    Our amazing wedding day

Our experience at Dunchurch Park began with an initial enquiry with Sarah in the wedding office. Sarah was very welcoming and we immediately warmed to her as she gave us all the information needed without any hassle or pushiness. Sarah left for maternity leave and our enquiry was passed to Zoe, who was equally as helpful, informative and punctual with the planning of our day. We chose to have our wedding in the Great Hall which is a charming room of the old house, but there are lots of other parts of the ground that were available such as the Marquee and Garden Rooms.

A few months before the wedding we were invited to a menu tasting where we could choose what we wanted. The chef was superb and gave us some fabulous food which was actually quite difficult to choose between! The wine was also extremely nice and the service from Evelina was brilliant. We were kept up to date with the hotel's suppliers and Zoe herself as to where they were with planning, timings, room allocations etc. They took so much stress away from us which we are extremely thankful for!

On the day we had Amine as our master of ceremony. He truly made our day with the way he conducted himself, organised the catering staff and general management of the event. The chef also came out to make sure that everything was perfect for us. We were made to feel like family! The bar staff were helpful, the catering staff where brilliant and our rooms was clean, large and nice and quiet. We chose to have the hotel's DJ of choice who was superb in getting people dancing, etc.

Every single person who came to our wedding has mentioned how lovely everything was from the hotel, staff, location, food and drink. Our thanks must also go to the general manager, Stuart for all of his help too.

    Thank you, Dunchurch Park Hotel!

    Avoid

Avoid large wedding here – logistical nightmare which DP could not deliver.
Small wedding is probably fine, but if you want a large bespoke wedding, do not waste your special day!

    SUMMARY

I have taken some time to go into our wedding day in a bit more depth than what the title suggests, so that you can see what you're getting with DP with a larger bespoke wedding which we had. I hope you find this information of use when deciding your wedding venue.

This is not the ramblings of someone who had a bad wedding at DP, as that is not the case. We enjoyed our special day and had perfect weather, so we could enjoy the beautiful grounds that DP has to offer.

The purpose of this review is to help out other couples looking at DP, so that they can decide if they want to avoid the same problems that we encountered. I hope the below is balanced and helps you.

I have written this review over a month after the wedding, so that the dust can settle and I can deliver an objective review.

    BACKGROUND

We got married at Dunchurch Park ''DP'' on 1 Sep 2018.

DP is a beautiful venue to get married at, if you get the weather right, which we did. The Gardens certainly have a wow factor to impress your guests and generally the building inside is impressive and grand, with the odd few issues one would expect with a dated building.

The rooms for guests are slightly dated but comfortable. Our guests experienced overflowing drains in the morning in the car park, so if you don’t mind that, you are golden (pardon the pun)! The bridal room also had a wasps nest outside of it, which we didn’t know about until the morning of the wedding, despite a humorous sign on the bridal changing window saying ''do not open window as bees are busy working''. Wasps were seen, but no bumblebees!

When we booked DP back in Jan 2018, we opted for small civil wedding (185 guests) in Mawson's marquee. Around March 2018, we changed our package to a large Asian wedding (300-350 guests).

Typically Asian Weddings at DP are done by Divya, who are not connected to DP. DP rightfully would not allow us to cancel the contract with them and switch to Divya. This is of course fair enough, as we signed a contract with DP and not Divya, so no issue there. That being said, ultimately DP had us by the short and curlys as for my error in signing a contract with them and not Divya.

DP, to their credit showed flexibility with pricing and seemed like they genuinely wanted to hold the Asian wedding to fulfil our needs. I am not sure if this is because of the attractive amount of money an Asian wedding brings in to a venue, but the fact remains, they were flexible for which we are grateful. DP brought in external Asian chefs to meet our needs, which was very kind of them.

    RUN UP TO WEDDING

Our wedding planner went off on maternity leave around February 2018. This of course cannot be avoided and is fair enough. No issue there. The original planner seemed very well organised to her credit and was a pleasure to deal with. She was temporarily replaced with 2 part time wedding planners who split the working week between them.

Planning a wedding with these 2 new planners was a nightmare and did not fill us with confidence for 1 Sep 2018. To say the right hand did not know what the left hand was doing is an accurate comment. They meant well and were decent young ladies, but to me, did not seem competent in anyway shape or form.
As our fist port of contact, these 2 wedding planner would often have to speak with one another when liaising with them and they mislead us on numerous issues which I shall not bore you with however a good example is them booking rooms under the wrong persons name and not knowing how many rooms were left. It is the little things like that you don’t need the bother with in the run up to a wedding.

