When did you (or will you) wean?  And how do you know your baby is ready?  George is almost 20 weeks and is increasingly interested in food.  I don't know whether to start him on some baby rice or to hang on for another 6 weeks.  I just wondered how many people wait until 6 months and how many people start introducing food sooner.

Would it be ok to offer him finger foods to suck on now (I mean stuff like carrot, melon... stuff that won't actually break off for him to swallow)?  I held a raw (peeled and whole) carrot the other day while he had a chew and he loved it (although not sure how much of that was because it was cold and hard for his gums).  I think he would enjoy having the odd bit of food just to hold and suck on and can't see any reason why he shouldn't?  I feel that it would start introducing him to different flavours without actually eating anything.

Please tell me about weaning - what you did, when you started, what they had at first etc....

    Thanks!

This website just about sums it up and hopefully will answer all your questions.

Just to add we started weaning at about 24 weeks.  This time I will aim to try and get to 26 as it was only because I was impatient and wanted to start her.  We did a combination of purees and BLW.  This time I will probably be more BLW and some purees.

We plan to wait until 26 weeks. I don;t see a problem with giving G food as you suggest but I don't have any exprience.

We've just started offering a bit of baby rice with EBM at 24 weeks (this week).  Mainly because she seemed so interested in what we were all doing at meal times and looked desperate to join in.  Will take it very gradually though and once the baby rice has gone, will start off on a mix of BLW and purees.  But just take it all very, very slowly.

we started with baby rice and veg puree at 19 weeks because R seemed so hungry all the time. However, I was very careful not to push him and if he didn't want something I stopped feeding. Within 2 weeks he was a food fiend and eating all that we would give him. He's still the same now! We kept to fruit and veg purees until 6 months, then introduced finger foods and meat, dairy etc.

sarah has had baby rice a few times in the last week but only becuase i'm trying to get er to take formula and thought i could gradually make it thinner unti she was having just formula! also wanyed to know she would take somethung when my mum has her in a few weeks time! she  really likes it but I'm avoiding weaning until she is a bit more stable sitting up! planning on doing purees and finger food but she can't accurately get things to her mouth yet so will prob start purees in a few weeks and give her the finger food without expecting her to take it yet.

    Hi Dinx

We're planning to go down thhe BLW route if possible so therefore expecting to wait til at least 26 weeks (currently 17 weeks) and will then assess based on how well he can sit up, hand to mouth co-ordination (which is already pretty good) and how we are managing with BFing at that point.

I am being flexible about it all and  just planning to take Noah's lead on it all as we get closer to the time.

He is starting to really pay attention to us eating now - though I think that is just him watching everything we do - so we are going to get him a highchair in a few weeks time and start eating at the table more and let him join us.

  • Re: Weaning questions

We've started this week (22 weeks). Her sleeping has been terrible for weeks and just recently daytime feeds have become a real battle as she's just not interested. We went to a weaning talk this Monday and afterwards I spoke to the nurse running it about our situation and without hesitation she said "start her now." We're not doing BLW though as I don't need food to be fun, I need it to fill her up.

We waited until 6 months, I really don't think she was ready before that.  Have you done the banana test ?

He may well be showing interest in your food, but he is also showing interest in everything else you are doing so it doesn't actually mean he needs it.

Apologies for lack of capital letters - Zoe has stolen my shift key Huh?

My sister weaned both her children at 17 weeks. Her son especially was very interested in food, and has taken to solids really well.

A is 17 weeks, but I'm sure he's not ready yet. I'm not desperate to wait til six months, nor am I averse to feeding him before hand if I think he's ready. He's just started watching us eating...like a little puppy dog!

Thanks everyone for your replies, have had one of those days so only now had the chance to sit down and reply.

G has very good hand / eye co-ordination - I did the banana test and he picked it up and put it straight into his mouth (then made a "yuck" type face Laugh).  He sits up pretty well with support and has very good head control...he's pretty strong - is already rolling both front to back and vice versa.

A couple of my friends with younger babies (just by a week or so) have recently been advised to wean by the health visitor which was why I was wondering if G would benefit. I don't want to do it if it won't benefit him, I'm in no rush, but if he's ready for it then would be up for giving it a go.

I'm quite interested in BLW, have been reading up on that a bit and have watched a couple of videos on youtube, but think we may do a combination of rice/mush and finger foods.

I think perhaps in the next couple of weeks I'll slowly introduce big/hard foods that he can play with and put in his mouth / taste and experiment with, but not actually eat.  I'll try to get a bit nearer to 26 weeks before we actually start weaning.

Re: finger foods - he's had melon (loved it), carrot (quite liked) and banana (really didn't seem to like).  Any thoughts on other stuff I could give him?

B is 18 wks and I gave him a rice cake yesterday to play with - he seemed to enjoy chewing it - but planning to hold off until much nearer 6 months before starting BLW.

Would anyone be intertested in a daily BLW thread? Once I get going I'd really like to compare notes.

I like the idea of a daily weaning / BLW thread - this is one of those things that seems to differe in every household and I think it'd be great to compare notes, share food ideas etc.

The reason it's advised to wait till the middle of the first year is because their immune system isn't developed and it can cause problems with allergies.

As someone with a baby with eczema and allergies, the nearer you can get to 26 weeks the better imo.  Even now at 30 weeks he's not overly fussed about food and it makes life much trickier!

If you're giving them food then you're weaning them imho, they might still be eating something even if you don't realise.
