If you want more choice over how you get married – then Spiritual Orkney (also known as Orkney Pagan Weddings) can help!
If you are a couple who are interested in getting fully legally married where you want, when you want, and how you want – then our services are for you! If you want a ritual that is spiritual, unique, beautiful and memorable – whether it is a fully legal Pagan handfasting, a simple but genuine ceremony, or a renewal of vows – then read on!
In Scotland you can get legally married where and when you want and, unlike in England and Wales, Scottish law permits wedding rituals performed by an approved Pagan celebrant to be treated as a legal marriage under the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1977.
So, why not get married in Orkney? Orkney is full of ancient sites which resonate with the power of the ancestors, enigmatic historic ruins, and some of the most stunning natural environments in the world. So you could make your vows at a stone circle, a beach by moonlight, or dappled woodland …
We are approved Scottish Pagan Federation celebrants and are available to assist you in making your wedding day what you want it to be: spiritual, unique, beautiful, memorable and fully legal. We also provide baby-namings, family Blessings, renewals of vows and all other rituals to mark key stages of life.
We will help you to get married how you want to – you can even write the ceremony yourselves (although we provide as much help as you need). You don’t have to call yourselves Pagan to use our services, in our experience, couples expressing a wish to have a marriage ceremony performed by us often don't identify themselves with any named religion, instead they may consider themselves to be more spiritual than religious, or to have an affinity with nature, or maybe just want something a bit different. Whatever the case, we should be able to help.
Possibly the most important point for people who do consider themselves to be Pagan, is that you do not need to have a civil ceremony at a registrar's office as well as a religious ceremony in order to legalise the marriage (as is still required in England and Wales). In Scotland the religious ceremony IS the legal ceremony (exactly as if you were getting married, for example, in a church).
At Spiritual Orkney, we can help with every stage of organising your wedding. We are approved Scottish Pagan Federation celebrants so we can advise you on the legal processes involved and we are based in Orkney so we can assist with suggesting and arranging a suitable venue.
We are available to discuss your ideas about the ritual YOU want and will do so in person, by email and telephone, so that together we design a ceremony that fits exactly to your specific requirements. We can perform a rehearsal, if required, but most vitally, we will conduct the actual wedding ritual on your special day.
We are both experienced in composing and performing different styles of ritual and ceremony, including ones from most of the major strands of modern Paganism as well as ones which combine themes for inter-faith couples and families. We can assist you in producing a ceremony that meets your exact and personal requirements.
Email us even if you would just like to make a general enquiry. Both this web-listing and our own web-site are for preliminary information to let you know that this service is available from us and to give you a brief overview of procedures BUT we fully appreciate that all weddings are personal and your wedding is special, so we will do the majority of communication with you individually and in person, either by email or by telephone - it's all part of our service!
Team of Spiritual Orkney
Partner in Spiritual Orkney
Together with my husband, Mark, I am one of the partners in Spiritual Orkney (Orkney Pagan Weddings are just one of the many services which we offer).
Mark and I named our partnership 'Spiritual Orkney' because that is the best description of everything which we offer, whether it be weddings, guiding, rituals, crafts, or just good company. All of the services which we provide are managed, created and performed by us, in person.
We live in West Mainland Orkney, within view of the World Heritage Site at Brodgar.
I am one of the Scottish Pagan Federation (SPF) Local Organisers for Orkney, and one of the SPF Interfaith Officers for Orkney; I am an active member of a local interfaith group. I am the Regional co-ordinator of the SPF for northern Scotland and an elected Officer of the SPF. In addition, we both facilitate open public rituals for the eight major Pagan festivals, all of which anyone with a warm heart and open mind are welcome to attend.
Mark and I are both approved celebrants for the SPF and we offer life rituals for the Pagan community whom we serve. We are two of only about a dozen Celebrants in Scotland holding a licence from National Records of Scotland to conduct legally binding Pagan wedding ceremonies.
We have both trained with and are members of The Fellowship of Professional Celebrants. Membership provides us with public liability insurance for our ceremonies.
We are both Scottish Tourist Guide Association Regional (Green) Badge Guides for Orkney. Membership provides us with public liability insurance for our guiding.
I am a qualified archaeologist and teacher, and a published author. I am Service Assured trained which states my commitment to delivering an excellent level of service (this training is recommended by Visit Scotland).
Mark and I are both active members of the Scottish Green Party; I am one of the co-convenors of the Orkney Greens.
As a requirement of our past and present employments, Mark and I have both had CRB and Disclosure Scotland tests carried out on us at enhanced level.
I look forward to helping you to welcoming you to Orkney and enhancing your visit to these beautiful islands.