We planned many small details to make our wedding special and this was something DP could not deliver in terms of set up.

    WEDDING DAY AND NIGHT BEFORE

We did not get the keys to decorate the marquee for our wedding until 8am that day as the marquee was booked out the day before. That is fair enough, but we found this out a couple of weeks before 1 Sep 2018.

We left a handover note and labelled boxes on the Friday. These were left unsecured for 2 hours on Friday despite reassurances the room would be a 'safe room'. Fortunately nobody half inches our champagne and wine!

    WEDDING DAY

We encountered numerous issues on our wedding day, which made us stressed on our special day. This included

    1. Not having enough chairs in the ceremony room, so alternative chairs and covers were used

    2. Getting into the marquee 1 hour later than the scheduled time because DP had not prepped it, which meant family / guests had to help;

    3. Leaving the evening sweet cart exposed in the marquee despite asking DP in advance to cover it up in the day

    4. Not enough canapés were served despite being assured 3 per person would be.

    5. Food was not brought out promptly and some people got their main meals 10 mins after others got theirs

    6. We brought numerous items to make the marquee special and to make it ''our wedding''. Many of these items were not put out or went walkies….

    7. Table numbers were not done by DP and this had to be rectified on the day!

    8. Despite our requests, staff did not cover our evening cheese overnight and left it exposed in the fridge

    9. The MC did not take control of our day and did not keep us updated on what was happening. We often had to look around to see what was next on the schedule !

    10. The General Manager informed me he would be present during the day to make sure everything was going smoothly. I bumped into him once in a side corridor by the kitchen and later at 1am in the morning when I went to the bar to get a water. I didn’t see the GM at any point during the day despite his assurances.

    POSITIVES

As I have said above, the grounds at DP are enviable. The food was cooked to perfection, albeit served late and DP fully investigated the issues raised after our wedding, however essentially denied liability for all issues and didn’t even acknowledge some of their basic errors. Sometimes the word sorry goes along way, but you will not get that with DP.

    CONCLUSION

As detailed above, we planned numerous small details to make our wedding special and DP just could not and did not deliver on it. I reasonably believe that if you are doing a very simple / small civil wedding for sub 150 guests, with very few personal touches, you will be fine. I believe DP can deliver what I would call a basic/small wedding.

However, if you seek a larger / more personalised wedding, I would advise you to avoid DP as you will regret it. You are better off investing your money and your special day at an alternative venue.

Thank you to everyone at Dunchurch Park who made the day as perfect as we imagined. Sarah/Zoe were amazing in the planning. Amine was the best master of ceremonies that we could have asked for. Thank you to Stuart for all his help too. Amazing experience and we can't wait to come back for our anniversary stay.

The Billiard room & Drawing room provide the perfect setting for a small wedding - lovely old country house feel with stunning views in a glorious setting. All our guests made very positive comments about our choice of location. Amine (MOC) was really lovely, warm friendly, helpful & supportive & there in the background with our imposing himself. Food was very tasty & although there was some waste i am glad we ordered more than suggested.

Avoid large wedding here logistical nightmare

If you are seeking a small civil wedding (ie 150 guests) with very few personal touches then DP can probably deliver the service they advertise. We had a larger wedding (320 guests) with lots of personal touches which DP could not deliver.
We had numerous logistical issues with DP on the day and poor management and the failure to hold their word really left us sad with the venue. I would encourage you to avoid DP for a larger stylistic wedding as the wedding management is terrible.

On the plus side, the food is fantastic and the grounds are perfect.

So much went wrong logistically I cannot say in 300 words, but really , please avoid. I wish someone told us the above before we booked

The Hotel, venue, staff - Just everything is amazing. We had the best day ever. Crazy Horses (DJ) did a fantastic job. As did Rainbows (Décor) & Mel with the flowers. The Marquee looked out of the world. Everyone is still taking about it and we wish we could do it all over again. Luan & Anna xx

We couldn't have asked for a more friendly or professional service. Everyone we spoke to knew exactly what they were doing, and made the day run smoothly & stress free. Compared to other wedding venues we viewed, the value for money at D.P is excellent, without compromise on quality . Would highly recommend! Thank you x
