We Take a Behind the Scenes Peek at Ruth Payne’s Wedding Accessories (And the Unique Buttonhole that Liam Payne Wore!)

by Charlotte@hitched

Unless you’ve been living under a rock this summer, you can’t have missed the gorgeous wedding of Ruth Payne and Thomas Gibbins back in June.

Although her famous brother, One Direction superstar Liam Payne, gained a lot of attention for his loved-up display of affection with plus-one Cheryl, Ruth’s look still stole the show and I adored her beautiful tiered wedding dress.

But it wasn’t just Ruth’s dress that caught my attention - her gorgeous bouquet was truly unique too.

The talented lady behind Ruth’s unique bouquet is Lesa from I Heart Buttons, who specialises in bespoke buttonholes and button and brooch bouquets. She also made the quirky buttonholes for all the groomsmen, including Liam who even wrote a song for Ruth and Thomas’s first dance

We got the chance to speak to Lesa to find out more about that beautifully unique bridal bouquet, plus we can reveal some exciting behind the scenes pictures from Ruth’s stunning wedding.

What first inspired you to create I Heart Buttons?

I Heart Buttons has just celebrated its 5th birthday - time has flown by! After seeing a photo on the internet of a plain button bouquet, I had all sorts of ideas of what could be included and decided to give it a go and create one which stood out. After making my first bouquet, I was hooked and it all went from there.

Tell us about the bouquet that you made for Ruth?

Ruth let me have free reign when creating her order. Her colours were royal blue and ivory and she was also including butterflies and daisies at her wedding. I had the most amazing sparkly butterfly brooch which I knew would be the perfect centrepiece for the bouquet - plus I also found some tiny sparkly butterflies which I scattered around it.

After adding lots more sparkle, I finished off her bouquet using royal blue satin for the collar and ribbon handle. I also added little paper flower and button daisies to the underside of her bouquet to tie in with the bridesmaid flowers.

What did you make for the groomsmen and the bridal party?

For Thomas’s buttonhole, I wanted to add similar elements from Ruth’s bouquet so I included a small button daisy and a sparkly butterfly. The rest of the buttonholes for the groomsmen were made in a similar style and included a paper flower and a button daisy in each to keep with the theme.

Ruth’s bridesmaids had paper flower and button bouquets which I made to look like little daisies. These were finished off with a royal blue satin collar and ribbon handle. I then created a buttonhole for the page boy and a button wand for the flower girl, which consisted of a silver glittery star and was finished off with buttons, paper flowers and strands of ribbon.

What has the reaction been like since the wedding?

Amazing! My friends and family have always supported me and were over the moon when I told them I was creating all of this for Ruth. My current brides find it really exciting that they’ve had their bouquets made by I Heart Buttons. Past brides are also so pleased for me and love the fact they already have a bouquet to treasure forever.

What are your plans for I Heart Buttons?

I am in the process of creating a sister website to I Heart Buttons, which will be called I Heart Buttonholes. I want to keep this particular website concentrated on the buttonholes and corsages that I make.

I don't know about you, but I'm in love with the amazing accessories that Lesa has created - they're a great way to give your day a unique twist of personality.

Will you be having an alternative button or brooch bouquet on your big day? Or perhaps your groomsmen are rocking alternative buttonholes like Liam Payne's awesome button and paper one?

If you’re a super organised bride and have already found your bouquet, then the next step is to read our guide to matching your nails to your wedding bouquet – it’s the hottest new trend!
