WTF?? (lollipop lady related)

Bink, 8 of July of 2008 at 12:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Near to my house (also near a primary school) there is a pedestrian crossing - the type where you press the button and wait for the green man. But in the last week they now have a lollipop lady there as well. I can't see the point. She presses the button then when the green man is displayed she walks out into the road with her lollipop and everyone crosses. When the green man appears and the beeping is present, the traffic lights for the cars are red anyway so the cars are going to stop. Am I alone in thinking this is ridiculous?

They had this when I used to walk to work, I (and all the little kiddies) had to cross a BIG main road, with 2 'beepy' crossings. That used up 2 lollypop ladies for no real reason as the kids always had an adult with them. Outside the school there was one poor lollypop man who really struggled with the volume of kids he had to cross, he could have done with some help from one of the others!

I see this on my way to work too. The thing is the crossing is right outside the School and the School also has 2 ladies standing outside the gates every morning (they must be playground attendants). I've never really understood it.

It's the same here and all the kids are with an adult who could easily push the button...

I don't think it's ridiculous - her job is to escort primary school aged children across safely. She's using the pedestrian crossing to help her but younger children can't be relied on to use that kind of system and lots of drivers go straight through pedestrian crossings. I understand that they only put lollipop staff on crossings with high risk.

They used to have one outside my primary school. I think she was there mainly to make sure the children used the crossing properly and tell them off when they weren't.

I would presume it was because the children can't be relied on to wait at the side of the road. I guess in this day and age mosts parents will walk their children to school but by having the lollipop lady it means that the children could go on their own.
