Maldives Honeymoon: When to Go, How Much it Costs & Where to Stay

With crystal waters, white beaches and overwater villas, a Maldives honeymoon is truly a slice of paradise. We took a trip to this romantic destination to bring you the ultimate guide on how to plan your newlywed island escape...

Over-water villa in the Maldives

If you and your partner are looking for post-wedding paradise, a Maldives honeymoon checks every box and more. A scattering of 1,200 coral islands and sandbanks, it is arguably one of the most beautiful honeymoon destinations in the world and as soon as we stepped off the plane (seaplane no less!) we could see why.

With pure white sand and almost-surreal crystal clear sea, beach-loving couples wanting a romantic island escape with an emphasis on luxury accommodation will be hard-pushed to find anywhere quite as tranquil as this tropical country. But that's not to say you can't experience a honeymoon in the Maldives on a budget - with advice from Monique Williams from luxury travel experts Kuoni, our guide gives you an excellent idea on how.

Each resort in the Maldives is its own private island, so although most of your time will likely be spent relaxing with your spouse, there is also lots to get stuck into. "Couples can enjoy candlelit dinners under the stars and enjoy the most amazing cuisine. There’s plenty to do with snorkelling or diving on vibrant reefs, unique spa experiences or just relaxing in a villa that really gives you a wow factor with an exclusive feel for your special time together," explains Monique.

From the best time of the year to travel, to what to do in the Maldives, plus insights into must-visit resorts including, Kuramathi, Kandolhu and Maafushivaru, here's everything you need to know before you book your Maldives honeymoon trip.

Your Ultimate Guide to a Maldives Honeymoon

How to Plan a Maldives Honeymoon?

When to Go to the Maldives

Being paradise and located near the equator, the Maldives is hot and sunny all-year round but the best weather is between November and April when rainfall is at its lowest and it has the longest hours of sunshine. Expect temperatures of around 30 degrees.

How to Get to the Maldives

Flights from the UK to the Maldives mostly land in the country's main international airport in the capital Malé . A direct flight to the Maldives takes between 10-11 hours, however typically couples would fly with a stop-over, usually in Dubai but this depends on the airline.

Once landed in Malé , a boat or seaplane will be your form of transport to the various islands - we flew with Trans Maldivian Airways which was an amazing experience to have before we'd even set foot on the resort! It will likely be one of the most scenic journeys of your life as you fly over the breath-taking islands below.

Entry Requirements

All travellers to the Maldives must fill in a Traveller Declaration Form within 96 hours of arrival/departure.

Is the Maldives a Good Honeymoon Destination?

When it comes to an intimate and private experience away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the one resort per island aspect of the Maldives really sets it apart from other honeymoon holiday destinations. Monique agrees, commenting, "the Maldives is that idyllic picture-perfect setting of sugar white sands and sparkling waters, a true island escape in stunning surroundings to get away from it all in pure luxury."

This creates a peaceful and romantic atmosphere which is perfect for couples looking to spend quality time together relaxing after their wedding. The Maldives is renowned for its iconic overwater accommodation, with many of these rooms boasting their own pools and direct access to the beach, as well as gold standard hospitality and service being a big priority for this Indian Island destination.

Quite simply, if you are after impeccable service in a dreamy location where unwinding will be top of your list, the Maldives is the honeymoon choice for you.

10 Things You Must Do On Your Maldives Honeymoon

1. Go Snorkelling or Diving

Green turtle

The Maldives is known for its natural surrounding and wildlife, with many of the resorts being built with preserving the eco-system in mind. You'll find incredible sea life right on your doorstep, so snorkelling or diving is a must. If you're new to this you needn't worry - due to the clear, warm waters and typically calm seas, even beginners can get involved.

If you're staying in an overwater villa, you can quite literally snorkel off your balcony where you can expect shoals of exotic fish, reef sharks and rays. Head out deeper from your hotel on a boat trip or diving excursion for manta rays, turtles and whale sharks. The Maldives is also one of the few places in the world where you can see hammerhead sharks!

Kuramathi, Kandolhu and Maafushivaru are resorts that all boast fully equipped PADI/SSI dive centres making them perfect for first time experiences, refresher courses or unguided house reef diving with a buddy.

2. Attend a Marine Biology Talk

Speaking of the marine life, there will often be a marine specialist who lives at the resort and will be happy to talk you through the conservation efforts and aquatic highlights of the area. Lynn Kessler from Maafushivaru gives presentations to guests twice a day and is connected with a coral planting program which is fascinating to learn about.

At Kuramathi, resident marine biologist Sara Scroglieri, runs their incredible Eco Centre and conducts informational lectures on conservation that you can listen in to.

3. Take Part in Water Sports

The beaches in the Maldives are unrivalled and if you're looking for something other to do than sunbathe, snorkel and swim, consider taking part in the wide range of water sports on offer. Expect windsurfing, kayaking, wakeboarding and even a banana ride at some resorts.

We tried our hand at paddle boarding and it's a great option to do with your partner. There's something seriously romantic about drifting along the ocean together, spotting fish beneath you. That's if you can stay balanced!

4. Indulge in Private Dining

Private beach candlelit dinner

"Food is a big part of any stay," says Monique and if you're a foodie couple, you won't be disappointed with the Maldives. As well as the impressive selection of restaurants and cuisines available to you, a private dining experience is a must for your honeymoon.

