Our Real Wedding
Our story began high above the Amalfi Coast on the Path of the Gods in Italy. George insisted we get up before sunrise to beat the crowds and, rather unusually, reminded me to "put my eyebrows on" before we left. At the time, I thought he was being ridiculous. I wasn't thrilled about doing my makeup at 5 am. But he knew I'd want them in the photos, and he was absolutely right. We reached a quiet viewpoint overlooking the dramatic coastline, where he got down on one knee. I was completely shocked. It was one of the happiest moments of my life, although my fingers had swollen so much from the hike that my engagement ring wouldn't fit until a few hours later.
As a Norwegian marrying a Scot, we wanted to celebrate both cultures. While our wedding naturally had a wonderfully Scottish feel, many of our Norwegian guests wore traditional bunads alongside the Scottish kilts. Seeing the two national outfits together was incredibly special, and our other guests embraced the spring celebration with bright, colourful outfits that perfectly suited the setting.
Continue reading »Flowers were one of the most important design elements for us. We wanted them to feel natural, seasonal, and as local as possible, so Chloe at Coohill Studios created the most beautiful meadow-inspired arrangements using locally grown flowers. She transformed the Stag Ballroom with colourful floral displays, while my bouquet and the bridesmaids' bouquets all complemented each other with slightly different colour palettes. The venue itself is so spectacular that we kept the décor minimal, letting the flowers and the incredible Victorian interiors do the talking.
Our cake might have been the most fun part to plan. George and I held a drawing competition to design it, and his sketch won. LilyRoseCakes brought it to life with incredible detail, featuring our two dogs, our boat, fishing, fish and Norwegian fjords - a perfect reflection of us.
The highlight of the entire weekend was undoubtedly the ceilidh. We expected our Norwegian guests to hang back at first, but they were the first on the dance floor and danced every single set. By the end of the night, they were joking about starting a petition to make ceilidhs compulsory at every Norwegian wedding! Looking around the room and seeing everyone laughing, dancing and celebrating together at Mar Lodge was everything we had dreamed of. It truly was the most magical weekend of our lives.
