Pancakes

Irisbride, 9 of February of 2013 at 19:14 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 37

It's Shrove Tuesday (aka Pancake day!) this week.

Will you be having pancakes?

What do you like on them?

We're having my parents, my brother and his gf over as thought it would be nice to do something as its our first year in our house. Trying to think of some original pancake fillings/toppings? I normally only have lemon and sugar, but thought it would be nice to have a few options? I've heard of people having chocolate spread, maple syrup, banana. Any other inspiring ideas?

Now everyone thinks I am a bit odd but when I was a little girl i diddnt like lemon juice on my pancakes so my parents put orange juice on them. 30 years later, I cant eat pancakes unless they are smothered in orange juice and sugar. They just don't tatses right

I cook ours with a mince dish in them. I can remember having them at school 30 years ago and really enjoy it still. The kids don't like pancakes unfortunately? I'll force them to eat them anyway!

Nutella +/- banana, lemon and sugar, strawberry jam and whipped cream, stewed apple +/- cream are my favourites.

Every year we go all oit and have a pancake feast for dinner. This year we are trying to be healthy-ish so will mainly consist of fruit, I have on my shopping list:

    Bananas

    Strawberries

    Raspberries

    Blackberries

    Currants

Any other fruit that I see that takes my fancy (Missrae would be proud ?)

We will also have lemon, sugar, and maple syrup on the table.

Other years have included cream, homemade chocolate sauce and caramel sauce, caramelised fruit, nutella, chopped nuts.

We make crepe type pancakes which I've always thought of as being the more British style, as opposed to the americanised sweet smaller ones that are puffy.

We love pancakes and will definitely be making some. I love savoury ones, I have made mushrooms and broccoli in a stilton sauce wrapped in wholewheat pancakes and baked followed by sweet ones, usually lemon and sugar but the kids like raisins and banana.

Sweet - cherry pie filling is my fave. Failing that, anything goes....sugar and cinnamon, Nutella, Dairy Milk (it melts and is sooo good), bananas and Nutella, ice cream, marshmallow fluff.....te options are endless!

Savory - mince (Quorn), mushrooms in white wine/cheese sauce, spinach, fea and pine nuts, chicken (or Quorn) in white sauce with veg

I always used to just have orange juice and sugar but after our Paris trip we now have them with either chocolate spread and bananas or white chocolate and strawberries which is my fav!

Wont be having any this year (pre wedding diet no, no) but I am a huge fan of savoury pancakes-

    cheese and ham

    spinage, cream cheese and mushroom

    Smoked salmon and cream cheese

    Tomato, pesto, mozzarella and chorizo

    Tuna melt

    If I am going sweet

I'm happy with Lemon and Sugar

    Chocolate spread/nutella

Melted chocolate bars (mars bars work well)

Also while in Bali I discovered pancakes with very finely sliced banana cooked into the pancake then drizzled with honey and lime- AMAZING!

Crepe Suzette is the traditional French dessert made with oranges and flambéed with orange liquor.

Oooh, I'm dribbling at the thought, I love pancakes.

I'm making a roast at the moment with yorkshire puddings and the remaining batter will be saved for pancakes. How long can you keep batter in the fridge for? We might have to have them early.

Assuming you have made an egg batter you really should only use it the same day as raw shell eggs perish rather quickly once they have been cracked.

    Golden syrup on our pancakes.

I suggested orange juice to C last year, he looked at me like I had 2 heads.

I did these year before last Ali, I added bacon too. Bloody gorgeous! Loads of black pepper and you're on your way to awesome.

Think I'll do cheese, spinach and crispy parma ham this year. Then for sweet, stewed cherries with a bit of booze with a dark chocolate sauce and some good vanilla ice cream. Mmm or raspberries cold with the dark choc sauce. H will have nuttella no doubt, he thinks hot fruit is wrong, and that fruit spoils puddings. Weirdo.

I used to hate them when I was a kid but now I love them (damn tastebuds changing to allow me to like more stuff that's bad for me!)

savoury - I like cheese, peppers & chillis

sweet - just about anything! Esp sugar & lemon and chocolate & bananas.

OH once took a REALLY unflattering pic of me taking a HUGE bite from a choc&banana crepe from a street van! I'll see if I can find it! What's a little humiliation eh!

I've had pancakes today as not sure I'll have time on Tuesday.

I went with simple white and milk choc chips, lemon juice and a little sprinkle of sugar. Nommy.
