“I couldn’t think of anything perfect enough to describe just how much I love you” – Maid of Honour Speech by Dannii

"Do you really think Kat would allow the best man to give a speech about Mat and not have one about her?"

Speech Type: Maid of Honour
Time to Read Aloud:
5 minutes
Our Favourite Line: “There are no words big enough to define the kind of sister you are to me and I certainly had no idea how to summarise everything I wanted to say to make it all fit onto one page.”

Hi, for those who don’t know me I’m Dannii, Kat’s sister and her maid of honour. Some of you may wonder, why the maid of honour has a speech, well do you really think Kat would allow the best man to give a speech about Mat, and not have one about her?

Kat, you look absolutely breathtaking today. Mat can vouch for this as he looks absolutely breath taken by you. You guys really are a beautiful couple.

People may expect me to reveal tales of Kat and her wild ways. In fact, she has on several occasions warned me that if I do this, I’m in big trouble. So, unlike her Brighton hen-do, this time I’m following her advice. The build-up to the wedding has fuelled many outrageous stories, some totally inappropriate to mention, but some that are Nanna rated clean.

I can tell you, on Kat’s bridal party to Miami, we had a completely crazy time, hanging out in pool bars and drinking cocktails with the locals… I’m just not sure it was as wild as Mum and Marcia’s experience! Seeing them sneak off for another Mojito as they tried to ditch us again made me realise we’re more like Mum than we often admit. From Miami, we took home some amazing memories, but also, under the guidance of those two, we all (including Mum and Marcia) now have a Latino gang prison tattoo, to remind us of how fun it was. I would also like to mention, in Brighton on Hen-do number 2, Kat displayed her competitive side on the volleyball court, but her team in black, lost out to my team the yellows, in victory dance moves.

Kat, I want you to know that I wrote this next bit over and over. I couldn’t think of anything perfect enough to describe just how much I love you. There are no words big enough to define the kind of sister you are to me and I certainly had no idea how to summarise everything I wanted to say to make it all fit onto one page but I will say this…

Kat’s been an incredible sister to grow up with, she’s always generous and kind, for example, saving my life in the Lanzarote waves and lending me her clothes when I don’t know what to wear – not sure which one is more important. But also, it’s been so much fun growing up with you. I love hanging out with Kat, whether that be “working from home”, partying or by a netball court, and I hope we continue to do this when we are the same age as Aunt Maisie.

I remember the first time I met Mat, it was up in Birmingham. Mat, Chris, Kat and I went to this bar called Chii which had a hot tub, fancy! I remember Kat asking me what I thought of Mat as she was really keen on him. I said I thought he seemed nice. Chris has known Mat even longer than my 12 years so I’ll leave it to him to tell us stories of their ill-spent youth.

According to Google, I should now offer you both some advice on your marriage. I really don’t feel qualified for that, so instead, I’ll borrow some words from someone else which I think describes your current relationship and I hope you take this into your marriage.

Marriage is like the twin columns that stand apart, not leaning on another but giving love a firm foundation of freedom and trust. Marriage is having someone to share your dreams with, someone to live your life with, and someone to walk and talk with through the years. Someone who’ll stand beside you, someone whose hand will guide you through good and bad times, happiness or sorrow. A life of love together, a love that spans forever.

Please can everyone be upstanding for my beautiful sister and new brother-in-law as we raise a glass and wish them a happily ever after – to Kat and Mat.
