Philip and Emma first met on a school trip aged 12 – she went to the local girls’ school and he went to a nearby boys’ school. They all met up at Cambridge market to welcome some German exchange students to the area.
Emma thought Philip was dreamy, but didn’t dare speak to him. A few months later the schools teamed up again and they were on the Eurostar to Germany when her best friend Sarah secretly asked him out on Emma’s behalf, but he said no. She was horrified and will all her 13 year old confidence, strutted up to him and said, “Anyone that doesn’t want to go out with me, must be BLIND.”
During the trip they got to know each other better and he asked her out a further three times, but she said no just to spite him. A year later Emma was hiding in a different part of the school trying to dodge detention, and she spotted a picture of Philip on a display about the most recent exchange trip. He was even better than she remembered, so she got his number off a friend and they went on their first date the next day!
A decade later, and the couple headed back to Cologne where they first fell for each other to mark their anniversary. Philip persuaded Emma to go for a walk to the Cathedral, where he got down on one knee. She couldn’t stop crying, even when a couple came over to take their picture.
