James is a British Army Pipe-Major qualified piper, highly experienced in performing at prestigious and high-profile engagements for VIP audiences, both as a soloist and as part of an ensemble. His military career has also seen him take on leadership roles within his Battalion’s Pipes Platoon, where he is actively involved in teaching, mentoring, and developing pipers to a high professional standard.

James has participated in a wide range of state ceremonial events, including the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and the Palace of Holyrood Palace; Trooping the Colour; Beating the Retreat on Horse Guards Parade; VE Day commemorations; and numerous other ceremonial duties. He was honoured to perform as part of the massed Pipes and Drums at the funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II and the Coronation of HRH King Charles III, serving as acting Pipe Sergeant for the Pipes of the 1st Battalion Irish Guards. His appearances also include the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo (2023 and 2024), the Carrickfergus Tattoo, and the National Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph.

Equally at ease leading mini bands or performing solo, James has extensive experience playing for audiences of all sizes—from intimate private gatherings to crowds of over 8,000, including his selection as a Lone Piper at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2024.
Alongside performance, James is an accomplished competitive piper. Having received tuition from some of the British Army’s most respected pipers, he has won numerous prizes across England, with his greatest achievement to date becoming Army Senior Piobaireachd Champion in 2024.

James has performed internationally throughout Europe, Africa, Central America, and the Middle East, with particularly memorable experiences teaching military pipers in Egypt and Jordan, and performing at the royal wedding of Archduke Alexander de Habsbourg-Lorraine and Natacha Roumiantzoff at the Château de Belœil in Belgium. He is also experienced in televised and media performances.
