Mark used to play on the same football team as Sarah’s boyfriend when they were all teenagers, and they’d exchanged a few hellos and some polite conversation. When Sarah’s relationship ended, they lost touch until a few years later.
She messaged him on Facebook about a picture he’d posted and they got talking and arranged to go for a drink. Sarah didn’t realise it was a date, but they had so much in common so it soon developed!
Sadly, three weeks after they got together Sarah’s mum passed away. Mark helped her to get through it and became her rock. She realised how truly special he was when he took on so much so soon into their relationship.
After buying their dream home together in January 2013, the couple decided to only give each other small gifts for Valentine’s Day. She bought Mark a computer game, he got her a CD. Then when she was making dinner, he seemed flustered before getting down on one knee. She burst into tears and covered her face – causing Mark to later comment, ‘It’s a good job I wasn’t just tying my shoelace!’
He gave her a beautiful diamond ring which had the stones clustered together in the shape of a flower. It was nothing like what Sarah would have picked but it was completely perfect.
