29 Mar, 2025Our Real Wedding
We got engaged at Christmas 2023, we'd been together for 1o years and we'd talked about getting married, but had just never done it. Al insisted we go on a dog walk to a beautiful place in the town where we live, and in true style, I was in my PJs and wellies, talking about how we were going to be late. He had already been up for hours and was nicely dressed. He got down on one knee in the drizzle and the wind, of course, I said yes. The dogs were also thrilled!
We got planning straight away and booked Pennard House in January, we knew we wanted to get married there as soon as we left the visit, we didn't;t actually look anywhere else.
It has a lovely vibe, and the team was amazing. It is a country house, but it isn't huge, very much a home-from-home feeling. The grounds and the house are absolutely stunning and there was space for all our friends and family. We knew we were going to have quite a big wedding because we are so lucky to have a large group of friends and we wanted them all to be with us.
Continue reading »We didn't have a theme as such, but we wanted lots of colour, greenery, and I love all things stars, so fairy lights and stars were part of the decor too, think enchanted forest.
Adding personal touches was really important for us. I make paper flowers, so I made all the bouquets, button holes, and flowers for tables and decor. Doing this meant we could have the colours and flowers that we wanted and we could have more than our budget would have allowed if we had had real flowers. We had Foxgloves, Anemones, Roses, Crocus, Dhalias, Peonies, Apple Blossom, Carnations and Iris. They were in pinks, blues, purples and yellows with greenery mixed in. To choose the flowers, I asked my bridal party what their favourite flowers and colours were, so their bouquets matched their choices, and I tied them with a ribbon in their favourite colour. I also used everyone's birth flowers. For the tables, we had antique copper pots with flowers and greenery; the flowers were also our wedding favours, so everyone could take a bunch home with them.
We had two boxes that belonged to our grandfathers filled with flowers as our aisle flowers, and they then moved to the reception venue after the ceremony. We added stars to fairy lights over the dance floor for the evening to give the feel of a starry night sky.
I got my dress from Wed2B, and it was exactly the opposite of what I thought I wanted. It was a mermaid dress with lace and sequins, it ended up being the most beautiful thing I've ever worn. In the evening, I changed into a Coast Wedding Dress with big sleeves and sequin starburst detail, so I could dance! My bridal party chose their own outfits, all in shades of purple. The ladies wore beautiful dresses, and the men wore amazing suits that they had made themselves. Everyone looked stunning and was comfortable, which was something really important for me. I love how all the shades look in the pictures, too. I also had one of my friends as my something blue, and she walked down the aisle with us, too, which was really special. Our wedding was child-free, because we have a lot of friends with wonderful children, but it would have really increased the guest list. We did have our niece and nephew with us, though, as our flower girl and boy.
The groomsmen wore stone coloured suits and coloured trainers to add another pop of colour.
My headdress was a bow made from my Mum's wedding dress sash (my something old), which I embroidered our names, wedding date, and the birth flowers of our bridal party and family. I didn't want a veil as it isn't my style, but this was a lovely way to include my mum in my outfit and add another personal item to the day.
I made gifts for the bridal party and groomsmen. I made personalised glasses with their names, our birth flowers, and their favourite flowers, so it matched the florals. I also made them a Bridesmaids essentials bag with the same design as the glasses, along with robes with their initials and flowers. I wanted to make them all feel special on the day and have something to keep afterwards.
I also had a handkerchief made for Al with a message from them on it, which I gave him at the end of the aisle, because I knew he would cry. This really broke the tension and made everyone laugh, which is what I wanted. I knew he would be feeling nervous being the centre of attention. We are not overly serious people, and our ceremony was full of laughter,r which made it even more special.
Our cake was made by Al, it was a Victoria sponge, and we surrounded it with more flowers and greenery. My sister and mum also made other cakes to be served with the evening food, so we covered everyone's dietary and flavour preferences.
I also designed all our stationery and signage, so it all matched, and I foiled them to give them a bit of extra sparkle.
For our guest book, we asked our guests to take a Polaroid picture and write a message, which was a great way to make sure we have a photo of them all. It was so lovely to see all the photos they took.
Our favourite part of the day was being surrounded by everyone we love. There was not anyone there we didn't know and love. It meant that the whole day felt joyous and there was no time spent having awkward conversations and every memory is a special one.
Although it was a lot of work to out together making so much of it myself, it made the day feel extra special, even if only we knew some of the details. We made the day exactly what we wanted and sharing it with everyone was an absolute dream.
