How long does fruit cake last?

Purple Pixie, 31 of October of 2008 at 18:54 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

I made a christmas cake last November but due to illness I never got round to icing it and therefore we never ate it. It's been in an airtight container since then and I know people keep top tiers of wedding cakes for years, but will it really be ok to ice in a few weeks and have for this Christmas?

Did it have booze in it? The alcohol will help with the keeping.

And where has it been stored? Somewhere nice and cool, it should be fine. Somewhere warm (ie the kitchen), you might not be so lucky.

If it's a rich fruit cake the sugar content will mean that no self-respecting bacterium or mould would touch it so it'll be fine indefinitely. You'll spot if it's not OK as it'll be mouldy. Good idea to feed it with some brandy in the mean time.

I've sniffed it but I'm not keen on fruit cake any way so I can't tell whether it smells nice or not ?

It was kept in the kitchen but well away from the oven and stuff as it was a long, thin kitchen. It was probably the coolest place in the house.

Lots of brandy in it and I'm certainly not adverse to putting some more in.

    Thanks everyone.
