What Does A Wedding Celebrant Do?

A celebrant can help you to craft a bespoke, meaningful wedding ceremony for you and your partner. Unlike a civil ceremony, it can contain religious or spiritual content, but it is not legally binding. You can complete the legal part by having a prior civil ceremony with a registrar, or you can make an appointment to sign the marriage documents at the registry office. A celebrant-led ceremony alone is not enough to legally marry you. However, many couples opt to have a celebrant-led ceremony along with their legal one, as it can be personalized however they want. It can also be held anywhere, whereas not all venues hold a civil ceremony licence.

What Should I Look For In A Wedding Celebrant?

Your wedding celebrant should be willing to work with you to tailor-make your perfect ceremony. They will get to know you, suggest meaningful touches to add to the ceremony, but ultimately let you take the reins. On the practical side, look for someone who only books one wedding per day, so you can have their full attention. Also make sure to ask what will happen if they're sick or can't make it on the day. Some celebrants work as part of a group, so they should have someone to replace them if this happens.
