk past.
A doorway. A shaft of light. Brutalist concrete. A reflection in a window. The movement of a dress caught for half a second.
For Nigel, almost anything can become part of the photograph.
Established in 1989, Visionaire has grown from more than three decades — and over 1,000 weddings — of constantly looking for a different way to tell the story. The experience is considerable, but the approach has never become formulaic. If anything, Nigel is more interested than ever in challenging what wedding photography is supposed to look like.
His photographs move freely between documentary, fashion and art. One moment might be completely unobserved: a nervous glance, uncontrolled laughter, a hand reaching instinctively for another. The next might be graphic, cinematic or deliberately unexpected — shaped by architecture, movement, shadow, colour or extraordinary light.
There is no desire to make every wedding resemble the last.
Nigel’s work has been recognised among MyWed’s Top 100 Wedding Photographers in the UK and SLR Lounge / Wedding Maps’ Top 100 UK Wedding Photographers, alongside recognition and membership within organisations including Fearless Photographers and World’s Best Wedding Photos. His photography has also been featured by Shotkit, while his professional background spans recognised photographic bodies including the BIPP, MPA, SWPP and RPS.
The accolades are welcome.
But they are not what drives the photographs.
What matters is curiosity.
Nigel approaches a wedding looking for personality rather than perfection — the elegance alongside the chaos, the carefully considered details alongside the wonderfully unpredictable things that nobody could have planned.
For most of the day, his presence is relaxed and unobtrusive. He watches, anticipates and lets events breathe. There are no endless interruptions and no desire to transform the wedding into a day-long photoshoot.
But occasionally the light changes.
A location suddenly becomes interesting.
Or Nigel sees something slightly mad that simply has to be tried.
That is when the documentary photographer gives way to the image-maker.
Five minutes later there may be a photograph that feels closer to a fashion editorial, a film still or a piece of contemporary art than conventional wedding photography.
Visionaire photographs weddings throughout Kent, London, the UK and Europe, with coverage ranging from intimate celebrations to complete multi-day weddings and destination events.
Ultimately, Nigel wants the finished collection to do two things at once: preserve how the wedding genuinely felt, while also containing photographs that could only have been created there, with those people, in that particular moment.
Photographs with atmosphere.
Photographs with personality.
And every so often, photographs that make someone stop and wonder:
“How on earth did he see that?”
Documentary soul. Editorial eye. Artistic instinct. A little unpredictability.
