25 Sep, 2026Our Real Wedding
Chris and I had been dating for two years before getting engaged. We had known from the start that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together, and being middle aged, we didnt want to waste time. A beautiful day shared with close family and friends. Chris and I married at Hazel Gap Barn. An amazing venue set amongst woodland. I had the pleasure of driving past this venue on my daily travels. I had watched it being renovated from a disused Barn to the wonderful wedding venue it is today. It had to be this venue for us and from the moment we first stepped into it, we knew it was right. We married at 1:30pm by Nottinghamshire registrars who made us feel at ease, the minute they spoke. We had friends sing our ceremony song Elvis - Can't help falling in love, which bought a tear to everyone's eyes. My bouquet had our Scottish clan tartan ribbon tied round and it complimented the wedding suits and bridesmaids dresses beautifully. After the ceremony we toasted with prosseco, beer and canapés. We then had a moment to ourselves as we we were driven about in our wedding car, whilst drinking champagne. Everything went to plan and even the predicted rain didn't happen, which meant we could have photos outside and also have the firepits lit in the evening as planned. The wedding breakfast was lovely. Everyone commented how good the food was and how plentiful. The speeches were humouring, mainly of my husbands golf skills, or lack of! The bridesmaids and groomsman were handed their gifts and with good cheer and full stomachs, we headed to the dance floor for the disco. While guests were enjoying the disco tunes or relaxing in the bar, my husband and I decided to practice our first dance in the bridal room. We were then announced onto the floor for cake cutting and our first dance of Bryan Adams - Everything I do. It had to be this as Hazel Gap is on the outskirts of Sherwood Forest and the legend of Robin Hood. It was also very fitting of our relationship as we both always think of each other first before ourselves. I was amazed at how well it went as we had been more nervous about this than tying the knot! Our wonderful photographers videoed it and we can't wait to see the final version. The cake was served together with marshmallows available for toasting on the firepits outside and as we greeted the evening guests we hadn't seen yet, people commented how lovely the venue was and how they could enjoy different areas and do different things ie toast marshmallows, dance on the dance floor or sit and chat in the bar area. Some of our guests were singers and the disco accommodated them with karaoke tracks. This made our evening even more special. We danced and mingled, drank more prosecco and sadly the day came to an end as guests started to depart. It was 1am and it had passed by so quickly, we couldn't believe how fast it had gone. We made our way to our taxi, hand in hand, the harvest moon shining down on us, feeling elated and so in love...the rest of our lives ahead of us as Mr and Mrs Colquhoun (pron. ka - hoon).
