29 Aug, 2026Our Real Wedding
Garry and I got together 16 years ago, after meeting at work a few years before. We have 2 beautiful boys, a dog, a cat, a snake and a cosy home in Hertfordshire.
He proposed to me after the fireworks on New Year's Eve/Day 2024/25, and we decided to get married on 29/08/26, as the 29th of August is our anniversary date, and it fell on a Saturday this year, so it was perfect. So our wedding day is actually also our 16th anniversary.
As it was a summer wedding, we decided on a 'wildflower' theme, with sage green as a base, and I tried to DIY as much of the wedding as possible. We are both quite laid back, so didn't want formal suits for the boys and groom... and opted for a more rustic look, with waistcoats to go with the theme.
Most of the décor was put together/coordinated by me... I sanded and hand painted pallets for signs, ordered vinyl lettering and hand painted our welcome mirror, designed all the stationery myself on Canva and had that printed, made all the bouquets, buttonholes and aisle decorations with faux flowers, made my own favours (using the M&S biscuits), ordered a lot of stuff second hand off marketplace and then the table flowers were bought fresh just from the shops and put together in bud vases/jam jars by my cousins. I felt very proud on the day that it all came together perfectly. And everyone loved all the little touches - we had wedding papers, fans, glow sticks (big hit), flip flops (you don't need loads but they did get used!), peg game, which the kids loved, face gems and tattoos for the kids... the only thing that wasn't on our side on the day was the weather.

So an outside ceremony was always on the cards. We had a bouncy castle planned for the kids, lawn games prepared and visions of us all being out there enjoying the summer vibes, but the English weather had other plans. Our venue was so amazing and quickly offered us an alternative solution indoors. The bouncy castle lady provided other soft play options for the kids and a balloon dome, which the venue allowed us to set up in a separate room, and honestly, hardly anyone noticed anything different!
I made the cake myself - just a simple vanilla sponge, and the first dance we shared with our sons, as we wanted to include them, so we chose 'Sunflower' from Spiderman as it's a family favourite for us.
My favourite moment of the day was just having all our favourite people there with us, and most importantly, my dad made it over from South Africa to walk me down the aisle! He has suffered some ill health over the past few months, and at one point, we didn't think the Drs would allow him to fly! So having him and my stepmom with us was fantastic.
I wish we could do it all again...
