  • O/T My poor hamster :-(

    [:'(]  WeepBawl

Sorry to get all sad, and OT.

After playing with my hamster last night I must not have secured the cage properly and she got out.  We searched for her for hours but unfortunately our cat found the hamster first Sad  When I managed to separate them, hammie was lying on the floor twitching and chirping. I put her in her cage hoping that maybe she was in shock and left her overnight.

This morning she was still not moving properly, but she took some food and water from me (had to hand feed her). She cannot crawl properly and her front right paw hardly moves.  Her back right paw seems a bit weak too. I called a vet who said that she might have had a stroke due to the fright (luckily, the cat didnt really scratch her or break the skin) and if she is eating/drinking to leave her a short while and see whether she gets any better.

Would ask for some good vibes but Im not so sure they will work.  Ive never known a hammie with a stroke before - just wonder whether they really can recover.

    Thanks ladies.

I think Sooty knew he'd done wrong - he came up to our bedroom to sleep on our bed straight after, which he never does.  Trying to get back in our good books!  I know he was just being a kitty.  My fault for being stupid and not fixing the cage right :-(

Hope your little hammie recovers, might be kinder to have her pts if she's no better in the morning though?

I hate having to make that decision, always delegate it to OH. Whilst I know it's in their best interests, it's hard not to think of the effect it will have on myself.

    Any piccies?

Just had her out for some food and water but her mobility seems even worse so I think we will be vet bound tomorrow. Dont want to think that she is suffering.  I havent had her very long so only have a few mobile photos but this is Gabby....

First one makes her look a bit ratlike!

  • Re: O/T My poor hamster :-(

Oh sid this makes me want to cry- I have 3 hamsters and I adore this little creature, they are so cute.

Just spend lots of time with her so she knows you are there but a think a trip to the vets is a must. As someone else said you might have to make a difficult decision for the best.

Oh the poor wee thing Sad

My hamster Bambang had a stroke lat year, I took her to the vet and they said she will either pick up or go down hill. She seemed to pick up and I thought she would be ok, unfortunately a couple of days later she had another stroke and died pretty much instantly. Strokes in hamsters are quite common. They are just so small and fragile, try and rearrange her cage so she doesn't have to do any climbing up shelves or through tubes to get to her water. She may just be very sore and need some rest.

    Poor little Gabby xxxx

    Poor thing...

Have you got half a grape you can offer her? Serves as food and a drink without too much effort on her behalf. Baby rice is another option if you randomly have any of that. I keep a spare jar of baby food here for mine if they're ill at all - a small spoonful is easy for them to eat. Just make sure there's no garlic, onion or similar in it.

It does sound like the vets will be the best option for her though. You have my sympathies, and will be thinking of you. I can hardly bear to part with mine. We are down to 4 now, but I think of the 4 we have lost everyday when I feed the others.
