The Hitched Guide to Flowers for Your Bridesmaids

Looking for the latest tips and trends in flowers? Get floral by checking out the Hitched guide to beautiful blooms for your bridesmaids

Lots of attention is lavished on a bride’s bouquet – but her bridesmaids’ flowers are just as important in creating a floral flourish on a wedding day.

We asked wedding florist Amanda Anastasi, an accredited Interflora Vera Wang florist at Chesterman Florist in Surrey, about the very latest trends in bridesmaid floristry. “Hand-tied posies are still a firm favourite for bridesmaids,” she says. “They allow for a diversity of styles and flower combinations, making sure to capture and complement the themes and colours of the big day. The current trend is towards the just-picked, loose hand-tied, but tighter, more modern shapes are also beginning to emerge.”

Amanda says that traditional whites and creams, featured in the Cream Rose and Freesia bridesmaid bouquets from the Interflora Vera Wang Wedding Collection, are proving popular this year – but paler tones are being complemented with pastel hues of pink, apricot and blue. “It’s a sign of a move towards brighter, more vibrant colours,” she says.

“Roses and freesias are popular flower choices,” Amanda adds. “Blue hydrangeas are also proving to be a big hit this year, as a solo bloom or paired with other flowers, like spray roses.”

Beautiful Bouquets

A bridesmaid bouquet may be a traditional choice, but there are endless colours, blooms, combinations and contrasts to choose from. The classic look is for the bridesmaids to carry a smaller version of the bride’s bouquet, featuring the same flowers, but you can really play around with bridal party floristry for a more eye-catching effect. For example, dressing your bridesmaids in different coloured dresses can be accentuated if they carry a white bouquet with a signature bloom to match their individual dress; simple white sprays look great against dark bridesmaid dresses while the bride can carry a colourful bouquet; if the bridesmaids carry white bouquets, and the bride carries a bouquet made up of a single bloom that matches the bridesmaid dresses, the impact is stunning; or consider furnishing the bridesmaids with exactly the same bouquet as the bride for a clean and modern look.

Cool Bridesmaid Corsages

Whether they’re on your wrist or dress – or even a mini version pinned in your hair – corsages don’t need to be carried, so they are a great choice if you want your bridesmaids to feel unhindered on the day. Corsages look best if they match and complement the colour scheme of the day. If you’re having lots of bridesmaids, they may also be a more affordable choice than bouquets, and you can ask your florist to make sure the bridesmaid corsages complement the buttonholes to be worn by the groomsmen and bridal party.

Beautiful Bridesmaid Baskets

Perfect for flower girls, baskets add a vintage touch to a wedding – and if you fill them with petals, your bridesmaid has a lovely job to do when she scatters them at your feet as you emerge from the church. Alternatively, you could fill a basket with confetti cones for after the ceremony, or fill it with buttonholes for the bridesmaids to hand out just before the service. If your bridesmaid is wearing a floral garland, filling the basket with matching petals or flowers, and using coordinating ribbon to dress the basket up, looks incredible.

Flowers in Her Hair

Putting flowers in your bridesmaids’ hair can be cute, glamorous, elegant or dazzling: there are limitless possibilities. White flowers look lovely on younger maids, and can add glamour to an older bridesmaid. Use floral bands or crowns with wavy hair and plaits for a boho look; use huge statement flowers in the hair to emphasise a vivid colour scheme; if the bouquet is minimal – a sheaf bouquet, for example – contrast with a traditional floral crown in a feminine colour; choose a different colour floral headdress for each bridesmaid to add interest to the styling; and for a fabulous minimal look, an all white bridal party looks amazing if the bridesmaids wear a large, single white flower in their hair.
