  • 'How To' book for the newborn days?

Is there a book that will help with the early newborn days?

I'm not talkling about how to stop them crying or anything Gina Fprd like, but more how to change a nappy, how to swaddle, how to bath etc.

I think H would really appreciate a kind of 'how to' book for the nappies/bathing/holding/swaddling side of things.

    Any ideas?

    TIA x

The rough guide to babies book has things like this in it and was quiet a funny read.

we got an nhs book from the hv when she came in the first week - has all that sort of stuff in it

Not so much as a 'How to' book, but it has been by my side for the past 10 weeks, and has been a godsend... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Your-Baby-Week-Ultimate-Caring/dp/0091910552/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1268837829&sr=8-1 It just tells you what to expect, which as a first time neurotic mum with no idea was brilliant!

The nappies, and swaddling etc you will get shown what to do in hopital. As for bathing, I can highly recommend this seat: http://www.boots.com/en/BabyWay-Newborn-Bath-Seat_1021784/ It's made bathing so much easier for us.

Thank you all, I will look at all of those books Smile

I just think it'll be handy to have something like this lying around for the early days.

    Thanks

You can get a Haynes baby manual.

We had a great book called "Your Baby Week by Week" by Simone Cave, but that is about delevopment and behaviour more than anything!

I'm sure i was given at book by my midwife at around 20 weeks or maybe later about babies - five years, which covered nappies, first aid, development etc

I've barely looked at my book. I also got leaflets showing how to change a nappy from the hospital.

You dont need a book, you've got hitched  Wink

We didn't have a book, swaddle instructions came with our special swaddle blanket, in hospital I asked them to show me how to change a nappy and they also showed us how to bath her and dress her. I read the Baby Whisperer before Izzy was born and in the newborn days cursed it constantly. Hitched is much better for practical advice!
  • Re: 'How To' book for the newborn days?

I was going to say that i haven't atually used the nhs book apart from the first week and don't have any other books - we have just muddled through and hitched has given me all the advice i have needed so far.

  • Re: 'How To' book for the newborn days?

you'll be shown how to bathe/nappy etc at the hospital and the MWs will be visitng you too and will be able to show you how to do these things too. As for swaddling, if you buy a swaddling blanket they come with instructions and again the MWs/ HV will be able to show you.

Unless baby reads the same manual, I would say they are a waste of time/money.

And if there is anything you need to ask, you just log on here quickly!

Also Goldfish mentioned the book the HV gives you - that's quite useful. I didn't bath Isla until she was 10 days old so I had the book by that time. Also, it's not difficult to put a nappy on - the MW inthe hospital should help you

Hitched really is all I have needed since having Isla!

  • Re: 'How To' book for the newborn days?

Thanks all, it's not a manual I'm after and I know I have you lot on here!

I must have changed 100 nappies in my time depsite not having had children yet and am sure we can pick things up. I just think H would like to have a read of something before baby comes so he feels like he's prepared a bit.

Will have a mooch in Waterstones and look at some of the books suggested on here.

    Thanks! x
