  • Sizes of baby clothes

We're not planning on getting many babygros at all before baby comes, but obviously need a capsule wardrobe for hospital and the frist couple of days.

So what size did you buy? Mainly I've got a few Newborn bits but they go up to 10lbs.

Did you get any smaller baby size that go up to 7.5lbs too?

I don't want to get too many bits but perhaps I should get a couple of options in the smaller size?

    TIA x

I bought two of the starter sets from Mothercare, one was newborn and one up to 1 month.  I'd been told all along that Zoe was average and seen as in my family 6lb is a big baby I wasn't expecting a huge one.

Zoe was indeed average at 7lb 7oz and still wore the newborn stuff up to around 8/9 weeks old.  A couple of friends who had bigger babies still found the newborn stuff fitted because they were so curled up.

I also had this bizarre hatred of seeing newborn babies in clothes that are obviously too big for them, I wanted everythng to fit her.

Apologies for lack of capital letters - Zoe has stolen my shift key Huh?

I agree with this, which is why I am thinking I should maybe get a few bits in 'small newborn' size as well?! I have a capsule set of newborn bits from Mothercare and M&P and a few 0-3 months but I do think maybe I should get a few in the small newborn size.

I want baby's clothes to fit, not be huge!

    Thanks JB Thanks

I had newborn and 0-3 stuff before he was born, for some reason I hadn't thought he might be small-I'm only 5ft and a size 10/12 so not sure why it didn't occur to me Laugh he was 5lb15.5oz when he was born and newborn stuff looked huge!

I was very lucky that a lot of people sent smaller baby clothes when he'd been born so I used those until he fitted well in the newborn stuff.

Different places have different sizes too, I think m&s must be small fitting because his first babygrow was in newborn size and wasn't massively big

  • Re: Sizes of baby clothes

I took in a few Next newborn bbits and a couple of 0-3 months incase he was big. He was 7lb 3oz so the newborn stuff was pefect, if ever so slightly on the large side!

  • Re: Sizes of baby clothes

I have a lot in 5lb and 7.5lb, but that's because that's what S wore at first. Most babies don't need to go below the 10lb mark, but as was mentioned, sizing varies hugely between shops, so if you want some variability you could buy smaller newborn and larger newborn (e.g. Tesco for smaller, Next for larger?)

    Thanks Hannah Smile

I'll have a look at M&S and the sizes in there - I think from memory they do packs of things at a good price so I'll have a look online Smile

My J was 8lbs 15oz (so avove average!) when she was born & STILL all the newborn stuff hung off her & looked huge. She wore it for ages!

This time round, I'm getting a couple of smaller bits for the very early days.

I've tried to buy just one or two things in each size from each place as you find that they vary so much, and that way I figure at least some of them will fit him at some point! John Lewis has some lovely newborn things, and we have quite a few bits from Next. Asda are surprisingly good quality for the price. We have also bought from Boots, M&P and Mothercare.

  • Re: Sizes of baby clothes

I'll have to find a local ASDA and have a look. We've exhausted Mothercare, M&P and Boots!

Also will have a look at Tesco and Sainsbury next time we're there.

I'll get a selection as you've suggested. Thanks!

  • Re: Sizes of baby clothes

My advise would be to get a few small baby and newborn items but only a few until you know the weight. I had such a time of it as newborn in 1 shop is tiny compared to newborn in another. Ethan was 8lb 10oz when he was born so although some of the newborn stuff was still huge on him, most of it went unworn and there is about £500 worth of items in a box to be sold, infact less as I gave a whole load away.

Although ethan was a big baby, he wasn't chunky he was like a spring chicken but he was very long so I found petite newborn fit him in width but the length was too short so we had to go to newborn where items were like sacks but fit in length. We had quite a limited wardrobe and still do have problems with the length of clothes on him. No matter what age you'll find sich a vast difference in size from one place to another.

It will save you money in the long run. I'd get those packs of 4 or 5 bibs, 1 in each size, a few babygrows in each size and outerwear i.e. a pramsuit in newborn and that's about it at the moment.

We were a bit naieve, we bought 0-3months mainly but she wasn't a huge baby 6lb12oz so we ended up buying mainly newborn and she stayed in that till 3 months.

I do find though that NEXT and Mini Mode are rather large in sizing.

  • Re: Sizes of baby clothes

I wasn't expecting a small baby (H is 6'4", I am 5'9") so bought one set of babygrows and vests for first size (up to 9lbs) and then a couple of up to 1 month and then 0-3 months stuff. She was 8lb8oz and very long

However, she still sleeps in a M&S babygrow for 0-3 months and she's now well over 4 months old

I found that Mothercare sizes are quite small

Mamas and Papas are expensive. You're better off buying babygrows from supermarkets (they are very good quality) and save your much needed pennies.
