Mother of the Bride Outfits: Long vs. Short

by Fran @ Hitched

The mother of the bride will probably choose her wedding outfit based on the style of your venue and the time of day you choose to tie the knot.

As it’s our fashion special on the homepage this month I wanted to focus today’s blog on mother of the bride outfits, long vs. short – to give all the mums out there a little guidance (if required) when it comes to choosing the perfect outfit for the exciting occasion.

When to wear a long mother of the bride outfit:

I believe that the later into the evening it goes, the longer your outfit can be. So for a mother of the bride whose daughter and son-in-law to-be have chosen to tie the knot in the evening at a swanky city venue, a long dress could be ideal. A black tie wedding theme also demands a long dress for the main mother as does a destination wedding on the beach with some sensational accessories. Depending on the time of year, and the weather, a long mother of the bride outfit may require a shrug, fancy jacket or pashmina to keep warm. Long mother of the bride outfits should go down to the floor, so trying them on with the right heel height is essential.

When to wear a short mother of the bride outfit:

If you’re not afraid to show off your legs then a short (and I mean on, or just below the knee) mother of the bride outfit could be perfect for you. Consider teaming your short dress or skirt/top combo with matching shoes, a bag and either a hat or fascinator to tie the whole outfit together. Short mother of the bride outfits can look super classy and for your mum, the investment could well be something that they’ll wear time and time again. Some mothers like to tie the colour of their wedding outfit in with a shade appearing in the wedding, and others just want to look like a leading lady.

I would also recommend wearing nude tights with a short mother of the bride dress as it will look much smarter and cover up any blemishes.
