We hired two kilts to attend a wedding in Aberdeen. We were away on business prior to the wedding and would need to fly in to attend. Thankfully, A1 Kilt Hire offers a mail order service which sounded great. The kilts were delivered to a friends address and arrived on the correct day. My friend unpacked the kilts which arrived in plastic boxes and the clothing was rolled up like a fish supper. One of the kilt jackets was softer wool than other and was extremely creased, it also had a very very strong fragrance of men’s fragrance. It was very obvious it had not been cleaned since the last hire. On speaking to A1 about it I was advised it was not fragrance, but the smell of the cleaning product. If that were the case the second jacket could not have been cleaned as it had no smell. They did not answer which one was dirty. However, I was able to help them out as the one with the strong smell of fragrance also had a paper hotel key card from what I assume must have been the previous wearer. My friend had the jacket steamed several times to get the creases out and to make it wearable.
On the day of the wedding we arrived a few hours early and our kilts were in our rooms ready for us. You could still smell the fragrance from one of the jackets 3 days after delivery and multiple steams.
A1 Kilt hire require to buy your own shirts or provide them at a cost of £17.50. We were measured and purchased two a 17.5’ collar and a 16’ collar.
On getting dressed for the wedding the first issue we discovered was a large chip on the chrome section of the sporran, you hire these things to look smart, a large chip is completely unacceptable. Secondly was the sock, one of them had a hole half way up the leg about 8mm wide. Then the biggest disaster, both shirts were the completely wrong size. They sent a 19.5 and 14.5 which was no where near the required sizes.
So you get the picture, we hired kilts to look smart, but thanks to A1 Kilt Hires very low standards and bad attention to detail we now had a shirt which could only fasten at the second top bottom and the rest hidden in the waistcoat with all the buttons open and a large tie knot to try and hide the fact the top button could not be fastened. Put that together with the chipped sporran and a hole in the sock I would say it was a million miles from being A1.
We complained to A1 kilt hire and got the cost of the shirts refunded, we returned them so guess they had too and the cost of the unwashed jacket. But to top it all they kindly offered us 25% off next time we hire. This clearly demonstrates they have no idea about customer care. After that fiasco do they really think we would ever return!
With exception to the issues I have highlighted all the other parts of the outfit were old and tired. The shoes were down at the heels and looked very old and worn. They do not supply kilt pins which is unbelievable.
I would strongly suggest anyone looking to hire a kilt and to look smart on their chosen occasion to give this company a huge swerve as clearly from our experience, quality and customer care is way down the list.

We hired 6 kilts for our wedding and from the moment we walked in they were great, made sure we knew everything we needed to know and even when we had an emergency and my husband's kilt was too tight they were able to fix the problems straight away and the price was fantastic I would recommend them to anyone looking to hire a kilt
