Weddings abroad in Africa

British couples wishing to marry in Cairo have to satisfy the Egyptian authorities that they are free to marry. They should, therefore, first come to the Consular Section of the Embassy in Cairo to make statutory declarations, before a consular officer, that they are free to marry.

1. Valid Identity Cards or Passports will be the only accepted forms of identification. If a person has any other form of identification, he/she MUST give the 21-day notice.

2. Death Certificate of spouse if widowed and Divorce Decree Absolute if divorced.

3. Documentary evidence of reason why notice cannot be given e.g. invitation letter from an Embassy inviting the applicant for an interview on a specific date.

4. Completed Application form.

5. If application is approved, a fee of Kshs.6, 250 is paid.

6. A marriage date is then booked.

7. A Special License is also required if the wedding is to take place in a place other than the Registrar's Office. It is applied for after. Notice has been given. A fee of Kshs.10, 250 is payable.

8. All couples must bring two witnesses on their marriage day.

A blessing in Morocco is permitted but not a full ceremony.  Be sure to do research via the British Embassy before proceeding with your blessing in Morocco.

Copies of Divorce Decrees (if applicable)
Copies of Death Certificates (if applicable)

Each party will need to complete a "Declaration for the Purpose of Marriage" (form B131) which will need to be completed in the presence of the marriage officer when they arrive in the country

An Abridged Marriage Certificate will be issued to you immediately after the ceremony has taken place. The Marriage Officer will register your marriage with the Department of Home Affairs and apply for your Unabridged Marriage Certificate which you can use to register your marriage back here in the UK. The Unabridged certificate will be stamped "Apostille" by the High Court in Cape Town. It will take approximately 3 working days to issue this certificate.

You will require various documentation in order to process your marriage in Zambia. Any person wishing to get married in Zambia must complete Affidavits and Notice of Marriage forms which are available from the Civic Centre in Lusaka. The completed forms must be submitted to the Local Government Administrator's Office at the Civic Centre where a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) will be issued for production to the person who is to solemnize the marriage. Both parties will be required to produce their original birth certificates. It normally takes 3 weeks to process a CNI and costs K 50,000.
