How to Make the Most of Your Honeymoon

Find out how you can make the most of your honeymoon, from travelling in style to enjoying luxurious pampering

Your honeymoon should be the most special holiday you’ll ever take. And if you upgrade the experience it could make your trip of a lifetime even more spectacular…

Travel in Style

You could kick-off your honeymoon in superb style by ordering a luxury car or limo to get you the airport. Companies like Cambridge Wedding Cars provide a luxury car service, complete with a smartly-dressed chauffeur, to make you feel really special.

Some couples say that when they produced their marriage certificates at the airport their flights were upgraded: but, if you’d rather not leave luxury to chance, call the airline at the time of booking and ask them about honeymoon upgrades. If you don’t want to splash your own cash, you could add flight upgrades and on-board champagne to your wedding gift list.

When you reach your destination, avoid the inconvenience of a standard resort transfer by hiring a luxury car, or booking a chauffeur-driven service ahead: in some countries you’ll find it’s relatively affordable to travel to your hotel in style.

Heaven in a Hotel

When booking accommodation, always have a peep at the honeymoon suite to see what you could experience: if you include honeymoon costs when planning your wedding budget, you’ll give yourselves time to save-up for somewhere really special to stay.

Honeymoon suites usually come with luxury features such as swimming pools, hot tubs, real log fires, four poster beds and butler or maid service. You’ll often enjoy complementary extras too, like VIP transfer from the airport, champagne and roses on arrival and late check out. Make sure you check at the time of booking to find out exactly what you’ll be getting and do negotiate with the hotel if you’re on a tight budget.

Even if you’re staying in modest accommodation, it’s worth asking about upgrades. You might find that a three star hotel on a beautiful beach doesn’t have a honeymoon suite, but offers a master bedroom with a priceless view for a few extra pounds. It can also be more affordable to do a DIY upgrade: stay in a nice, affordable hotel and then add a few extras upon arrival (have breakfast delivered to your room, book a spa treatment, etc) — you might find that there are special offers and discounted upgrades available at short notice.

And regardless of the type of accommodation you book, always tell the staff that you’re on your honeymoon: most good hotels will make you feel like you’ve upgraded your stay once they know you’re newlyweds.

Extra Special Excursions

Most hotels offer excursions, and there are usually romantic options too: booking an extravagant package will make your experience really special.

The excursion of a lifetime could be anything from star gazing on Mount Teide in Tenerife, with a bottle of bubbly to share, to a snowmobile excursion in Sweden. You could take a helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon (toasting your marriage with a glass of champagne on the Canyon floor), see the beauty and majesty of Venice from your own gondola or hire a honeymoon houseboat on Vembanad Lake in India with your own chef, butler and captain.

If you’re staying in Africa, book a honeymoon safari to spot “the big five” and spend the night in a romantic safari lodge, or take a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River above Victoria Falls.

And in the Caribbean, take a kayak tour, swim with dolphins, see the island you’re staying on from a yacht, or enjoy a secluded picnic on your own private beach.

Find out excursion costs before you travel so you can factor the expense into your honeymoon budget — it may be cheaper to contact the excursion operator direct, rather than booking through the hotel or travel agent.

Perfect Pampering

Whether or not you’re staying in a spa resort, booking a pamper-package during your honeymoon is a great way to upgrade.

Some spa resorts offer couples treatments, so you can have a massage side-by-side or enjoy some spa therapy together in the same private room. You could book to take a Turkish bath for two, relax in a Hammam steam room or try a Rasul ritual where you can apply different coloured medicinal mud to each other’s bodies.

If you’re staying at a spa resort, ask about in-room treatments too — then you won’t even have to get dressed to be pampered senseless!

Blowing the Budget

If the sky’s the limit, you could upgrade your entire honeymoon and choose one of the world’s most exclusive honeymoon packages.

Sir Richard Branson’s private hideaway, Necker Island, can be hired exclusively for your wedding and then you could honeymoon on the Necker Belle, a luxury catamaran with four beautiful ensuite cabins.

Hire the penthouse at the uber-romantic George V Hotel in Paris for an opulent honeymoon close to home and enjoy breathtaking views of the Eiffel Tower from a private terrace, take a dip in the infinity bath and lounge on the four poster day bed.

Or you could charter a crewed, private luxury yacht to explore the Maldives, a unique and exclusive way to enjoy the breathtaking Indian Ocean archipelago.