The Romance Dinner at Kuramathi involves a sumptuous lobster meal on a secluded corner of the beach, lit with candles. It's the ideal spot to reminisce on your special wedding day. Kandolohu also offers an unbelievable private dinner with their Moonlight Jetty package where you and your partner can gaze at the stars surrounding the island while you dine.

5. Relax on a Sunset Cruise

How does relaxing on a boat, tucking into delicious canapes and sipping on a glass of Champagne as you and your new husband or wife watch the sun melt into the Indian Ocean sound? Yep, it sounds pretty romantic to us too!

Hopping on an evening cruise is a great way to view the islands from a different angle, and experience the breathtaking sunsets the Maldives has to offer.

6. Learn How to Star-Gaze

If you struggle to spot any stars at home, you'll have no trouble finding them in the Maldives - especially if you have the help of the wonderful Astronomy Club at Maafushivaru. Using a state-of-the-art telescope, they'll guide you through the solar system and constellations.

7. Unwind at the Spa

Over the ocean spa

Book you and your partner into a couple's treatment if your resort has spa and you won't regret it. The facilities in the Maldives are seriously impressive and are often pretty affordable too. Many of the treatments use a host of natural and organic ingredients and will leave you feeling relaxed and invigorated.

The spa above is located at Kuramathi and is as unbelievable as it looks. You'll be taken to a private, over the water treatment space for a couple's massage, where the only sounds you'll hear are the lapping of waves.

8. Practise Some Yoga

Your workouts don't have to go amiss on your honeymoon in the Maldives if you don't want them to. Many resorts hold morning or sunset yoga sessions, so you can practice the downward dog while looking out over the horizon.

9. Stroll Along a Sand Bank

If the resort you are staying at has a sand bank, we recommend making some time to visit. You and your partner will have an entire stretch of sand to walk along hand in hand. Better yet, as the sand in the Maldives is made up of coral and not rock, it doesn't retain the sun's heat so you won't have to worry about going barefoot.

The best time to go is early morning when there will be less people, or at sunset to capture impressive views. The famous sand bank at Kuramathi is located on the sunset side of the island.

10. Watch a Beach Movie

Maldives beach movie night

Yes, you read that right - you really can watch a movie on the beach in the Maldives! Grab your partner (and some popcorn), head to the beach and snuggle down on a comfy beanbag for a moonlit cinema experience. With showings of classic movies including Breakfast at Tiffany's and Notting Hill common, there's bound to be a film that you and your partner love.

Where to Stay in the Maldives: The Must-Stay Resorts to Suit All Budgets

With over 100 resorts to stay in, it can feel a little overwhelming when choosing your dream Maldives honeymoon resort and Maldives honeymoon package. We've done the hard work for you and narrowed it down to the must-stay places that will suit all budgets, and you don't have to pick just one - a twin centre stay is a really popular choice for couples who can't decide.

"We have some customers who can’t make up their mind about whether they would prefer a small or a large island but they can have it all with a twin centre stay including two of our most popular islands – Kuramathi and  Kandolhu. For clients who would like to experience both a beach and an overwater villa we can really tailor-make the honeymoon, so every couple has their own unique slice of paradise," explains Monique.

Kuramathi

Kuramathi overwater villas

Four-star resort Kuramathi is one of the Maldives' most popular resorts as there is so much to do - it's also one of the more affordable options, yet doesn't scrimp on luxury. This large island is made up of lush foliage lined pathways that lead to two oceanfront infinity pools, plus a freshwater pool. Oh, and that's before you've even swam in the ocean which houses a reef accessible straight from the beach. Fancy your hand at diving? There are more than 20 sites that can be reached in up to 45 minutes!

There's no shortage of places to eat as this resort boasts three main buffet style restaurants as well as five a la carte restaurants, an island coffee shop, beach BBQ and seven bars. You'll likely find yourself tucking into some of the island's homegrown salad from their sustainable Hydroponic Garden. For a romantic drink before dinner, the Champagne Loft is a must-visit, with breath-taking views across the waterfront.

If variety is your thing, Kuramathi also offers a gym, library, tennis court and there are various water sports on offer. You can choose to stay in either a beach or water villa to suit your budget, which all feature a king-sized bed, air-conditioning and sundecks with loungers.

Sustainability is a top priority for Kuramathi which is home to an impressive eco-centre - it even features a sperm whale skeleton that you can check out. As well as continuous monitoring of the marine eco-system by their resident marine biologist, this resort uses energy and water saving methods such as the use of glass bottles and has proper waste management in place.

How Much Does a Honeymoon in the Maldives Cost?

You might be wondering if the Maldives is expensive for a honeymoon. Typically, prices start upwards of around £2,000 per person for a week's honeymoon in the Maldives but this will depend on the type of board you opt for and the accommodation you choose. Many couples want to stay in an overwater villa and there are ways to do so without blowing your budget.

"A honeymoon is such a special occasion once in a lifetime experience we really want to make sure we can make our clients dreams a reality whilst keeping in mind their budgets. For the Maldives, many people envisage the stunning overwater villas which can increase the price. A great option is to split your stay and by including a beach villa and an overwater villa, this gives you the best of both worlds and is more affordable without compromising on the experience," recommends Monqiue.

You can also save money depending on the time of year you go - while you aren't guaranteed all-day sun in the off-peak season, you're still likely to have an incredible time for a fraction of the price.
