Mother of the Groom Styling Tips from Regine Ellis, Creative Director of John Charles:
- Consider the colour palette - “Work to complement the weddings colour palette, not match it. Look at the colour scheme of the bridal party. If the bridesmaids are in lilac, go for a rich, deep purple accent.
- Treat yourself before the day – “Have a pampering session and get your makeup done professionally for the big day. Bear in mind the running around you’ll be doing on the day and the tears so be prepared to apply touch ups.
- Invest in an outfit – “Choosing a quality outfit will not only give you a great silhouette, you’ll also have an outfit that will last a lifetime.
- Think of the venue – “Be aware of the type of wedding and venue your son is having, as this should be reflected in your outfit.
- The golden rule of styling – “Work with what you have and highlight your most beautiful features. A knee length, tailored fit is fantastic for elongating and showcasing legs for example.
Yes it is acceptable to wear white – however, it must be broken up into a print or with other colours so you don’t risk it being too dominant in your outfit (the bride won’t thank you for that!)
The monochrome 25999A dress from John Charles is an elegant choice with its flattering fit and stylish lace overlay. Keep the look fuss free and demure with a cropped jacket and don’t forget to finish the outfit off with a matching hat.
“Be striking with your hat choice,” says Regine. “It’s the eternal signature of glamour and a form of costume that gives you confidence. A comfortable, securely placed hat will always look lovely.”
If your son is getting married at a summery wedding venue, consider the season when deciding on the colour of your mother of the groom outfit. A head to toe co-ordinating pastel outfit is an easy breezy way to do summer wedding dressing.
Look for dresses with clever panelling if you want a structured look. Style 26016 is a stunning jacquard dress which will give you a tall, willowy silhouette. The floral pattern is broken up by the panels, giving the look a stylish edge. Pair this dress with a cropped jacket and hat in a matching shade of light blue.
We’re in love with the delicate peach pink shade of John Charles’ 26060 dress. The floral lace detailing is a gorgeous spring or summer look and the illusion neckline is pretty without being too revealing. If you want to break up the print or pattern of your dress then simply add a high waisted belt for shape. Don’t forget to add a matching jacket and accessories.
If the rest of the bridal party are wearing deep pink bridesmaid dresses then this dress would be the perfect choice.
The striking style 26028 dress is a wonderful choice with its flattering panelling and lace capped sleeves. The subtle pleating at the waist and the small V-neck cut out adds even more detail to the design. As before, wear with a matching pastel blue jacket and hat. For your other accessories, you could choose a neutral coloured bag and shoes if you don’t want to wear head to toe blue.
Mother of the groom outfits in taffeta or satin are a fabulous choice as these materials work well as a fitted, knee length dress. The illusion neckline of the John Charles 26013 dress is made from an exquisite lace applique and the co-ordinating cropped jacket will make you feel so glamorous and well dressed.
Fit and Flare
If you want something a bit different from the classic knee length design then look for dresses with unique details, like style 26047A from John Charles. This feminine lace dress is given a youthful touch thanks to its subtly flared skirt. If you can’t bear to cover up the illusion neckline, there’s a matching lace jacket which is made from the same sheer material.
“Consider your outfit as a whole and make sure that it is balanced,” suggests Regine. “A striking print is always a chic statement to make. Pair it with a co-ordinating plain fabric jacket for maximum style points, which will show off the print of your dress without overpowering it.”
We love the bold blue print on the 26001A dress which is complemented with a glamorous touch of shimmer. As this is such a bold look, choose understated accessories in neutral colours and pair the dress with a plain navy jacket.
If your son is planning to have a vintage themed wedding, then perhaps you could reflect this in your outfit with some subtle details. The 26054 dress has the signature John Charles fitted silhouette but with the addition of beautiful art deco style embellishment at the neckline.
If you’re looking for chic, high quality outfits for your son’s big day, then look no further than the specialised mother of the groom department at Jacques Vert. Their selection of outfits and co-ordinating accessories will appeal to all and the sophisticated cuts and fabrics will ensure that you look and feel your best.
When we spoke to Lauren Teff from the team at Jacques Vert, she gave us her top tips for choosing mother of the groom outfits: “Coordinate a simple dress with a show-stopping jacket - a vibrant cover-up will really make your look stand out. Alternatively, if you want to make a statement with your dress then go for an eye-catching style with intricate detailing, but keep your jacket and accessories pared down.”
Navy and Pink
The beautiful peony design on this Jacques Vert dress breaks up the white background enough to stop it looking too ‘bridal’. This ladylike dress would go wonderfully with the navy stand collar bolero, which has a detachable corsage to complement the florals on the dress. Co-ordinate your finishing touches with the jacket by going for a navy clutch, pair of shoes and hat, or, highlight the print in the dress with pink accessories.
These matching accessories would certainly complement the pink tones in the previous dress. The kitten heel of the shoes means that you’ll be able to last in them all day and the bows add a pretty and feminine touch.
Give a nod to a blue colour scheme with this gorgeous turquoise shift dress. The shimmering fabric is given more glamour thanks to the embellishment at the scoop neckline. Go for a jacket and a hat in either the same blue or a neutral shade to avoid any colour clashing.
Are the bridal party wearing navy bridesmaid dresses? If so, this dress would be a great choice as it sticks to the blue colour scheme without being too similar to the maids.
Complement the previous turquoise dress with these silvery sling back heels, then pull the whole look together with the floral disc hat. Whilst the colour of these accessories is fairly pared down, they still make a very elegant statement for your mother of the groom look.
Lauren’s Accessory Tips:
- Step out in style - “Don’t forget that your shoes are an ideal place to add another pop of colour to your look. Just be wary of colour clashing if your outfit is bright.
- Go small yet stylish with your bag - “Carry all your occasion essentials in a chic bag that’s still practical. We recommend opting for a small clutch bag so you can easily dance throughout the evening without being weighed down.
- It’s all about the hat - “Turn heads with a feminine headpiece. Find one that you know you’ll be comfortable wearing all day and make sure that it suits your face shape."

This high street gem is perfect for high quality occasionwear with a price tag you won’t be scared of. There’s something here to suit every age, from fashion forward dresses to classic designs.
The Harven dress from Coast is a dreamy look for the wedding. The pleated skirt is different yet still wedding appropriate thanks to the hem that falls below the knee. Pair with a jacket that is similar to the shimmery jacquard bodice and go for a simple pair of silver or neutral toned shoes.
Pretty in Pink
If the colour scheme has berry tones in it, then the bold pink pieces from Coast would be a suitable pick. The Darcia-May bow dress will conceal any lumps and bumps to give you a streamlined silhouette – we also love the playful addition of a pretty bow at the neckline. If you’ve gone for a dark floral print, then the vergara bow jacket would make an excellent cover up.
You don’t have to be restricted to searching purely for dresses when finding an outfit, why not consider pairing a formal skirt with a complementary top? Coast’s Miriam printed skirt is a glamorous look that falls below the knee – it would look ever so chic at a spring wedding. Balance a printed skirt with a plain top like the metallic queenie top shown here and wear a light coloured hat.
A head to toe white or ivory outfit is a big no-go for the mother of the groom or bride, but the Marge Duchess satin dress from Coast just about gets away with it thanks to the beige hue. The lace bodice and skirt split add an on trend look without flashing too much skin, and the matching satin jacket is the perfect plain cover up.
Complete the Look
Coast do a stunning range of fascinators and hair pieces which are ideal if you don’t want to wear a full on hat. These pretty hairbands and hairclips easily slot into your hairstyle and are available in shades to complement any outfit.
