Iconic New York City Weddings

by Cathy@hitched

New York, New York – so good it’s one of the top destinations for UK couples marrying abroad (and a city I go back to again and again).

If your heart is set on a slice of the Big Apple, make it even more memorable with a ceremony in one of the city’s most iconic locations:

In the Park

The green heart of the city, Central Park has a string of wonderful wedding locations, including the Pond, Wagner Cove and the Ladies Pavilion, depending on your guest list.

There are restrictions on anything which might damage the park itself, from confetti to candles and even chairs, and no amplified music. But for a simple ceremony in one of New York’s loveliest spots, this is hard to beat.

To guide you through, a wedding planner specialising in Central Park weddings, such as Wed in Central Park (www.wedincentralpark.com) is a good idea.

On a Skyscraper

While the Empire State Building isn’t available for ceremonies, New York isn’t short of skyscrapers. And Top of the Rock (www.topoftherocknyc.com) has incredible views, with a 360 degree panorama of the skyline.

Choose from The Weather Room, on the 67th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, or 620 Loft & Garden, seven stories above Rockefeller Centre where you can stand among the greenery and see the spires of St Patrick’s Cathedral.

With a long waiting list, it’s tricky to arrange personally but specialist companies such as Ultimate USA Weddings (ultimateusaweddings.com/nyc-wedding-locations) can help.

With Lady Liberty

There’s no more iconic site than the Statue of Liberty, and you can tie the knot on Liberty Island itself – although the island will be open to other visitors during normal public hours. With various restrictions and a limited number of permits per day, book well in advance.

You could also consider Ellis Island (thestatueofliberty.com/events) with views over to Lady Liberty, where you can hold indoor and outdoor events from 25 guests up.

Day at the Museum

Naturalist? Astronomer? Or perhaps you’re huge film fans? One of the city’s most famous attractions, the American Museum of Natural History (www.amnh.org/hostanevent/index.php) has been immortalised in movies, TV, games and even cartoons and it makes an equally unforgettable wedding venue.

After all, what could be more memorable than saying “I do” under a blue whale, dining with a dinosaur or being surrounded by the stars and planets, as well as friends and family?
