07 Dec, 2024Our Real Wedding
We booked our wedding in August 2022 and we were all prepared staying at the venue the night before to make a relaxed and stress free wedding day. We had a lovely meal the night before with some family to celebrate the grooms birthday, it was a lovely calm before the storm.
The day of our wedding we were hit by Storm Darragh, making the room we were using for our ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening reception unusable. This was particularly disappointing considering our venue decorators had already set up the night before and were just going to do final touches on the day, they had put so much work so it looked perfect. Part way through getting ready with my bridal party in our matching pjs and a few proseccos I was told about this and asked what I wanted to do, obviously my answer was we can figure it out as long as we get married.
We quickly came up with a plan B and with the wonderful help of our family, friends and vendors we managed to swap the rooms round. It really did show its who you've got round you that matters. Even with all of the chaos we still had a lovely time getting ready.

Our ceremony was a lot more intimate in a much smaller room, with alot of our guests having to stay standing. The smaller room meant there wasn't much of an aisle but we made this work.
After the bridal party I walked down the aisle to fairytale of new york on piano and got a few tears from my groom. We had a short ceremony by the registrar, and just personalised it by adding 2 readings. Our first reading by my brother was toy storys you've got a friend in me, which our amazing pianist played backing music for. As a huge friends fan, our second reading by one of the best men was from friends, Joey Tribiani's speech for officiating Monica and Chandlers wedding, again accompanied by the friend theme on piano. We kept this a secret with only 5 of us knowing this, the relief when we heard laughs of people realising what it was, which was followed by me shouting yes so happy my sister and others got it, unconventional but perfect for us.
We had a magician to entertain guests during the drinks reception, he wondered round doing tricks for everyone. We still get comments from guests about how he did some of the tricks. With the storm, we were worried the reindeer we hired for a few hours were not going to be able to make it, but sure enough, Blitzen and Dancer, accompanied by 2 handlers, made an appearance for our guests. The thought of reindeer was originally a joke, but I actually realised that it would be a magical touch for our winter wedding. Although, we did get told off by our niece for rudolph not being there.
There were a lot of laughs and even some tears during speeches. The brides speech obviously had to including making sure everyone knew my wedding dress had pockets. Our first dance to a slow version of Cheerleader was accompanied by confetti cannons, which was magical.
We had a sweetcart, photobooth, arcade machine and an telephone guestbook to entertain as well as foam glow sticks for dancing the night away.
As if our day hadn't been crazy enough, we even had some wedding crashers. The venue was hosting a part night, which was quietening down earlier than planned, they heard our party and ask could they crash, which of course we let them, the more the merrier.
We weren't expecting to be dancing the night away with strangers at our wedding, but they just mingled with guests, and we had a ball. Even leaving a message on our guestbook. We now realise no matter how much planning and organisation, things don't always go to plan, but you can still make the most of it. Also, maybe read the fine print on the old wives' tale of burying a sausage on the venue grounds to get no rain because, in my experience, it turns out burying a packet of 6 sausages means a storm is heading your way.
We take pride in being told we were the perfect couple for this to happen to because we handled it so well. If you ask us how our wedding went we would describe it as perfectly chaotic.
