Wedding Venue Deposit - too much? or normal...

RomanticIvoryCars23327, 10 of June of 2019 at 21:52 Posted on Planning 0 4

Hi everyone... very new to this so appreciate any advice in advance.

We are looking to book a date a year from now... the quote includes the venue and food for the day coming to £19k total.

The venue are looking for an initial deposit of £5,000 which seems pretty high to us, followed by another 7k in jan and the final 7k just before the wedding. (50% would be lost if cancelled >90 days before the wedding and 100% lost if cancelled within 90 days).

In regard to the deposit in particular... is this too high? What is a normal and reasonable deposit?

Would welcome your experiences and advice... many thanks in advance Smiley smile

I think it's all relative to the total amount - our venue costs came to just under £6k, and we paid a deposit of about £2k.

Your total is much higher than that, so it makes sense that the deposit would be higher. A lot of venues that I looked at asked for a 50% deposit.

Make sure you get a contract that is signed by both you and the venue, but I don't think that £5k of £19k is outrageous.

    Hope this helps! X

50% is known but usually its 10-20%. Yours is looking like 25% so not too over the top.

Some venues have increased their deposits of late as in the past 2 years they (and ourselves) have seen a much higher number of cancellations than in previous years. And, once you've gone past booking season it can be hard to fill the date.

It's always a good idea to have wedding insurance as this can cover the cost of deposits if the absolute worst can happen and I do belive wedding insurance is under £100. It covers many things although no money back if you get cold feet.

Our venue, food and drinks are £5700. Our deposit was £500 with the balance due four weeks before. So, just under a 10% deposit x
