"Romance is in our nature": romantic is the very essence of Castello di Spessa in Capriva del Friuli, which, with its unmistakable silhouette, stands atop a small hill in the heart of the Collio area of Gorizia, a land of great wines and ancient history. Nestled in the greenery of a magnificent Italian garden, surrounded by the vineyards of the estate that gives it its name, the medieval castle was for centuries the home of the nobles of Friuli and Trieste. Among its illustrious guests (from Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart's celebrated librettist, to Emanuele Filiberto d'Aosta) was Giacomo Casanova, who—hosted by the then-owner Count Luigi Torriani—found refuge and tranquility here, allowing him to write and greatly appreciate its wines, which he described in his memoirs as "of excellent quality." A succession of noble lords and illustrious figures have shaped the castle's history and vocation for hospitality. Today, it is the heart of an elegant Golf Wine Resort & SPA, created by the current owners, the Pali family. An icon of refined Italian-style hospitality, the resort is among the most renowned and appreciated symbols of the bon vivre and hospitality of Friuli Venezia Giulia, a borderland where the Latin, Slavic, and Germanic worlds met and intertwined in an extraordinary melting pot. All around are the vineyards of the winery, which produces fine Collio and Isonzo DOC wines, and the 18-hole golf course, whose layout intertwines with the vineyards. In the castle's basement, you can visit the cellars, where the wines produced by the eponymous winery, famous since the 13th century, are aged. These are the oldest and most scenic in the Collio area, and are spread across two levels: the upper level dates back to the Middle Ages, while the lower level, 18 meters underground, is a military bunker built in 1939, ideally suited to storing the barriques due to its temperature and humidity. Upon reservation, you can enjoy a tasting of the estate's wines combined with a guided tour of the cellar, while at the foot of the castle, you can enjoy some delicacies in the elegant gourmet restaurant "La Tavernetta al Castello." The former stables now house the Vinum SPA: 2,000 square meters of wellness with a sauna, jacuzzi, massages, beauty treatments, and much more. The heart of the spa is vinotherapy, using the estate's grapes and wines. The Casanova Wine Shop sells the estate's wines, grappas, spirits, and honey, as well as a selection of local delicacies.
