How Pretty Smithy Bridal began

When Amy, the boutique's owner, went wedding dress shopping herself, Pretty Smithy Bridal hadn't even become a dream yet. What struck her was just how much the journey matters — the nerves, the excitement, the absolute joy of finding the one. It's a day a bride remembers forever, and it deserves to be as wonderful as it can possibly be.

So when she opened Pretty Smithy Bridal, she built exactly that: a dress journey shaped around each individual bride who walks through the door. Expertise and honest, kind-hearted advice, paired with a stunning array of hand-picked designer gowns — all of it there to help every bride find her absolute dream dress.

Inside the boutique

Behind the signature pink shopfront on the corner of Torquay Road is a genuinely gorgeous space. Soft pink throughout, a beautiful flower tree arching over the bridal mirrors, comfortable seating for the bride and up to five of her favourite people, and air conditioning for those glorious summer appointments.

Three guests tends to be the sweet spot — enough opinions to feel wonderfully supported, without it ever tipping into overwhelming. But every bride and her tribe is different, and PSB will happily shape the day around whatever works best. Drinks and snacks always on offer.

Because the boutique is appointment-only, each bride and her party have the whole place entirely to themselves. No sharing, no rushing, no hurrying anyone along.

The appointment

Two beautiful hours, and Amy hosts every single one of them personally.

It starts sitting down together with a drink, talking properly about the wedding, the day being planned, and everything a bride is hoping for from her dress. Some brides arrive knowing exactly what they want. Plenty arrive with absolutely no idea at all — and that is one hundred per cent fine. Amy will pull a gorgeous spread of styles and shapes so she can see what truly suits her, and go from there. Her wishlist and PSB's expertise, working together.

From that moment on, everything is tailored to the bride in front of them. For brides who want to soak up every glorious second of this — they're right there with them, and it will be a joyful, memorable day they'll never forget. For brides who'd rather skip the fuss — kindly honest, genuinely helpful, no hype. And for brides who arrive anxious — supported, reassured, and gently talked through it until those nerves melt clean away.

What brides talk about long afterwards is the expertise. Honest styling advice, and a real understanding of what can be customised and altered to make a dress unmistakably theirs. That dress will be worn for thirteen hours or more. It has to look and feel absolutely incredible all day long, not just for the first photograph. That's what makes a bride feel one in a million.

The dresses

The collection is romantic, diverse and beautifully fashion-forward — hand-picked gowns from some of the most respected names in bridal, including Madi Lane, Serene by Madi Lane, Millie May, Millie Grace and White Rose Graceful.

Super-detailed or stunningly simple and striking. Traditional or wonderfully quirky. There is something here for everyone. Gowns are available made to order, with designer-level customisations for brides who shop early. There is also an off-the-rail collection for anyone working to a shorter timeline.

Samples in every size, 6 to 36

This is the part Pretty Smithy Bridal cares about most. Every bride deserves to try gowns on in her own size — so the boutique holds samples in every single size from 6 to 36, plus a dedicated curvy showroom collection in sizes 18 to 36 from Millie Grace and White Rose Graceful, labels designed properly for curvy brides rather than graded up from a smaller pattern.

Which means whatever size a bride is, she'll be trying gowns on properly, in her own size range, seeing exactly how that designer fits and how a dress is truly meant to sit. Everyone has a dress out there that is just right for them, no matter the size on the label.

Finding the boutique

PSB warmly welcomes brides from all across South Devon and beyond — Torquay, Brixham, Newton Abbot, Exeter, Plymouth, Barnstaple and Cornwall — and, more and more often, brides making the journey down from Bristol and further afield. An easy run from the A380, with a long-stay Pay & Display car park directly behind the boutique on Hyde Road.

Weekend appointments do book up quickly, so it's well worth getting in early.
